What the reported Game Pass removal means
Game Pass access is a subscription entitlement, not ownership of the game. When that entitlement ends, the game can remain installed but will normally require a purchase before it will launch again through the Xbox ecosystem. The reported October 15, 2026 date should be treated as a community-reported date, not a confirmed Microsoft schedule. Microsoft can change the date, time or regional availability, so verify the notice shown in the Xbox app for your account.

For an Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase
Buying the edition in the same Xbox ecosystem is the safest option for an existing Game Pass save. Cloud-save support is advertised for the Xbox edition, so the purchased entitlement should see the save associated with the same Microsoft account. Xbox Play Anywhere also indicates support for the Xbox ecosystem across the compatible Xbox and Windows devices covered by that license.
Keep the account constant. A purchase made on a different Microsoft account, a different Xbox profile or a newly created Windows profile may not expose the save you expect. Before the subscription ends, launch the game while online and allow it to reach the main menu so the latest progress has time to synchronize. Do not uninstall simply because the Game Pass badge changes; uninstalling is unnecessary for a normal entitlement change and removes a useful local copy while you are checking continuity.
A practical continuity checklist
- Open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and confirm that you are signed in with the Xbox account that played the Game Pass version.
- Open the game’s store page and purchase the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition, checking that the edition is for the same account and region.
- Launch the game from that account after the purchase. If prompted to choose between local and cloud data, select the newer timestamp you recognize rather than guessing.
- Confirm that your current save appears before changing accounts, reinstalling Windows or moving to another platform.
- Make a short test save, exit normally and relaunch to verify that the new progress returns.
These steps reduce account and synchronization mistakes; they cannot repair a save that was already damaged or deleted. If your latest progress is missing, stay online, close and reopen the Xbox app, verify the account shown in the profile menu, and launch again. Avoid creating a replacement profile or repeatedly overwriting files until you have checked the correct account.

Achievements belong to the Xbox account, not to the temporary subscription. The Xbox listing advertises Xbox achievements, so buying the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition with the same Xbox profile keeps you in that achievement system. Achievements you already unlocked should remain attached to that profile, and future unlocks will continue to use Xbox’s achievement service once the purchased edition is running.
Do not expect a second copy of an achievement merely because you changed from Game Pass access to ownership. The entitlement changes; the account identity does not. As with saves, an account mismatch can make progress appear absent even though it exists on the original profile.
Xbox/Microsoft Store versus Steam
Steam is not another license for the Xbox save. Its store listing documents Steam Cloud and Steam Achievements, which are separate services from Xbox cloud saves and Xbox achievements. Use the following comparison when deciding where to buy.

The practical choice is straightforward: buy on Xbox/Microsoft Store if preserving the current Xbox save and achievement history matters most. Choose Steam when you specifically want a Steam library license and accept that you may need to begin again or manually test whether any progress is recognized.

Can you transfer a Game Pass save to Steam?
There is no documented, universal Xbox-to-Steam migration guarantee for this game. Steam Cloud stores data for the Steam installation, while Xbox cloud saves belong to the Xbox ecosystem. Community discussions report that some transfers may work partially, while others fail to bring over saves or achievements. Those reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as a supported feature.
Buying the Steam edition therefore should be considered a separate-platform move. Do not purchase it on the assumption that your current mission progress, settings or achievement history will appear automatically. Even if a save file can be located or recognized, Xbox achievements are not the same records as Steam Achievements; an Xbox unlock should not be expected to trigger a Steam unlock.

If you decide to test Steam, keep the Xbox installation and account intact until the Steam version has been launched and checked. That preserves your original continuity option. Avoid deleting the Xbox version or changing Microsoft accounts before you know whether the Steam copy meets your needs.

A purchase converts your access from a subscription-based entitlement to a paid entitlement for that Xbox/Microsoft Store edition. You still need to sign in to the purchasing account, but you no longer depend on the game remaining in the Game Pass catalog. The Xbox listing also describes cloud play through Game Pass while stating that the game must be purchased for that access path; catalog availability and cloud-play terms can change, so read the current listing at checkout.

Prices, sales and regional editions are not fixed figures. Compare the edition name and account shown at checkout rather than relying on an old promotion or a price quoted elsewhere.
Act 2, new missions and platform timing
TrueAchievements reported on March 26, 2026 that Act 2 would add five new missions and additional Xbox achievements. The report described the update as free for owners and Game Pass players, said the Steam launch came first, and indicated that the Xbox release would follow. It did not establish one universal release date for every region or platform.
Before assuming Act 2 is available, check the current Xbox listing, the game’s in-game update information or the Steam news panel for your platform. A staggered rollout means one platform or region can show the update while another is still waiting. If you buy to continue a Game Pass save, the update entitlement follows the edition and platform you purchased; it does not turn a Steam license into an Xbox license.
Troubleshooting missing saves after purchase
The game starts with no save
- Confirm that the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and game are all using the original Xbox/Microsoft account.
- Connect to the internet, fully quit the game, restart the Xbox app and launch again so cloud synchronization can complete.
- Check whether the game is showing a different Windows or Xbox profile than the one used for Game Pass.
- Do not create a new campaign and overwrite existing data while you are still checking the account and synchronization status.
Achievements look incomplete
Check the Xbox achievement page for the original profile. Changing from subscription access to ownership should not create a new Xbox profile, but signing into a different account can make the history look empty. Steam achievements will not serve as a mirror of the Xbox list.
You bought the wrong platform
An Xbox/Microsoft Store purchase and a Steam purchase are separate licenses. Contact the store that processed the transaction promptly about its current refund rules, and do not assume that buying the other edition will merge licenses, saves or achievements.
Which version should you buy?
Buy Xbox/Microsoft Store when continuity is the priority
- Your current progress was made through Xbox or PC Game Pass using an Xbox account.
- You want Xbox achievements to remain on the same profile.
- You want the Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox cloud-save features advertised on the listing.
- You prefer the platform-matched option with the least uncertainty.
Buy Steam when a separate Steam library is the priority
- You want ownership tied to Steam rather than Xbox.
- You accept that Xbox saves and achievements may not transfer.
- You are prepared for a separate save system and potentially a fresh achievement run.
- You are comfortable checking update timing independently from the Xbox release.
For most players worried about losing a Game Pass campaign, the same-account Xbox/Microsoft Store purchase is the defensible decision. Steam can be a good platform choice for a new or independent playthrough, but it is not the documented preservation route for Xbox progress.
