For smoother Crimson Desert gameplay, tune lighting quality, internal render resolution and upscaling before switching ray tracing off. Start with the Cinematic preset, use Cinematic or Ultra lighting, select the highest native or upscaled render resolution your GPU can sustain, and test DLSS 4.0 before DLSS 4.5 on compatible NVIDIA hardware. Add ray reconstruction or frame generation only after the base frame rate is stable, because both can introduce costs or artifacts.
The settings that matter most
Crimson Desert’s frame rate and image stability are controlled by several interacting options rather than one universal “FPS” switch. Lighting tier, internal render resolution, upscaler version and ray-reconstruction mode have the largest practical effect on the balance between clarity, noise and performance. A lower internal resolution can reduce the number of samples used for lighting, so a nominally faster Performance mode may look noisier or blurrier than expected.

Use this order when tuning a PC:
- Choose a preset close to your target, normally Cinematic.
- Set Lighting Quality to Cinematic or Ultra; avoid Max until you have substantial GPU headroom.
- Raise internal render resolution or move to a higher-quality upscaling mode until frame times become too high.
- On NVIDIA hardware, compare DLSS 4.0 with DLSS 4.5 and keep the cleaner result in your build.
- On AMD hardware, test FSR 3 or FSR 4 in the quality mode that holds your target frame rate.
- Leave ray tracing enabled for the first comparison, then test reconstruction and frame generation separately.
These steps preserve the settings that most affect lighting quality instead of sacrificing image quality for a small, uncertain gain.

Crimson Desert has no built-in benchmark tool. DSOGaming editor John Papadopoulos described it directly: “Crimson Desert does not have a built-in benchmark tool.” Published results therefore depend on the scene, patch, driver, resolution, processor and graphics card.

Use the same demanding scenes
Make each comparison in the same outdoor traversal route, a busy settlement and an interior with complex lighting. Let shader compilation and asset streaming settle, then record average FPS and frame-time consistency. A high average with frequent spikes will feel worse than a slightly lower average with even frame pacing.
Change one variable at a time
Keep the preset, resolution, field of view and other options fixed while testing one setting. Write down the GPU, CPU, driver, display resolution, upscaler mode and game version. Repeat a change if a weather effect, camera angle or streaming event alters the result. The cited PC measurements are test-system-specific, not guarantees for every computer.
Recommended PC tuning ladder
1. Start at Cinematic, then adjust lighting
Use Cinematic as the baseline. Set Lighting Quality to Cinematic or Ultra when shadow flicker, shimmering or noisy indirect light is distracting. TechSpot found these tiers reduced flicker and noise more effectively than simply lowering the overall preset. Max lighting can be expensive and may be imposed automatically by ray-reconstruction features, so leave it off unless your GPU has ample headroom.
2. Protect internal render resolution
Use native resolution when your system can maintain the desired frame rate. Otherwise choose the highest-quality upscaling mode that does so. Crimson Desert’s lighting sample count follows internal render resolution: aggressive Performance modes lower that resolution and can make lighting noise and softness more visible even when the output resolution shown by the game remains unchanged.

- Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Take on the role of the Greymane Kliff and embark on a journey across the continent to reclaim everything youve lost. Explore uncharted lands, encounter mysterious factions, and experience firsthand a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless.
3. Select the upscaler version deliberately
On NVIDIA hardware, test DLSS 4.0 first. TechSpot and DSOGaming both reported cleaner or less flickery output from DLSS 4.0 than DLSS 4.5 in their tested builds. This is a build-specific observation, not a permanent rule for every driver or patch, so inspect foliage, thin geometry, moving shadows and signs while rotating the camera.
On AMD hardware, the game officially supports FSR 3 and FSR 4. TechSpot reported that FSR 4 performed well on AMD GPUs. Select Quality or another mode that keeps your target frame rate; dropping directly to the most aggressive Performance mode can expose the lighting-resolution trade-off described above.
4. Compare ray tracing before disabling it
Leave ray tracing on during the first pass. DSOGaming measured an approximately 3–4 FPS difference between its ray-tracing tests, while lighting tier and reconstruction settings could have larger visual or performance effects. Ultra and Cinematic presets automatically enable ray tracing in the tested version, so disabling RT is not the first universal tweak. Turn it off only after measuring your own scenes and deciding that the recovered frame time is worth the lighting change.
5. Treat ray reconstruction as an experiment
Ray reconstruction can improve denoising, but it can also force Lighting Quality to Max and behave like a hidden extreme preset. That combination may cost more than expected. TechSpot also observed artifacts in its tested build, including rain disappearing with ray reconstruction or ray regeneration enabled. Toggle the feature while watching rain, smoke, foliage, hair and fine shadows; keep it enabled only if the cleaner denoising outweighs the extra cost and any defects.

6. Add frame generation after the base rate is healthy
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames, but it does not make a weak base render rate responsive. First stabilize native or upscaled rendering and frame times, then enable DLSS or FSR frame generation. DSOGaming saw artifacts during fast camera movement, so pan quickly through foliage, combat and settlement crowds before accepting the setting. If ghosting or warped objects appear, disable frame generation or return to a higher-quality base mode.
The in-game preview is useful for this process. TechRadar reports that DLSS and FSR frame-generation options can be toggled without restarting, allowing a direct before-and-after check in the same scene.
Practical PC profiles
Use these as starting points rather than fixed presets. The target is consistent frame time at the highest internal resolution your hardware can sustain.
| Profile | Internal resolution and upscaling | Lighting | Ray tracing and reconstruction | Frame generation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image-quality baseline | Native resolution or the highest-quality mode that holds your target | Cinematic or Ultra | RT on initially; reconstruction only after testing | Off while establishing base performance | Clear lighting and stable image for comparison |
| Balanced PC | Quality upscaling; reduce one step only when frame times demand it | Cinematic | RT on unless your measured scenes show a worthwhile loss | Optional after base rate is stable | General play on a mid-to-high-range GPU |
| Performance-focused | Balanced or Performance upscaling, as high as your target allows | Cinematic first; lower only if necessary | Test RT off after measuring; avoid automatic Max reconstruction cost | Use only after checking camera-motion artifacts | Holding a strict frame-rate target |
The table’s “quality” and “performance” labels describe priorities, not guaranteed FPS values. A quality profile keeps native or high-quality rendering and stronger lighting; a performance profile lowers render resolution and lighting only as far as required.

How to fix common visual and performance problems
Shadow flicker or noisy lighting
- Raise Lighting Quality to Cinematic or Ultra.
- Move from Performance upscaling to Balanced or Quality if the GPU can sustain it.
- Compare DLSS 4.0 with DLSS 4.5; keep the version with less shimmer in your game build.
- Test ray reconstruction separately. It may denoise the image, but check for rain and other disappearing effects.
Low FPS after enabling reconstruction
- Check whether reconstruction forced Lighting Quality to Max.
- Return lighting to Cinematic or Ultra if the game permits it.
- Disable reconstruction and compare frame times in the same route before changing several other settings.
Stutter despite a high average FPS
- Use the same traversal, settlement and indoor scenes to identify streaming-specific spikes.
- Prefer a mode with steadier frame times over a higher but erratic average.
- Disable frame generation while diagnosing the base render rate, then test it again after frame pacing is stable.
Ghosting or warped objects during camera movement
- Inspect fast pans with frame generation enabled.
- If artifacts remain, disable frame generation and keep the higher-quality base upscaling mode.
- Compare DLSS versions or FSR quality modes before lowering internal resolution further.
What published PC results actually show
TechRadar measured around 70 FPS at native 3440×1440 on the Cinematic preset without upscaling using an RTX 4080 Super and Ryzen 7 5700X3D test system. That result describes that hardware, resolution, preset and test date; it is not a universal expectation for every RTX 4080 Super system.
On a Lenovo Legion Go S with a Z1 Extreme processor, TechRadar reported approximately 30–40 FPS at Medium with FSR 3.1 Balanced. Portable systems can vary with power limits, temperature and display resolution, so use the same scene-based method rather than copying the number as a target.
No official universal FPS promise has been established. Treat every published figure as a measured result tied to its stated test system and settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest console performance settings
On consoles, select the mode that matches your display and responsiveness preference. MeriStation reports that PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X offer a Performance target around 60 FPS. Xbox Series S targets around 40 FPS in Performance mode. On standard consoles, Balanced targets about 40 FPS and Quality about 30 FPS.
| Mode | Reported target | Priority | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | About 60 FPS on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X; about 40 FPS on Series S | Responsiveness and lower latency | You value smooth controls and your display supports the mode |
| Balanced | About 40 FPS on standard consoles | Middle ground between resolution and speed | You want more image quality than Performance without a 30-FPS target |
| Quality | About 30 FPS on standard consoles | Resolution and visual fidelity | You prefer the clearest image and can accept slower response |
| PS5 Pro quality option | Native 4K at 30 FPS, with PSSR support | Maximum stated resolution option | You have a 4K display and prioritize resolution over frame rate |
Variable refresh rate (VRR) does not raise the console’s target, but a compatible display can make frame-rate oscillation less noticeable. Enable VRR on both the console and television or monitor, then choose Performance, Balanced or Quality according to the response-versus-resolution trade-off you can see and feel.
A simple decision framework
- Set your target. Decide whether you are aiming for roughly 60, 40 or 30 FPS, or for the highest stable rate your monitor can show.
- Preserve resolution first. Start native, then use the highest-quality upscaling mode that reaches the target.
- Use lighting tiers strategically. Keep Cinematic or Ultra for cleaner shadows; lower lighting only when frame-time measurements require it.
- Test versions, not assumptions. Compare DLSS 4.0 and 4.5 on NVIDIA hardware, or FSR 3 and 4 on supported AMD hardware, in the same moving scene.
- Isolate expensive features. Measure ray tracing, reconstruction and frame generation one at a time.
- Keep the profile that feels consistent. Favor even frame times and artifact-free motion over a larger average number.
This approach avoids chasing a setting that improves a menu number while making lighting, motion or responsiveness worse in the scenes you actually play.
