Bitcoin or another token remains property for federal tax purposes, yet moving property through an IRA follows retirement-account rules rather than ordinary brokerage rules. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer is generally tax free; a 60-day rollover has a deadline, same-property and one-rollover-per-year requirements; and a distribution can create ordinary income and, in some cases, a 10% additional tax.
This guide covers U.S. federal rules reflected in IRS Publications 590-A and 590-B, Topic No. 413, Notice 2014-21 language reproduced in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2023-19, and the IRS digital-asset guidance dated March 26, 2024. State taxes, foreign rules, prohibited transactions, valuation disputes and special arrangements such as lending or staking require separate advice.

What the IRS means by cryptocurrency in an IRA
IRS Notice 2014-21 states that convertible virtual currency is treated as property for federal tax purposes. That classification means property-transaction principles apply to the token itself. Once an asset is inside an IRA, however, the retirement account’s contribution, transfer, rollover and distribution rules control when the owner recognizes income.
An IRA is not a wallet that automatically accepts every token. The trustee or custodian must be legally able and contractually willing to hold the asset, and its documentation controls onboarding, custody, valuation and transaction instructions. IRS publications do not provide a universal list of cryptocurrency custodians, supported tokens or procedures. Confirm those points in the account agreement before sending any asset.

Crypto IRA contributions and deductibility
How a contribution is handled
A contribution is an amount placed into an IRA for the year, normally through the IRA trustee or custodian. If the account permits digital assets, the custodian may use an accepted contribution to acquire cryptocurrency or may accept an asset through a documented process. Do not assume that transferring coins from a personal wallet is an acceptable contribution; ask the custodian how it records the transaction and what assets it can receive.
When a contribution is deductible
Publication 590-A explains that an IRA contribution may be fully deductible, partially deductible or not deductible depending on the IRA type and the taxpayer’s circumstances. The deduction question is separate from the investment choice: holding crypto does not make a contribution deductible by itself. Amounts in an IRA generally receive tax advantages until they are distributed, subject to the rules for that type of IRA.
Keep the contribution date, amount, asset identification and custodian confirmation. Those records establish whether the transaction was a contribution, a transfer or a rollover and help resolve later basis and reporting questions.

Direct trustee transfer versus a 60-day rollover
The words transfer and rollover describe different legal paths. Publication 590-A says, “A transfer of funds in your traditional IRA from one trustee directly to another, either at your request or at the trustee’s request, isn’t a rollover.” Because the money or property is not distributed to you, a properly executed trustee-to-trustee transfer is generally tax free, is not subject to the one-rollover-per-year limit and normally avoids mandatory withholding.
A rollover is different: you receive a distribution of cash or other assets and contribute all or part of it to another eligible retirement plan within 60 days. Topic No. 413 describes it as, “A rollover occurs when you withdraw cash or other assets from one eligible retirement plan and contribute all or part of it, within 60 days, to another eligible retirement plan.”
| Issue | Direct trustee transfer | 60-day rollover |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives the distribution? | The receiving trustee receives the funds or property directly; you do not take possession as a distribution. | You receive the cash or assets and then contribute them to the receiving plan. |
| Deadline | No 60-day redeposit deadline applies to a direct transfer, although the custodians must complete their process. | The rollover generally must be completed within 60 days of receiving the distribution. |
| Property requirement | The custodians document the assets moved under their transfer instructions. | Publication 590-A says, “The same property must be rolled over.” Property distributed from the first IRA must be the property contributed to the second; substituting different cryptocurrency is not the same-property rollover described by the IRS. |
| One-per-year rule | Not subject to the IRA-to-IRA one-rollover-per-year limit. | Generally limited to one rollover from an IRA to another IRA, including the same IRA, in any one-year period, regardless of how many IRAs you own. |
| Withholding | A direct trustee transfer generally avoids withholding because no eligible rollover distribution is paid to you. | A taxable eligible rollover distribution paid to you generally has 20% mandatory federal withholding. You must replace withheld amounts from other funds if you intend to roll over the full distribution. |
| Reporting | Custodians report the transfer even though it is not currently taxable. | The distribution and rollover are reported under the applicable IRS instructions, even when the rollover is not currently taxable. |
| Roth conversion status | A transfer is not automatically a Roth conversion; the destination account and transaction instructions determine that treatment. | A conversion from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is a separate category and is not subject to the one-rollover-per-year rule, but taxable conversion amounts and five-year recapture rules can apply. |
How to complete a direct crypto IRA transfer
- Confirm both accounts. Ask the sending and receiving custodians whether they support the specific cryptocurrency, whether they can transfer it in kind or must liquidate it, and which account registrations match.
- Request trustee-to-trustee instructions. Use the custodians’ transfer forms and identify the transaction as a direct transfer, not a distribution payable to you. Give the receiving custodian’s legal name and account number exactly as requested.
- Match the asset and records. For an in-kind movement, record the token, quantity, network and transaction identifiers. Keep statements showing that the receiving trustee obtained the property directly.
- Verify completion. Check both account statements and obtain written confirmation of the transfer date and amount. Do not treat a check or wallet delivery to you as a direct transfer merely because you plan to forward it later.
- Retain tax documents. Keep the transfer confirmations with annual IRA statements. The custodians still report the transaction even though a properly completed direct transfer is not currently taxable.
How a 60-day crypto rollover works
Required sequence
- Receive the distribution. The first IRA distributes cash or property to you. The 60-day clock generally starts when you receive it.
- Preserve the same property. If cryptocurrency is distributed, the rollover contribution must be that same cryptocurrency. Selling it and contributing a different token, or contributing cash after receiving a token, does not satisfy the same-property rule described in Publication 590-A.
- Deposit by day 60. Contribute the eligible amount to the receiving IRA within 60 days. A missed deadline can make the distribution taxable unless an applicable waiver or self-certification procedure applies; do not assume relief is available.
- Account for withholding. When an eligible rollover distribution is paid to you, 20% federal withholding generally applies to the taxable amount. To roll over the entire distribution, you must replace the withheld amount with other funds; otherwise the withheld portion may remain taxable.
- Report the transaction. Follow the custodian and IRS instructions for reporting the distribution and rollover. A rollover can be reportable even when no current tax is due.
One-rollover-per-year limit
Only one IRA-to-IRA rollover is generally allowed in any one-year period, counting rollovers between your own IRAs and including a rollover back to the same IRA. The limit applies regardless of how many IRAs you own. It does not apply to direct trustee transfers or Roth conversions. Because the rule is measured by the distribution and rollover timing, map all IRA movements for the period before requesting a check.

Withdrawals from traditional and Roth crypto IRAs
Traditional IRA distributions
A traditional IRA distribution is generally included in gross income to the extent it is taxable. A distribution before the applicable age or an exception can also incur a 10% additional tax. Publication 590-B explains exceptions, ordering rules, required minimum distributions and beneficiary rules. The fact that the distributed asset is cryptocurrency does not remove those retirement-account rules.
For an in-kind distribution, the custodian transfers the token to you rather than cash. It is still a distribution, not a tax-free rollover. The taxable amount depends on the IRA type, your basis and the applicable distribution rules. IRS publications do not establish one universal valuation method for every token or custodian, so obtain the custodian’s valuation and reporting policy before authorizing the transfer.
Roth IRA distributions and conversions
Roth IRA qualified-distribution treatment depends on satisfying the five-year holding rule and other statutory conditions. A separate five-year period can apply to each Roth conversion or rollover contribution. If you take amounts attributable to a conversion during that period, the 10% additional tax can apply to the recapture amount even though the conversion itself occurred earlier.

Roth ordering rules determine which contributions, conversions and earnings are treated as distributed first. Required minimum distribution rules and beneficiary treatment also differ from traditional IRAs. Ask the custodian to identify the source of an in-kind distribution and keep conversion dates and amounts with your tax records.

A sale or exchange carried out by the IRA is an account transaction, not a personal distribution to you. The immediate personal tax question generally arises when money or property leaves the IRA, under the traditional or Roth distribution rules. The account’s custodian still must maintain transaction records and issue the information reporting required for the IRA.
Outside the IRA, IRS digital-asset guidance treats sales, exchanges, payments, mining, staking, hard forks and other dispositions as reportable examples. Do not assume that an IRA wrapper makes a personal wallet transaction an IRA transaction; the asset must be owned and transacted by the IRA under the custodian’s procedures.

In-kind transfers and in-kind distributions
In-kind transfer between trustees
An in-kind trustee transfer moves the actual cryptocurrency rather than selling it for cash. For the transfer to remain a direct transfer, the receiving trustee must receive it directly under documented custodian instructions. Confirm the exact asset, quantity, network and transaction path; a wallet address supplied by you can indicate a distribution if the custodian does not treat it as trustee-to-trustee.
In-kind rollover after a distribution
The same-property rule is strict: “The same property must be rolled over.” If you receive a specific quantity of a token, contributing a different token or an unrelated amount is not the same-property rollover. Keep blockchain transaction records and custodian statements that link the distributed property to the redeposit.
In-kind distribution to the owner
When cryptocurrency leaves the IRA for your personal wallet, the event is a distribution. Its taxability follows the IRA type, basis and age or exception rules; it is not made tax free merely because no dollars changed hands. The custodian’s valuation date and method affect the amount reported, and IRS materials do not prescribe a single universal valuation or token-support rule. Review the account agreement and obtain individualized tax advice for a large or unusual transfer.
Reporting and recordkeeping checklist
- Classify the event correctly as a contribution, direct trustee transfer, 60-day rollover, Roth conversion or distribution.
- Keep custodian statements, transfer forms, distribution notices, deposit confirmations and blockchain transaction identifiers.
- Record the exact token, quantity, network, dates and account registrations for any in-kind movement.
- Expect IRA rollovers and distributions to appear on the applicable federal return and information forms even when a rollover is not currently taxable. Common custodian forms can include Form 1099-R for distributions and Form 5498 for IRA contributions or rollovers; follow the forms actually issued for your transaction.
- Review digital-asset reporting questions for personal transactions. IRS Tax Tip 2024-21, dated March 26, 2024, lists sales, exchanges, payments, mining, staking, hard forks and other dispositions as examples.
- Check withholding. A taxable eligible rollover distribution paid to you generally has 20% mandatory withholding; a direct rollover can avoid that withholding.
- Use the current IRS publications. The IRS posted revised dates of January 15, 2026 for Publication 590-A and January 22, 2026 for Publication 590-B; forms and rules can change.
Common situations and the tax result
| Situation | Likely federal treatment | Key action |
|---|---|---|
| Old IRA sends crypto directly to a new IRA trustee | Generally tax free as a trustee-to-trustee transfer; not counted under the one-rollover-per-year rule. | Use custodian-to-custodian paperwork and verify direct delivery. |
| You receive Bitcoin, then deposit a different token within 60 days | Does not meet the same-property rollover rule described by Publication 590-A. | Do not substitute assets; obtain advice before the deadline. |
| You receive crypto and redeposit the same crypto after 75 days | The general 60-day requirement was missed; the distribution may be taxable unless an applicable waiver applies. | Contact a qualified tax professional promptly. |
| You take crypto from a traditional IRA before an exception applies | Generally taxable to the extent taxable, with a possible 10% additional tax. | Check age, exception, basis and reporting rules before distribution. |
| You convert traditional IRA assets to a Roth IRA | A Roth conversion is not subject to the one-rollover-per-year limit, but taxable conversion income and a separate five-year recapture period can apply. | Document the conversion date and amount and plan for tax. |
| You move crypto from a Roth IRA to your personal wallet | Distribution qualification depends on the five-year rule, other conditions and Roth ordering rules. | Identify whether the amount is contribution, conversion or earnings. |
Limits of the federal rules
The rules above do not decide whether a particular custodian may hold a token, how staking rewards are credited, whether lending creates a prohibited transaction, how a disputed token value should be established, or what a state or foreign jurisdiction will tax. Those questions can change the result even when the federal IRA category is clear. Read the account agreement, obtain the custodian’s written procedure and consult a tax professional before moving a significant amount of cryptocurrency.
