Crypto can be too volatile for money you may need, but price swings are only one part of the decision. A token can lose value, become difficult to trade, or be trapped when a platform fails. You also must choose who controls the private keys, understand every fee (not just a trading commission), and check what protections actually apply. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and often volatile, and says investors should risk only money they can afford to lose entirely. That warning is specifically about crypto asset securities and related intermediaries; crypto assets differ in design, so no single coin’s characteristics should be treated as universal.
What makes crypto investing risky besides volatility?
Crypto prices can move sharply in either direction, and there is no reliable volatility percentage that applies to every asset. The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert lists several additional hazards: illiquidity, platform insolvency or bankruptcy, disappearing trading markets, withdrawal restrictions, fraud, technical glitches, hacking, malware, and regulatory changes. Its conclusion is direct: “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” Read the full alert at SEC’s crypto asset securities investor alert (March 23, 2023).

These risks can reinforce one another. A falling price may coincide with thin trading, so an order cannot be filled near the quoted price. A technical outage can prevent withdrawals while the market is moving. If a provider enters bankruptcy, access to assets can be delayed or disputed. Fraudulent messages or malware can redirect a transfer that generally cannot be reversed. Regulatory action can also change whether a service or token is available in your jurisdiction.

Price loss and illiquidity are different
A volatile asset may still be tradable, allowing you to sell at the current market price (which could be much lower than your purchase price). An illiquid asset creates a second problem: few buyers, wide bid-ask spreads, trading halts, or a market that disappears. “I can sell if I need to” is therefore an assumption to verify, not a guarantee.

Decide how much loss you can actually absorb
Use money that is not needed for rent, debt payments, taxes, emergency reserves, or near-term goals. Do not treat a historical rally as a forecast. The SEC’s risk warning is not a prediction of any particular coin’s return; it is a reminder that a total loss is possible in the products and intermediaries covered by the alert.
What fees do crypto exchanges and investment products charge?
Comparing only a headline trading commission can produce the wrong answer. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin recommends checking annual asset-based fees, transaction fees, asset-transfer fees, and account setup and closure fees. A product that gives crypto exposure through a securities account can add its own sponsor or operating fee. Ask for the current schedule that applies to your asset, order size, payment method, withdrawal method, custody arrangement, and account tier; fees can change and may differ by route.
| Fee category | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trading or transaction fee | Percentage, flat charge, spread, minimum order, and whether the quoted price includes the fee | A low commission can be offset by a large spread or minimum charge. |
| Network or transfer fee | Charges for sending assets in or out, plus any network fee passed through at the time | Small transfers can be uneconomic when a fixed fee applies. |
| Annual asset-based fee | Percentage charged on the value held and how often it is deducted | Recurring charges reduce the amount that remains invested. |
| Account setup or closure fee | One-time charges to open, close, or move an account | These can matter when switching providers or consolidating holdings. |
| Product sponsor or operating fee | Expense charged by an exchange-traded product (ETP), where applicable | You pay for the product structure even if you never use a crypto platform directly. |
The SEC’s July 23, 2025 fee bulletin illustrates the effect of compounding costs with a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing at 4% annually for 20 years. It is an educational scenario, not a crypto return estimate, historical performance, or forecast. The general lesson is that every recurring or transaction charge reduces the portion of a portfolio left invested and earning returns. See SEC’s “How Fees and Expenses Affect Your Investment Portfolio” (July 23, 2025).

What does custody mean, and should crypto stay on an exchange or in a wallet?
Custody is about who controls the private keys that authorize transactions. The SEC explains: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” The keys are what let software or a device access assets recorded on a blockchain. A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase) can restore a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to move the assets.

| Arrangement | Who controls keys? | Main responsibility and exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody wallet | You (or whoever has the seed phrase) | You must protect backups, devices, passwords, and transaction details. Losing or exposing the phrase can mean permanent loss or theft. |
| Third-party exchange or custodian | The provider controls the keys | You depend on its security, solvency, withdrawal process, policies, and access controls. A hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy can block access. |
| ETP in a securities account | The product’s custody chain holds the underlying assets; you hold ETP shares | You avoid handling wallet keys but accept product, sponsor, broker, and market-structure risks and pay product expenses. |
Self-custody: control with operational responsibility
Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange for key control, but it does not remove market risk or make mistakes reversible. A hardware wallet is a physical device that can keep keys isolated from an internet-connected computer. It costs money, requires careful setup, and still depends on the seed phrase and your transaction decisions. It cannot prevent a price collapse, a fraudulent address, a compromised backup, or every form of attack.
Write the recovery phrase down using a durable method, keep it offline and private, and never enter it into a website, form, or support chat. Do not photograph it or store it in an unprotected cloud account. Verify receiving addresses on the device and send a small test transaction before moving a larger balance.

Before depositing assets, ask the provider:
- How are keys protected, and which assets are kept online (“hot”) versus offline (“cold”)?
- Is storage performed by a subcontractor, and who can authorize a withdrawal?
- Are customer assets segregated, lent out, or commingled with company funds?
- What happens to withdrawals and records if the firm fails or enters bankruptcy?
- What does insurance cover, and what exclusions apply to hacking, employee theft, or market losses?
- What identity, privacy, account-recovery, and multifactor-authentication controls are available?
- What custody, transfer, and other account fees apply?
“Insured” is not the same as “guaranteed.” Read the policy or disclosure for covered events, limits, deductibles, and excluded losses.

Direct crypto ownership versus a bitcoin or ether ETP
An exchange-traded product changes how you obtain exposure; it does not remove the underlying asset’s volatility. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 bulletin discusses products that provide exposure to bitcoin or ether. They may let you use a securities account without opening a crypto-platform account or managing wallet keys, but they have their own trust structure, custody arrangements, trading mechanics, and sponsor fee. Review the product’s prospectus for what it owns or tracks, valuation method, creation and redemption process, and service providers.
For the spot bitcoin and ether ETPs discussed in that bulletin, the SEC notes that they are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and therefore are not subject to that law’s requirements applicable to registered funds, including certain valuation and custody requirements. That statement is limited to the products covered by the bulletin; it should not be generalized to every fund or crypto-linked security. See SEC’s ETP bulletin (September 9, 2024).
| Decision factor | Direct self-custody | Third-party platform | Bitcoin or ether ETP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Key control | You control keys | Provider controls keys | Product custody chain controls underlying assets |
| Access failure | Lost, stolen, or damaged backup can block access | Outage, restrictions, hack, or insolvency can block access | Broker, exchange, product, or service-provider disruption can affect trading |
| Typical cost areas | Network fees and possible hardware purchase | Trading, withdrawal, transfer, custody, and account fees | Brokerage costs plus recurring sponsor or operating fee |
| Exposure | Direct asset ownership and its market risks | Direct asset ownership plus provider terms | Price exposure through a security; read the product disclosure |
How to evaluate a crypto service before depositing money
- Set a loss limit. Decide the maximum amount you could lose without compromising essential expenses or emergency savings. Treat it as a risk budget, not a target allocation.
- Choose the access route. Decide whether you need direct ownership and can manage keys, prefer a regulated securities account for an ETP, or accept third-party custody. Write down what you give up and what you gain.
- Read the current disclosures. Confirm the supported asset, trading and withdrawal rules, custody model, bankruptcy treatment, lending or commingling practices, privacy terms, and geographic availability.
- Calculate the complete cost. Request a quote for your expected order and transfer size. Include spread, commissions, network charges, recurring asset-based or sponsor fees, and setup or closure charges.
- Harden account security. Use a unique password, multifactor authentication, withdrawal address controls where available, and a separate email for financial accounts. Ignore unsolicited “support” messages and verify domains independently.
- Test the process. Make a small purchase and, if you plan to self-custody, a small withdrawal to a verified address. Confirm how long it takes and what it costs before increasing the balance.
- Prepare records and recovery. Keep transaction records, fee information, and a written plan for device loss or incapacity. Store any seed phrase offline and never disclose it.
- Review periodically. Recheck fees, custody terms, withdrawal limits, insurance language, and regulatory notices. A provider that was suitable last year may change its terms.
What can go wrong, and what should you do?
The exchange pauses withdrawals
Do not send more funds while access is restricted. Save account statements and transaction IDs, read the provider’s official notices, and check whether the restriction applies to one asset or the entire account. A pause may reflect maintenance, compliance review, liquidity stress, or insolvency; the cause determines what remedies exist.
The provider fails or enters bankruptcy
Customer access and ownership claims can become part of a legal process. The SEC warns that a third-party custodian’s hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy may cause customers to lose access. Review the custody agreement for segregation, lending, rehypothecation, and insolvency terms before depositing. Do not assume deposit insurance or securities-account protection applies to crypto assets; verify the specific product and account structure.

A seed phrase or private key is exposed
Move assets to a newly generated wallet using a device you trust, if you can do so safely, and stop using the compromised phrase. Never paste the phrase into a website or provide it to “support.” If you lose the phrase without another valid backup, there may be no recovery path.
A token can no longer be traded
Check whether the market is paused, delisted, or merely illiquid. Review official notices and withdrawal deadlines, but beware of urgent messages demanding an additional “unlock” payment. A market that disappears may leave no practical exit even when the blockchain record still exists.
What protections should an investor expect?
Crypto accounts do not automatically carry the deposit or securities protections people associate with bank deposits or registered securities accounts. Protection depends on the exact asset, account, intermediary, and legal structure. Ask the provider to identify, in writing, which regulator oversees the service, what assets are covered by any insurance, whether customer property is segregated, and what happens during insolvency. Avoid statements that imply FDIC or SIPC coverage for crypto assets unless the applicable official disclosure expressly establishes it.
