CoinGlass data cited in September 18, 2026 coverage showed $547 million in leveraged crypto positions liquidated over 24 hours as Bitcoin crossed $81,000. Most were short positions. That report did not link the event to an oil rally, so the headline’s causal claim is not established.
What the $547 million figure refers to
The Daily Hodl reported the figure on September 18, 2026, attributing it to CoinGlass. The report said Bitcoin had crossed $81,000 and that short liquidations accounted for most of the total. The amount is a reported estimate, not an independently verified market-wide tally. The Daily Hodl’s September 18 report does not say oil caused the liquidations.

| Measure | Reported amount |
|---|---|
| Total liquidations over 24 hours | $547 million |
| Short liquidations | $469.19 million |
| Long liquidations | $57.10 million |
| Bitcoin liquidations | $243.54 million |
| Ethereum liquidations | $95.66 million |
| Solana liquidations | $36.29 million |
The asset figures are the largest totals named in the report, not a complete breakdown of every token or venue. The long and short amounts also do not add exactly to the headline total, reflecting the reported figures’ precision and coverage.

The available reporting does not establish that it did. The September 18 account connects the $547 million total with Bitcoin moving above $81,000 and a large wave of short liquidations; it does not identify an oil rally as the trigger. Without evidence linking oil prices to that specific event, treating the two as cause and effect would overstate what is known.

Oil-linked contracts have appeared in a separate crypto-venue liquidation episode. CoinDesk reported on April 2, 2026, that tokenized Brent oil futures on Hyperliquid were involved in liquidations after geopolitical news pushed crude prices higher. That shows oil instruments can be part of crypto-platform liquidation reports; it does not explain the September $547 million figure. CoinDesk’s account of the Brent-futures episode concerns a distinct event.
A separate October event had a different liquidation pattern
On October 6, 2026, The Block reported $555.6 million in crypto liquidations over 24 hours as Bitcoin briefly fell to around $83,800. Long liquidations made up $487.2 million of that total. The Block described the decline as driven primarily by profit-taking and forced long closures after open interest and funding rates had built up—not as the September short squeeze. The Block’s October 6 report also cautioned that publicly available liquidation data may significantly understate the true extent of liquidations.

| Reported event | Price context | 24-hour total | Position split reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 18, 2026; CoinGlass figures reported by The Daily Hodl | Bitcoin crossed $81,000 | $547 million | $469.19 million shorts; $57.10 million longs |
| October 6, 2026; CoinGlass figures reported by The Block | Bitcoin briefly dipped to around $83,800 | $555.6 million | $487.2 million longs; short total not stated in The Block report |
These totals describe different 24-hour windows and opposite position imbalances. They should not be read as one continuous oil-driven episode. CoinGlass’s first-half 2026 report offers broader context: June had the period’s highest monthly liquidation total, US$16.14 billion, with longs accounting for 69.5%. That monthly figure is not directly comparable to either single-day report.
What liquidation totals tell traders—and what they do not
A leveraged position can be forcibly closed when losses leave a trader without sufficient margin to maintain it. If many positions are vulnerable at once, forced closures can add buying or selling pressure and amplify a move. Short liquidations typically occur as prices rise; long liquidations typically occur as prices fall.

- Check the reporting window. A 24-hour total is a rolling-period estimate, not necessarily a calendar-day count.
- Check the side. The long-short split helps distinguish a squeeze during a rise from forced selling during a decline.
- Check the market and source coverage. A tracker’s reported total may not cover every venue or capture every liquidation; The Block explicitly warned that publicly available data can understate the market-wide amount.
- Do not infer a cause from timing alone. A price move and a liquidation spike can coincide without the reporting proving what triggered the move.
