Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose browsers and devices from your actual audience, support commitments, and application risks—not from an attempt to test every possible combination. Then test key workflows throughout development, combining repeatable automation with direct checks on real or simulated environments.
Set a support policy around your audience
For an existing application, start with its own analytics: identify the browsers, operating systems, and device classes people actually use. For a new application, estimate who it is for and use regional browser-usage information as a fallback starting point. Regional statistics are not a substitute for your site’s audience data, and browser share varies by geography and audience. MDN’s cross-browser testing introduction and testing strategies explain this audience-led approach.
Write down the browser families, operating systems, device categories, and version bands you intend to support. Define what support means in practical terms: which user journeys must work, what visual or functional compromises are acceptable, and which environments are outside the commitment. MDN’s tiered approach is useful: test common modern environments thoroughly; retain a simpler but useful experience in older or less capable ones; and handle rare or unknown environments defensively. These are policy choices, not a universal list of browsers or versions.
Turn “works” into observable outcomes
For each critical workflow, state the expected result and acceptable fallback. A checkout might require users to complete payment and receive confirmation, while a decorative animation could be allowed to degrade gracefully. This distinction helps teams decide whether a compatibility issue blocks release, needs a fallback, or lies outside the support policy.

Map compatibility risks to user journeys
List the application features most likely to behave differently across browsers, then connect each risk to a user-visible consequence and a test. Compatibility references help identify where to investigate; they do not prove that your application works. MDN’s Browser Compatibility Data documents support for web APIs, JavaScript, and CSS.
| Risk to investigate | Question to answer | Test or response |
|---|---|---|
| Newer CSS or JavaScript feature | Does a target browser support the feature the application relies on? | Check compatibility data, exercise the relevant screen, and provide a fallback or revise the support policy if needed. |
| WebGL or other capability-dependent feature | Does the feature work in the target environment, and what happens when it does not? | Test the feature itself and verify that the fallback remains useful. |
| Critical user journey | Can a user finish the task, not merely load the page? | Automate the journey where practical and confirm its behavior in target browsers. |
| Device-specific interaction | Do layout, input, and navigation work on the intended device class? | Check on mobile platforms and, when available, physical devices as well as simulated environments. |
Decide whether each unsupported or inconsistent capability needs a fallback, a less capable but functional experience, or an explicit exclusion from support. Validate the actual application: a compatibility entry for one API cannot establish that a complete workflow, layout, or interaction is correct.
Test in small cycles while building
Plan coverage early, then repeat testing and fixes as features are implemented. MDN recommends checking each small part before committing further work rather than saving all testing for the end; issues are generally more expensive to address after more work depends on them. See its cross-browser testing introduction.
- Plan: choose the initial browser and device set from your support policy, and list high-risk workflows and features.
- Implement a small change: complete a feature or coherent slice rather than building the entire application before testing.
- Test and discover: run the relevant automated checks in your selected environments, then inspect important flows directly. Check keyboard and screen-reader navigability as part of usability review.
- Fix and iterate: resolve issues or document an intentional fallback, then repeat the cycle as implementation continues.
- Expand coverage: begin with a couple of stable desktop browsers available locally, bring mobile platforms in early, and add the rest of the policy’s target list.
This staged approach makes coverage manageable without implying that the first local browsers are sufficient for release. The complete target list still needs evidence before you declare the supported workflows ready.

Combine automation with direct observation
No single testing method establishes universal coverage. Choose a mix that reflects your audience, risks, hardware, and ability to maintain environments.
| Method | Useful for | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Automated end-to-end tests | Repeatable actions such as navigation, form submission, and checking expected behavior across selected projects. | Every real-device condition, visual detail, or usability issue. |
| Screenshot comparison | Spotting layout differences between selected environments or after a change. | That an interaction works or that a visual difference is necessarily a defect. |
| Manual browser checks | Investigating failures and observing details automation may miss. | Repeatable breadth unless the checks are deliberately documented and repeated. |
| Physical devices | Direct inspection in the hardware and interaction context you can access. | All models, operating-system versions, or browsers your audience may use. |
| Emulators and virtual machines | Broadening environment coverage when physical hardware is limited. | Perfect equivalence to every physical device. |
| External user testing | Feedback from people outside the development team about actual use. | A comprehensive compatibility matrix by itself. |
For standards-oriented automation, W3C describes WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for programs to control browsers remotely. WebDriver BiDi adds bidirectional event communication. The W3C Browser Testing and Tools Working Group also connects its work with Web Platform Tests, which help assess interoperability among browser implementations. Standards infrastructure supports testing work; it does not replace application-specific checks.
Choose automation that matches the browsers you support
Playwright’s default configuration includes Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. That is useful engine coverage, but a bundled engine build is not the same as testing every branded browser. Playwright documents branded Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels for cases where their behavior matters, including media codec behavior and enterprise policies. Consult the Playwright browser documentation for setup and current details.
When the default projects are enough
Use the default projects when they align with your support policy and risks. Keep Playwright and its browser builds current: Playwright recommends updating so its browser versions stay current and can help catch upcoming browser changes. Record which project and browser build ran in CI so a passing result has a clear scope.

When to test branded Chrome or Edge
Add branded browser channels when your product depends on behavior not represented by the default project you are using—for example, the cited media codec or enterprise-policy cases. Do not treat a Chromium project result as proof that every Chrome- or Edge-specific configuration works.
When hosted environments make sense
If maintaining enough browser and device environments locally is impractical, hosted browser automation services can broaden access. MDN names BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as commercial browser testing applications in its testing strategies guidance. Compare a service against your matrix, required branded behavior, repeatability needs, device coverage, and environment-maintenance burden; verify current catalogs and commercial terms directly before choosing.
Make screenshots useful without mistaking them for full tests
Use screenshots to compare rendering in named target environments and investigate changes, not as a proxy for functional or accessibility coverage. A visual difference can be intentional, while identical-looking screenshots do not establish that forms, navigation, keyboard interaction, or assistive-technology behavior work.
For a repeatable screenshot in your own browser-testing setup, capture the same route, viewport, and application state in each target browser. Stabilize dynamic content where possible, and review differences in context rather than treating every pixel change as a failure. ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first when you want screenshot capture by API or an MCP server for AI agents: ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose coverage by evidence, risk, and maintenance cost
Before adding another environment or tool, compare it against the work it covers and the burden it introduces. A defensible strategy asks:
- Does it represent an audience segment or support commitment?
- Does it test the branded browser behavior or device condition the feature needs?
- Can important user journeys be repeated automatically?
- Are visual differences, functionality, accessibility, and device-specific interactions all addressed where relevant?
- Can the team keep the framework and browser builds current?
- Do local devices and virtual environments suffice, or is hosted access needed?
Revisit the matrix when audience data, application features, browser behavior, or support commitments change. Browser shares, supported versions, framework builds, and hosted service catalogs are not fixed, so avoid turning a sensible current policy into a permanent universal browser list.
Troubleshoot common strategy failures
“It passed Chromium, so it works in Chrome and Edge”
Cause: treating an engine project as proof of every branded browser configuration. Fix: add branded Chrome or Edge channels when relevant behavior such as codecs or enterprise policies is part of the support requirement, and consult the Playwright browser documentation.

“We will test everything at the end”
Cause: deferring compatibility checks until many features depend on the same implementation. Fix: test each small implementation phase, investigate discrepancies, and iterate before building further on the affected behavior.
“The compatibility table says the API is supported”
Cause: confusing API support data with proof that the application workflow works. Fix: use MDN Browser Compatibility Data to identify risk, then test the real flow and its fallback in target environments.

“A screenshot diff failed, so the feature is broken”
Cause: interpreting a visual change without checking whether it is expected or affects use. Fix: inspect the changed region in context, then test the interaction and relevant keyboard or screen-reader path separately.
“Our virtual device check proves every phone works”
Cause: overgeneralizing from a simulated environment. Fix: use emulators and virtual machines to widen coverage, and add physical-device checks where available and appropriate to risk.
