Crocodiles vs. Alligators: How to Tell Them Apart and Where They Live

For the American alligator and American crocodile, the quickest clues are a broad, rounded snout and hidden fourth lower-jaw tooth in the alligator versus a narrower, triangular snout and visible fourth tooth in the crocodile. Their ranges and usual habitats help too, but no single cue is a guarantee. In the United States, both native species occur in south Florida.

How to tell an alligator from a crocodile

The comparison here is between two species: the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). “Alligator” and “crocodile” also name broader groups of related crocodilians; appearance and range vary among species. The National Park Service lists 23 living crocodilian species worldwide (NPS species profile, accessed 2026).

Clue American alligator American crocodile
Snout Broad and rounded Narrower and triangular
Fourth lower-jaw tooth with mouth closed Usually hidden in a socket Visible
Typical coloration Often darker Often lighter gray-green
Usual habitat and range Freshwater wetlands across the southeastern United States; can also tolerate some brackish water Coastal and brackish or saltwater habitats; south Florida and a wider range through parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America

Use several clues together. Snout shape varies somewhat among alligators, while color and habitat are patterns rather than definitive tests. The National Park Service describes the crocodile’s tooth clue this way: “Their narrow snout is triangular in shape, and the fourth tooth on both sides of the lower jaw is visible when the mouth is closed.” (NPS, American Crocodile: Species Profile.)

Where American alligators and crocodiles live

American alligator: southeastern United States

American alligators range across the southeastern United States. They primarily inhabit freshwater swamps, marshes, rivers, lakes, and smaller bodies of water. They can tolerate some salinity for limited periods and sometimes occur in brackish mangrove areas, so brackish water alone does not rule out an alligator. See the National Park Service alligator profile.

American crocodile: coastal tropics and south Florida

American crocodiles live in coastal south Florida, at the northern edge of their range, and across parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The NPS profile describes their range from Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola through both coasts of southern Mexico and Central America, extending south to Ecuador on the Pacific side and Venezuela on the Atlantic side. They are associated with coastal, brackish, and saltwater habitats.

Where their ranges overlap

South Florida is the only region in the United States where these two native species coexist, according to the National Park Service. That overlap is why location can help but cannot settle an identification by itself.

Observe crocodilians safely

Do not approach an animal to inspect its snout or teeth. National Park Service visitor guidance says: “stay back 20′, don’t feed or touch, if it moves = you are too close” (Everglades National Park visitor FAQ). Observe from a safe distance and follow posted park instructions.
