Know your customer (KYC) is the identity and customer-due-diligence part of an exchange’s compliance process. Anti-money laundering (AML) is the broader, continuing program that uses KYC information together with risk assessment, transaction monitoring, sanctions controls, suspicious-transaction reporting, record keeping and transfer-data requirements. Passing KYC therefore does not mean an account has been cleared of every AML concern; it means the exchange has completed a defined identification step, after which monitoring continues.
KYC and AML in one sentence
KYC answers, “Who is this customer, and who ultimately owns or controls the account?” AML asks, “Does this customer relationship or transaction present money-laundering, terrorist-financing or sanctions risk, and what should the exchange do about it?” KYC normally happens at onboarding and during scheduled or risk-triggered refreshes. AML covers onboarding, the entire customer relationship, individual transfers, the exchange’s systems and its governance.

Crypto regulations often use several overlapping terms. A law may refer to customer due diligence (CDD), a customer identification program (CIP), AML/CFT controls, a virtual-asset service provider (VASP) or a crypto-asset service provider (CASP), rather than using “KYC” as a legal label. In everyday exchange support language, however, KYC usually means identity verification and related due diligence.

| Question | KYC | AML |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Identify and verify the customer and, where relevant, beneficial owners. | Prevent, detect and respond to illicit finance across customers, transactions and the exchange’s control environment. |
| When it operates | At account opening, before certain services, and when information must be refreshed. | Continuously, with risk-based reviews, transaction monitoring, investigations and reporting. |
| Typical data | Name, date of birth, address, government ID, liveness or other verification evidence, and ownership or control information for an entity. | KYC data plus transaction history, wallet and counterparty information, customer risk factors, sanctions results, source or purpose information when needed, alerts and case records. |
| Scope | The customer and the nature and purpose of the relationship. | Customers, transfers, products, wallets, systems, employees, controls and governance. |
| Possible outcome | Approve verification, request more evidence, limit features or decline onboarding. | Continue normal service, increase monitoring, request clarification, restrict or block activity, file a report or end the relationship. |
The two functions overlap because AML cannot assess a customer effectively without reliable identity and ownership information. They are not interchangeable: an identity check is one input into a wider AML risk decision.

Why a crypto exchange asks for your ID
An exchange needs to connect an account to a real person or organization. Identity evidence helps it distinguish customers with similar names, screen for sanctions and politically exposed-person risks where required, investigate unusual activity and respond to lawful requests from authorities. For a company or other legal entity, the exchange may also need to identify and verify the natural persons who own or control it.
FinCEN’s customer-due-diligence framework says covered financial institutions must identify and verify beneficial owners of legal-entity customers and understand the nature and purpose of customer relationships. The precise documents and thresholds depend on the exchange’s jurisdiction, services, customer risk and applicable law; there is no single worldwide KYC checklist.
Typical requests can include a passport, national identity card or driving licence; an address document; date of birth and nationality; a selfie, liveness check or remote-interview step; business-registration and ownership records; and an explanation of intended account use. An exchange can ask for different evidence from two customers because their countries, products, legal structures or risk profiles differ.

How KYC works at an exchange
- Account details are collected. You enter legal name, date of birth, residence, nationality and contact details. The name should match your identity document and, where applicable, your payment account.
- Documents and identity are verified. The exchange checks document validity and may compare a selfie or liveness signal with the document photo. Remote-onboarding controls are addressed in EU customer-due-diligence rules, but the exact method is set by the provider and local law.
- Ownership and control are established. A company, trust or similar customer may have to provide registration details and identify beneficial owners and controlling persons.
- The relationship is understood. The exchange may ask why you need the account, expected activity, source of funds or wealth, occupation, business model or countries connected to the activity. These questions support risk assessment; they are not necessarily accusations.
- Risk controls are applied. The provider can screen the information against sanctions and other legally required lists, assign a customer-risk level and decide which products or limits are appropriate.
- The profile is refreshed. Information is updated when it expires, changes, becomes inconsistent with activity or is needed for a higher-risk review. Verification is not a permanent status.
A failed or incomplete check does not by itself establish criminal conduct. It may result from an unreadable document, a name or address mismatch, unsupported country, duplicate account, expired evidence, an ownership structure the exchange cannot verify, or information that needs clarification.
What AML does after onboarding
AML turns the customer profile into an ongoing control process. FinCEN describes risk-based ongoing CDD as understanding the nature and purpose of customer relationships, conducting continuing monitoring for suspicious transactions and maintaining or updating customer information. FATF expects VASPs to use preventive measures comparable to those used by financial institutions.

Risk assessment and customer due diligence
The exchange evaluates factors such as the customer’s location, products used, business type, expected volume, counterparties, wallet exposure and previous alerts. A low-risk retail account and a high-volume business account may receive different review intensity. Risk ratings can change as circumstances change.
Transaction and wallet monitoring
Systems look for activity inconsistent with the stated purpose or known profile, rapid movement through multiple accounts, unusual geographic patterns, exposure to sanctioned or high-risk services, structuring designed to avoid controls, or other indicators defined by the exchange’s program. An alert is a prompt for review, not proof that a transaction is illicit.
Investigation and information requests
Compliance staff may ask for invoices, contracts, bank statements, tax records, wallet ownership evidence, source-of-funds explanations or the purpose of a transfer. They may compare your answer with account history and public or regulatory information. Provide clear, consistent documents through the exchange’s authenticated support channel; do not send identity files to an address supplied in an unsolicited message.
Reporting, records and controls
Where legally required, the exchange can file a suspicious-transaction report with the relevant authority. It generally cannot tell a customer whether a report was filed. AML programs also require records, secure handling of data, internal controls, independent testing, staff training and a designated compliance officer or responsible individual. FinCEN summarizes these minimum program elements as internal controls, independent testing, compliance responsibility, training and appropriate risk-based ongoing CDD procedures.
Restrictions and exit decisions
An exchange can pause a deposit or withdrawal, restrict features, reject a transfer, request enhanced due diligence or close an account when risk cannot be managed or legal requirements cannot be met. A restriction may be temporary while information is reviewed. Do not create a second account to evade it; that can create additional risk signals and breach the provider’s terms.

Why an exchange asks for more information after you passed KYC
Initial KYC establishes a baseline. Later requests usually reflect a change in risk, a new product or transfer, an expiring document, a changed address or ownership structure, activity outside the expected profile, or a legal requirement to collect information about a particular transfer. A verified identity does not answer every AML question about the origin, destination or purpose of funds.

- A transfer needs context: the exchange must identify the originator or beneficiary, understand a self-hosted-wallet transfer or document the source of funds.
- Information became stale: an ID expired, an address changed, or a company’s ownership records were updated.
- An alert requires review: automated monitoring identified a pattern that a compliance analyst must resolve.
- The law or service changed: a new rule, product or jurisdiction requires additional due diligence.
Answer only through the official account interface or a verified support route. Check the requested document type, redact unrelated information where the process permits it, retain submission receipts and ask what feature is restricted and what evidence will resolve the review. Do not assume that a request means a report has been filed or that the exchange has reached a finding of wrongdoing.
How AML checks apply to a self-custody wallet
A self-custody wallet is controlled by the user rather than by the exchange. That does not place transfers outside AML controls when an exchange is involved. The provider still has to assess the risk of sending to or receiving from an address it does not hold.
EU rules require crypto-asset service providers to assess and mitigate money-laundering and terrorist-financing risks for transfers to or from self-hosted addresses. Depending on the risk and circumstances, measures can include identifying or verifying the originator or beneficiary, collecting additional information about the origin and destination, and applying enhanced ongoing monitoring.
What the exchange may ask you to do
- Enter the self-hosted address and state whether you control it.
- Complete a small verification transfer or sign a message, if the provider supports that method.
- Provide the beneficiary’s name or other required transfer details.
- Explain the purpose and source of funds when the transfer is high risk or inconsistent with your profile.
- Wait for review before the withdrawal is released.
Do not share a seed phrase or private key. An exchange may need a public address, a signature or transaction evidence; it should never need the secret that controls your wallet. Check the network carefully before sending because a wrong network can make assets unrecoverable independently of KYC or AML.

The European Commission says the transfer rules requiring providers to collect and make originator and beneficiary data accessible apply from 30 December 2024. The information requirement concerns the transfer parties and does not give the exchange control of a genuinely self-custodied wallet.

Crypto compliance is not governed by one global code. The same customer can face different documents, thresholds, transfer fields or retention periods depending on where the exchange is established, where it serves customers and which services it offers.
FATF’s global standards
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) says countries should understand virtual-asset risks, license or register VASPs and supervise them like other financial institutions. Its preventive-measures guidance calls for customer due diligence, record keeping, suspicious-transaction reporting and secure transmission of originator and beneficiary information. FATF’s page identifies a seventh targeted update dated 16 July 2026; national implementation still varies.
United States
FinCEN’s BSA framework distinguishes users from administrators and exchangers of virtual currency and explains when activities fall within money-services-business obligations. For covered institutions, the CDD rule requires a risk-based program, an understanding of the relationship’s nature and purpose, ongoing monitoring, information updates and beneficial-owner identification for legal entities. The FinCEN CDD FAQ was updated 6 May 2026. Whether a particular exchange or service is covered depends on its activities and status, so a U.S. customer should read the provider’s disclosures rather than assume every platform follows the same process.
European Union
MiCA provides a harmonized framework for crypto-asset services, while EU AML rules cover crypto-asset exchanges, prohibit anonymous crypto-asset accounts and add transfer-data and self-hosted-address controls. The European Commission’s transfer rules require providers involved in crypto-asset transfers to collect and make originator and beneficiary data accessible from 30 December 2024.

EU trading platforms and MiCA Article 76
ESMA’s MiCA Article 76 requires customer-due-diligence approval processes proportionate to money-laundering or terrorist-financing risk. It also requires controls against anonymous crypto-assets unless holders and transaction history can be identified. A platform operating in the EU therefore may request information that a customer of an exchange in another jurisdiction has not encountered.
What passing KYC does—and does not—mean
| Passing KYC means | It does not mean |
|---|---|
| The exchange has completed its current identity and, where applicable, ownership checks to the required standard. | The customer has been declared “safe” for every future transaction. |
| The account can access the services and limits allowed by the provider’s risk decision. | Future source-of-funds, sanctions, wallet or transfer questions are waived. |
| The submitted information was sufficiently consistent and verifiable at that time. | The exchange guarantees that every asset or counterparty connected to the account is legitimate. |
AML compliance is a control system, not a certificate issued to an individual customer. Monitoring can continue for as long as the relationship exists, and a previously approved account can be re-verified, restricted or closed when risk or legal obligations change.
How to complete checks with fewer delays
- Use your exact legal name and current residential address; keep spelling consistent across documents.
- Submit clear, uncropped images showing all corners, expiry dates and security features requested by the provider.
- Complete liveness or selfie steps in good lighting without filters, hats or reflections that obscure your face.
- For a business, prepare registration documents, ownership percentages, controlling-person details and an explanation of the business activity.
- Keep a concise record of expected volume, trading purpose, source of funds and the wallets you control.
- Answer follow-up questions directly and consistently; explain legitimate unusual activity before sending more funds.
- Use only the exchange’s logged-in upload flow or verified support domain, and enable strong account security.
- Allow time for manual review. Repeated submissions, duplicate accounts or contradictory explanations can prolong it.
Common misunderstandings
“KYC and AML are the same thing.”
KYC is the identity and customer-due-diligence component. AML includes KYC but also monitoring, reporting, records, governance and controls over transactions and systems.
Recommended Free Tools
“A decentralized or self-custody wallet means no AML rules apply.”
The wallet itself may not be operated by a regulated intermediary, but an exchange handling a transfer can still apply risk controls and collect originator, beneficiary or destination information.
“An AML alert proves I did something illegal.”
An alert is a risk signal generated for review. It can be resolved by ordinary explanations or documents, although the exchange may not disclose every internal rule or reporting decision.
“Every exchange asks for the same documents.”
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, products, customer risk, legal entity status and whether the transfer involves a self-hosted address. A service may lawfully require more or less information than another.
“The exchange can ask for my private key to verify a wallet.”
Never provide a seed phrase or private key. Public addresses, a signed message or a controlled test transfer can demonstrate control without surrendering the wallet’s secret.
A simple decision framework when your account is restricted
- Identify the stage. Is the issue an unreadable identity document, a periodic KYC refresh, a transaction review, a sanctions screening match or a self-hosted-wallet transfer?
- Read the exact request. Note the deadline, acceptable documents, supported file formats and whether deposits, trading or withdrawals are limited.
- Provide the narrowest complete answer. Submit relevant evidence and a coherent explanation; do not guess or alter documents.
- Secure the account. Change credentials if you suspect phishing, enable multifactor authentication and contact support through the logged-in channel.
- Escalate appropriately. Ask for the formal review or appeal route. If funds remain inaccessible, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than attempting to bypass controls.
Bottom line
KYC establishes who is using an exchange and who ultimately owns or controls an account. AML is the larger, ongoing framework that uses that information to assess risk, monitor transactions and wallets, collect transfer data, investigate alerts, keep records, report suspicious activity and apply restrictions when necessary. Your jurisdiction, the exchange’s services and your activity determine the exact checks. Treat a KYC approval as the start of an accountable customer relationship—not as a permanent exemption from AML review.
