Crutches vs. a Knee Scooter: Which Is Better for a Knee Injury?

Follow your clinician’s weight-bearing instructions first. For many knee injuries, crutches are the more relevant choice if you can use them safely: a knee scooter holds the affected leg bent on a pad, a position intended mainly for foot, ankle, or lower-leg recovery. Do not put an injured knee on a scooter without approval from your treating clinician.

Which aid fits a knee injury?

A consensus guideline from the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience recommends crutches after a knee injury for younger patients with good balance and upper-body strength. That is a qualified recommendation, not a rule for every patient or every diagnosis. The clinician treating you should decide whether crutches are appropriate and specify how much weight, if any, you may put through the injured leg. A knee scooter is built primarily for foot, ankle, or lower-leg recovery. The affected leg rests bent on a support pad, with the knee and upper lower leg supported. Because that position directly involves the knee, a scooter should not be treated as an automatic alternative for a knee injury; ask your clinician before using one. What your weight-bearing instructions mean for the choice

Injury labels alone do not tell you what is safe. Your clinician may prescribe non-weight-bearing, toe-touch, partial weight-bearing, or weight-bearing as tolerated. The device and the way you use it must follow that specific restriction. If you do not know your instructions, contact the treating team before walking with either aid. How crutches and a knee scooter differ

Decision factor Crutches Knee scooter
Position of injured leg Can help offload the knee without resting it on a scooter pad. Holds the affected leg bent, with the knee and upper lower leg supported; ask for clinical approval for a knee injury.
Physical demands Require balance, technique, and hand and arm support. Require balance plus strength and control in the uninjured leg; they may reduce upper-body demands.
Stairs and terrain Can be used on stairs with training and care. Do not use on stairs; steep or uneven surfaces are more difficult and require particular caution.
Fit and instruction Need proper adjustment and instruction. Adjust the pad and handlebars according to clinical guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.

When crutches may not be safe or practical

Crutches are not a good choice simply because they are more directly suited to many knee injuries. Poor balance, weakness, substantial pain, difficulty coordinating the steps, or discomfort from poor fit can make them unsafe or impractical. A clinician or physical therapist can assess your mobility and suggest an alternative, such as a walker or wheelchair, rather than leaving you to improvise.

Your crutches should be fitted and their use explained by a health professional. Cleveland Clinic notes that your healthcare provider will tell you which kind you need and for how long. When a knee scooter may be considered

A scooter can provide rolling mobility for some people recovering from injuries below the knee, while asking less of the arms than crutches. For a knee injury, however, its bent-knee support position needs explicit clinical approval. Even when approved, it still requires reliable balance and control of the uninjured leg.

What the scooter safety evidence does—and does not—show

A 2022 retrospective case series surveyed people after foot and ankle surgery, not people being treated for knee injuries. Of 196 people solicited, 101 responded (51.5%); their average age was 56.4 years, average BMI was 28.5, and average scooter use was 6.7 weeks. These describe that study’s respondents, not all scooter users. 2022 foot-and-ankle surgery study
