Laboratory testing has confirmed creosote in pollution found at Blyth South Beach in Northumberland. Northumberland County Council says restrictions remain in place on the affected area near the Hole in the Wall, and advises people not to enter it or bathe in the affected section north of the Dave Stephens Centre. Check the council’s latest update and beach signs before visiting, as advice may change.
Where the pollution has been found
The Environment Agency’s investigation found pollution in a specific area of the beach near the Hole in the Wall. It is seeping into the sand through contaminated groundwater. The council’s 5 October 2026 update confirms that laboratory testing identified the substance as creosote.

The finding applies to the affected area; it does not establish that all of Blyth South Beach is contaminated. The council’s 20 August 2026 update said initial water samples indicated the bathing-water site south of the Dave Stephens Centre was unaffected at that time. That earlier result is not a current guarantee, and visitors should follow the latest advice and on-site signs.

What authorities say about the likely source
The council says investigations indicate the likely source is a former timber treatment works on land beside the affected beach. The works operated until approximately 1980, and historical records suggest creosote was used in its treatment process. This remains a likely source under investigation, not a definitive final attribution.

- Indoor air laboratory testing: SimpleLab's indoor air quality monitor test for 25 volatile organic compounds or VOCs. This test is intended for 1 single sample in any indoor location where VOC levels are expected to be low.
- Contaminants tested: VOCs in indoor air quality. This at-home air lab test is for you if: you're unsure if the air in your home, bathroom, basement, office, or any indoor space, is safe.
- What are VOCs: VOCs are chemicals that easily turn into gases and can be found in the air we breathe indoors. They come from everyday items like paints, cleaning products, furniture, and even air fresheners. Testing for VOCs helps make sure the air in your home or workplace is safe and healthy to breathe.
- When to test: If you're having persistent health symptoms like skin irritation and/or respiratory problems, after a renovation where materials like paint or glue were applied, in places where chemicals or cleaning agents are constantly used.
- Everything you need to test: This mail-to-lab test kit includes all sampling materials, prepaid return shipping, lab testing, and digital report-back.
What beach users should do
Northumberland County Council describes the public health risk as low, but advises people to avoid contact with water in the affected area and not to touch anything, including wildlife, along the affected shoreline. Keep dogs away from the affected beach and water. Contact with the material or water may cause eye or skin irritation. If you have been exposed to the water and feel unwell, seek medical advice.
The restrictions and advice against bathing apply to the affected section, not automatically to every part of the beach. Check current council guidance and posted signs to establish what is open and where bathing is advised against.

What is being monitored and investigated
The Environment Agency has begun regular seawater testing along Blyth South Beach. The first sample in this programme was collected during the week before the council’s 5 October update. The council says the results will inform water-quality monitoring and future decisions about bathing advice and access restrictions; it did not publish numerical results for that first sampling programme in the update.

What is not yet known
The council’s 5 October update did not give a clean-up start or completion date, a selected remediation method, the quantity of creosote, or an incident-specific numerical health-risk estimate. The council’s “low” risk description is qualitative and applies to its advice about this incident; it is not a numerical estimate or a general assessment of creosote exposure.

How the incident has developed
- Earlier in 2026: The Environment Agency responded to reports of oil-like pollution and a fuel smell. The council says officers did not find evidence of beach pollution during those earlier responses.
- 20 August 2026: The council reported preliminary sample analysis suggesting creosote contamination and described precautionary access and bathing restrictions in the affected area north of the Dave Stephens Centre.
- 5 October 2026: The council reported laboratory confirmation of creosote, the likely historic source, continuing restrictions, regular seawater testing, and ongoing investigation and clean-up planning. It also said weatherproof signage was planned.
