Treat success as a statement about finished work—not merely a process that started—and give the expected schedule enough grace for normal runtime and delivery variation.
1. Monitor scheduler delivery and job completion separately
A scheduled job can fail at more than one boundary. The scheduler may not invoke the target, delivery may be throttled or exhausted after retries, or the target may run but fail to finish its useful work. A single signal cannot distinguish all of these states.

For AWS EventBridge Scheduler, CloudWatch metrics include InvocationAttemptCount, TargetErrorCount, throttling metrics, and InvocationDroppedCount. These help diagnose the scheduler-to-target path. A completion heartbeat from the job answers a different question: did the application reach the end state that matters? Use both when delivery and successful work are both operational requirements. AWS documents the EventBridge Scheduler metrics.
2. Send success only after meaningful work completes
Place the success request after the operation being monitored. If the heartbeat fires when a process starts, an execution that later hangs or fails can look healthy.

For example, Healthchecks.io documents a shell pattern that runs a backup and pings only if it exits successfully:
backup.sh && curl ...The && ensures the success ping is not sent when the backup command fails. The documented curl example includes retries and a request timeout; those are example settings, not universal defaults. See Healthchecks.io’s cron-job monitoring documentation.

Where the monitoring system supports lifecycle signals, report a start separately from the final outcome. A start signal helps distinguish “never began” from “began, then stalled”; a failure signal or exit-code report preserves the failure state. Healthchecks.io documents /start and /fail ping suffixes, while Better Stack documents failure reporting that can include an exit code or output. 3. Match the monitor to the question
A heartbeat is a dead-man’s-switch pattern: the process checks in, and the monitor alerts when the expected check-in is absent. It fits periodic work such as backups and imports. Healthchecks.io describes heartbeat monitoring as a “type of dead man’s switch.”

A job heartbeat does not prove that a website or API is reachable from outside. Healthchecks.io explicitly excludes website uptime monitoring by HTTP requests from its intended use. If both job completion and service availability matter, use a completion heartbeat for the job and a separate external endpoint or API probe for availability. 4. Set the schedule and grace period around real timing
Configure the expected interval from the job’s actual schedule, then choose a grace period that tolerates ordinary runtime and delivery variation without allowing a materially late run to pass unnoticed. Too little grace creates noise; too much delays detection.

Timing need not be exact to the second. AWS notes that scheduled EventBridge invocations can occur within the specified minute, but not necessarily at its start. Healthchecks.io’s example allows a grace period before declaring a check failed, and Better Stack exposes expected frequency and grace-period settings. Treat examples in vendor documentation as illustrations: the right values depend on the job’s schedule, typical runtime, and operational tolerance. 5. Make delivery failures diagnosable and alerts actionable
Retries can recover transient delivery problems, but they do not make exhausted failures visible by themselves. Where the scheduler supports them, configure retry behavior and a dead-letter queue (DLQ), then monitor the relevant errors, dropped invocations, and queue. AWS EventBridge Scheduler can send failed invocation details—including invocation and target-response information—to an SQS DLQ after retries are exhausted. This gives operators evidence to investigate rather than only a missed heartbeat. AWS explains EventBridge Scheduler DLQs and retry and schedule configuration.

Route notifications according to job priority and the people responsible for recovery. Healthchecks.io documents multiple notification channels; Better Stack documents escalation settings. Scheduler-native monitoring and hosted heartbeat services address overlapping but distinct parts of the problem. Compare them against the signals and controls your operation needs rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

A practical rollout sequence
- Define completion. Identify the specific result that means the job succeeded, such as a completed backup or finished import.
- Add outcome signals. Send success only after that result is achieved; add separate start and failure reporting if supported and useful for diagnosis.
- Set timing. Match the expected interval to the schedule and allow a measured grace period for normal runtime and delivery variation.
- Observe delivery. For EventBridge Scheduler, track attempts, target errors, throttling, and dropped invocations in CloudWatch.
- Preserve exhausted failures. Configure retries and a DLQ where supported, and ensure someone monitors and investigates the resulting queue.
- Test alert ownership. Route notifications to the responsible team and set escalation appropriate to the job’s priority.
