Inheriting cryptocurrency usually is not a federal income-tax event for the beneficiary. The starting basis is generally the asset’s fair market value at the decedent’s death (or an estate’s properly elected alternate valuation date). Tax usually becomes due when you later sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of the inherited crypto, using that inherited basis to measure gain or loss.
The result depends on the estate’s records, the exact date and valuation method, any consistent-basis reporting, and whether the assets produced income after death. Preserve the evidence before moving coins, and keep federal income-tax questions separate from estate, inheritance, state, and foreign-country rules.

Do you owe tax when you inherit crypto?
For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, receiving crypto from a decedent generally does not itself create taxable income for the beneficiary. Instead, Internal Revenue Code §1014 generally sets the basis of inherited property at its fair market value on the decedent’s date of death. The statute describes the basis as the property’s fair market value “at the date of the decedent’s death.”
That rule is often called a basis adjustment or step-up, but the result is not automatically an increase. If the asset was worth less at death than the decedent’s basis, the inherited basis can be lower. The relevant value is the date-of-death value unless the estate validly uses an alternate valuation date. Do not substitute the price you see on an exchange today, the price when the executor bought the asset, or a later transfer price.

An estate may have a separate federal estate-tax filing and liability. Estate tax is imposed on the estate under rules that are different from the beneficiary’s income tax. A distribution can also carry information about income the estate earned while it held the crypto. Those issues must be reviewed independently.
How inherited crypto basis is determined
Date-of-death value
For most inherited property, the default starting point is the crypto’s fair market value at the decedent’s death. For a volatile token, document the precise date and time used, the units held, the wallet or exchange, and the pricing source. If the asset trades across venues with materially different prices, preserve the valuation method used by the executor or appraiser rather than choosing a convenient quote later.
Alternate valuation date
An estate that makes a valid alternate-valuation election may use that elected date for property reported to beneficiaries. Ask the executor whether the election was made and which valuation date applies to each asset. Your basis should follow the estate’s reported value, not an independently selected date.

Consistent-basis reporting
When the estate is required to file Form 706 and provide Form 8971, Schedule A communicates basis information to beneficiaries who acquire certain property. The consistent-basis rule generally prevents a beneficiary from claiming an initial basis higher than the value reported on Schedule A. Keep the Schedule A you receive with your tax records and compare it with the estate inventory and your own wallet snapshot. If the documents disagree, ask the executor or the estate’s tax professional to resolve the discrepancy before you sell.
| Situation | Basis starting point | What to retain |
|---|---|---|
| No alternate valuation election identified | Fair market value at the decedent’s death | Date and time of death, units, valuation source and method |
| Valid alternate valuation election | Fair market value on the elected alternate date | Election details and the value used for each asset |
| Form 8971 and Schedule A issued | Value reported to the beneficiary, subject to consistent-basis rules | Complete Form 8971, Schedule A, delivery records and estate correspondence |
| Records conflict | Not settled by a current exchange quote | Written explanation from the executor, appraiser or tax adviser |
What to request from the executor
Request a complete package before accepting or moving the assets. The executor may hold information that you cannot reconstruct from a blockchain alone, especially for assets kept in institutional custody or wallets with incomplete historical exports.
- The estate inventory identifying every coin, token, non-fungible token or other digital asset, its quantity, and the wallet or exchange holding it.
- The date-of-death valuation, including the pricing source, market used, time convention, foreign-exchange conversion and appraisal methodology.
- The status of Form 706 and, if applicable, Form 8971 with Schedule A for the property you received.
- Distribution records showing the date, quantity, transaction ID and receiving address for each transfer to you.
- Any fiduciary income-tax return and Schedule K-1 reporting income earned while the estate held the assets.
- Exchange statements, wallet exports, staking statements, mining records, fork or airdrop notices, and records of fees or expenses.
- Correspondence explaining lost keys, frozen accounts, custodial claims, loans, collateral, or assets that were sold before distribution.
Ask the executor to identify which address or account corresponds to each line of the estate inventory. Preserve an audit trail before consolidating wallets or sending coins to a new exchange. A transfer between wallets that you control is not automatically a sale, but the transfer history is essential for proving that no disposition occurred and for matching later sales to the correct lots.

Build an evidence file for every inherited asset
Create one folder, spreadsheet or tax-workpaper record for each asset and each account. IRS basis guidance calls for enough detail to identify the asset and establish its acquisition date and time, units and U.S.-dollar fair market value. For inherited crypto, add custody and transfer evidence so another person can follow the chain from the estate to you.
- Estate documents: death certificate, will or trust excerpts that establish the distribution, letters of administration, inventory and distribution agreement.
- Valuation: death date and time zone, units, price per unit, total value, source, market or index used, conversion rate and any appraiser’s report.
- Executor records: Form 706 status, Form 8971, Schedule A, delivery confirmation and written explanations of adjustments.
- Blockchain evidence: wallet addresses, transaction IDs, block dates, exported transaction histories and screenshots only as supplemental evidence.
- Custodian evidence: account statements, trade history, deposit and withdrawal records, fee records and identity of the exchange or trustee.
- Post-inheritance activity: every sale, exchange, transfer, staking reward, mining receipt, fork, airdrop, lending payment and related fee.
Keep original exports in read-only storage and maintain a working copy for calculations. Record the date you downloaded each report. If a platform cannot provide historical data, save the platform’s written response and use on-chain records, executor records and contemporaneous pricing evidence to explain the gap.
A practical reporting workflow
- Freeze the death-date snapshot. List each asset, quantity, wallet or exchange, date and time of death, and the U.S.-dollar price source. Do this before moving coins whenever possible.
- Reconcile the snapshot to the estate. Match your quantities and values to the estate inventory, appraisal and Schedule A/Form 8971 if issued. Investigate differences caused by fees, transfers, forks, collateral, or sales by the estate.
- Document the distribution. Record when the estate transferred each lot to you, the sending and receiving addresses, transaction ID, quantity and any transfer fee. A distribution date is not normally a new fair-market-value basis date.
- Track every later disposition. A sale for dollars, an exchange for another token, or another taxable disposition requires proceeds, the inherited basis, fees and the date. Transfers between wallets you own should remain in the records even though they are not themselves a sale.
- Report a sale or exchange. Use Form 8949 to list dispositions and carry the totals to Schedule D. Identify the property as inherited crypto, use the applicable acquisition and disposition dates requested by the form, and retain the lot-level calculation. Answer the digital-asset question on Form 1040 or the applicable return accurately.
- Separate income-producing activity. Keep staking, mining, forks, airdrops, lending and similar receipts in a separate schedule. Depending on the facts, these may be ordinary income and may belong on Schedule 1 or another applicable schedule rather than being folded into a capital-gain calculation.
How to report a later sale
Suppose an inherited holding has a documented basis of $30,000 and you later sell it for $42,000 after allowable transaction costs. The starting calculation is proceeds minus adjusted basis, producing a $12,000 gain before applying the character and holding-period rules that fit your facts. If the sale price is below basis, the result may be a loss. Keep the calculation with the transaction statement and the evidence supporting the $30,000 inherited basis.

Inherited property generally receives special holding-period treatment for capital-gain purposes, but the exact reporting still depends on the asset and transaction. Do not assume that swapping one token for another is tax-free; an exchange can be a disposition even when no dollars reach your bank account. Fees, partial sales and lots acquired through post-death activity must be matched carefully.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Post-inheritance income is a separate issue
| Activity after death | Why it needs separate records | Possible reporting area |
|---|---|---|
| Staking rewards | Rewards may be income when received or otherwise recognized under the applicable facts, then may have a separate basis when sold | Schedule 1 or another applicable schedule, followed by disposition reporting if sold |
| Mining | Receipt, operating costs and whether activity is a trade or business can affect treatment | Applicable income schedule and later Form 8949/Schedule D for sales |
| Forks or airdrops | New units require records of when received, quantity and value, even if the original asset was inherited | Applicable income reporting and later disposition forms |
| Estate-held income | Income earned before distribution may belong to the estate and pass through on a fiduciary return or Schedule K-1 | Fiduciary return and beneficiary reporting as shown on the K-1 |
Do not add staking or mining receipts to the inherited basis simply because they arrived in the same wallet. Create a new lot with its own date, quantity, value and supporting statement unless your tax adviser determines a different treatment.

Federal income and estate tax
The federal basis rule under §1014 addresses the beneficiary’s basis in property acquired from a decedent. Estate-tax filing and valuation rules determine what the estate reports and, where applicable, what Schedule A communicates. One does not replace the other.

State inheritance and estate taxes
Federal rules do not settle whether your state imposes an inheritance tax, an estate tax, or a filing requirement. Residency, the decedent’s domicile, where an entity or custodian is located, and the type of property can matter. Ask a professional familiar with both the estate’s state and your state before assuming that no tax is due.
Non-U.S. estates and beneficiaries
Other countries can classify crypto as an estate asset and use a different date-of-death valuation. HM Revenue & Customs, for example, states that cryptoassets are treated as estate assets in much the same way as bank accounts, property, shares and investments, with date-of-death value relevant to an inheritance-tax return. A U.S. basis analysis cannot be transplanted to a foreign return without local advice.
When self-preparation is reasonable—and when it is risky
| Factor | Lower-complexity case | Professional help is prudent |
|---|---|---|
| Estate filings | No Form 706 or Form 8971 issue, with clear executor records | Form 706, Form 8971, Schedule A, amended estate filings or a basis conflict |
| Number of accounts | One custodian and a small number of clearly documented lots | Many wallets, exchanges, bridges, custodians or missing history |
| Activity | Simple hold followed by one sale | Staking, mining, DeFi, lending, collateral, forks, airdrops or frequent swaps |
| Valuation | Reliable contemporaneous price and matching estate value | Thinly traded tokens, multiple markets, disputed prices or no date-of-death quote |
| Jurisdiction | One U.S. state and no foreign reporting | State inheritance or estate tax exposure, non-U.S. residence, foreign estate or dual filing |
A CPA, enrolled agent or estate attorney can help reconcile Form 8971, fiduciary returns, state filings and complex digital-asset activity. Bring the evidence file rather than a single exchange screenshot; the quality of the records often determines whether the basis can be defended.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using today’s price: Recalculate from the documented death date or elected alternate valuation date.
- Assuming every inheritance is a step-up: Check whether the property was included in the estate, whether an alternate valuation election applies, and whether community-property or other special rules change the result.
- Ignoring Schedule A: Obtain Form 8971 and Schedule A when applicable; a higher self-selected basis may violate the consistent-basis rule.
- Losing wallet history after consolidation: Export transactions and save addresses and transaction IDs before moving assets.
- Treating a token swap as a nontaxable transfer: Record the fair-market-value proceeds and basis for each disposed asset.
- Combining rewards with inherited lots: Track staking, mining, fork and airdrop receipts separately with their own values and dates.
- Reporting only federal income tax: Check state inheritance or estate-tax rules and any foreign filing obligations.
Final beneficiary checklist
- Obtain the death certificate, estate inventory and distribution records.
- Confirm the date-of-death or elected alternate valuation date and the valuation methodology.
- Request Form 8971 and Schedule A if the estate issued them.
- Capture units, wallet or exchange, date and time, U.S.-dollar value, source and transaction IDs.
- Reconcile your snapshot to the executor’s reported estate value before selling.
- Track transfers, sales, exchanges, fees and post-death income in separate lots.
- Use Form 8949 and Schedule D for dispositions, and the applicable income schedule for staking, mining, forks, airdrops or other receipts.
- Review state, estate-tax and cross-border consequences before filing.
