Before launch, choose a documented set of browsers and devices based on your audience and requirements, then verify that the site’s key tasks, layout, and accessibility work on that set. No team can test every browser-and-device combination, and a successful check does not require pixel-identical rendering everywhere. It requires a usable, reliable experience on the configurations that matter to your visitors.
1. Agree on the browsers and devices to support
Start with the people the website is meant to serve—not a universal browser list. MDN notes that testing every browser and device combination is impractical; “important” combinations are generally those common among the target audience. Use first-party audience data or other relevant audience research, and account for geography and project requirements when deciding what belongs in the test matrix. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing and its testing-strategies guide explain how to select targets.
- Record browser families and versions: include the desktop and mobile browsers your audience uses, and specify supported versions rather than saying only “modern browsers.”
- Record operating systems and device classes: distinguish desktop, phone, and tablet configurations where behavior may differ. Add representative viewport sizes.
- Include older versions deliberately: support them when audience evidence, contractual requirements, or the site’s purpose justifies the cost. Document exclusions and get the site owner’s agreement.
- Identify feature dependencies: list CSS, JavaScript, and browser APIs that core tasks rely on, then check their support in the chosen targets.
- Define “works” for each target: specify required behavior and acceptable degradation for nonessential enhancements. Record known exceptions.
Desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, along with common phone and tablet browsers on iOS and Android, are candidates to consider—not a mandate to test every one. Choose the actual set from your audience and requirements.
2. Pick critical user journeys
Choose the tasks that determine whether the site is useful. For each target configuration, run those journeys from entry to completion, not just the landing page. A content site might check navigation to key information; a service site might check a form; an online shop might check a purchase flow. Use examples that match the site’s real features.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start from the page or entry point a visitor would realistically use.
- Complete the task using the interface, including menus, links, buttons, and inputs.
- Check validation, confirmation, loading, and error states where the journey includes them.
- Confirm the visitor can recover from an understandable error and complete the task without a workaround that is unavailable to the intended audience.
Keep journey steps and expected outcomes consistent across browsers. That makes it easier to tell a browser-specific defect from a problem in the site itself.
3. Check responsive layout and visual integrity
Inspect key pages at representative phone, tablet, and desktop viewport sizes. Look for problems that affect reading or interaction—not merely small differences in font rendering or spacing between platforms.
- Confirm content remains visible and legible, with no unintended clipping, overlap, or horizontal scrolling.
- Check navigation, forms, dialogs, images, and interactive controls at narrow and wide viewports.
- Verify that changes in viewport size do not make essential controls unreachable or cover important content.
- Compare against the site’s visual requirements while allowing reasonable platform differences; do not make pixel identity the pass condition.
Viewport emulation is a useful way to expand the first pass, but it does not establish how every browser behaves on physical hardware. Confirm important behavior on real target devices when available. MDN discusses physical devices as well as emulators and virtual machines in its cross-browser testing guidance.

4. Verify browser feature support and fallbacks
Review compatibility data for newer CSS, JavaScript, and browser APIs that the site depends on. MDN’s browser-compatibility data can help identify support differences for a specific feature and browser version; use it to focus tests rather than assuming a feature is available everywhere.
- For a feature essential to a core journey, test it in every supported target and provide an alternative if it is unavailable.
- For nonessential enhancements, decide what acceptable graceful degradation looks like and verify that the underlying content or task remains usable.
- Test browser- or operating-system-dependent behavior directly when it matters. Media playback is a particular case: codec availability can vary by platform and browser build.
Playwright’s documentation notes platform variation and describes its browser projects and device emulation at Playwright Projects. Emulation can broaden coverage, but it should not replace direct checks where the relevant behavior depends on the actual platform.
5. Include accessibility in the compatibility pass
A feature that renders but cannot be operated or understood is not working for everyone who needs it. Check essential journeys with assistive input as well as a pointer.

- Screen reader: use representative target platforms to check that controls, labels, page structure, and status or error information are understandable.
- Fallback experience: verify that core content and functionality remain accessible when nonessential effects or advanced features are unavailable.
State the project’s accessibility target and applicable requirements. MDN gives WCAG AA as an example target, not a substitute for determining the standard that applies to your project. Its guidance on cross-browser testing covers accessibility as part of the process.
6. Combine automated checks with hands-on testing
Automate repeatable regression checks for important journeys, then use manual testing to cover behavior that automation and viewport emulation cannot fully establish. MDN recommends checking changes during development, beginning with a couple of stable browsers and a mobile platform, then widening coverage to the agreed target matrix. That catches defects earlier without requiring the full matrix for every small change.
Use Playwright for representative browser projects
Playwright projects can run tests in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; its documentation also describes branded Chrome and Edge channels and emulated mobile or tablet device configurations. Configure projects to match the agreed matrix instead of treating the framework’s defaults as your support policy. See Playwright’s Projects documentation for project configuration and available options.

- Run automated tests across a representative subset of browser projects on routine changes.
- Add branded Chrome or Edge channels when those browsers are explicit targets or requirements.
- Use device profiles to cover mobile and tablet layouts efficiently, then confirm important behavior on actual target hardware when possible.
- Keep Playwright and its browser builds current so the tests cover recent browser versions and expose changes early, as Playwright recommends.
Automation is especially useful for repeating critical flows and spotting regressions. Keep hands-on checks for accessibility, interactions, platform-dependent behavior, and device-specific issues.
Use screenshots to inspect rendered pages
For visual review, capture representative pages at the viewports in your matrix and compare them against the visual requirements. Screenshots help expose layout shifts, clipped content, or an unexpected responsive state, but they do not prove that controls work or that a page is accessible. A screenshot API is a rendering aid, not a substitute for running the site’s journeys in target browsers. ScreenshotNeo offers website screenshots through an API and an MCP server; its capture options include device presets and custom viewports.

8. Or skip the browser setup
If you need page screenshots without setting up a browser capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a single GET request. For example, this cURL command captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. The MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
