The useful functions on a credit-card multitool are the boring ones: a bottle opener, a controlled package opener, a correctly sized screwdriver, common-size wrenches and a readable ruler. A pry edge, hex-bit holder or bicycle spoke wrench can earn its space for a particular hobby. Saws, knife edges, protractors, compasses and impressive-sounding tool counts are much more situational because a thin card cannot match the reach, grip or leverage of a full-size tool.
Think of a card multitool as emergency convenience equipment, not a replacement toolbox. It can solve a loose screw, open packaging, tighten a small fastener or measure a gap when you are away from your normal tools. Its value depends less on the number printed on the package than on whether its actual openings and driver tips fit the jobs you encounter.

What a credit-card multitool is designed to do
A credit-card multitool is a flat piece of steel, usually shaped to fit a wallet sleeve or pocket carrier, with cutouts and formed edges that act as small tools. The card format saves bulk, but that compactness creates hard limits. You have little room for a comfortable handle, long shaft, deep wrench jaw or high-torque grip. Most functions are therefore intended for light-duty work: turning a small screw, opening a bottle, cutting tape, checking a short dimension or making a minor adjustment.

The functions most likely to justify wallet space
Bottle opener
A bottle opener is the clearest everyday win. A rigid card edge gives you a stable fulcrum, and the task requires little reach or torque. Check that the opening is easy to identify and that using it will not expose another sharp edge against your hand. If you frequently attend picnics, travel or work away from a kitchen drawer, this single function can make a thin card worthwhile.
Package and box opener
A recessed or controlled package opener is useful for tape, envelopes and light cardboard. It is safer and more predictable than using an exposed knife edge for routine deliveries. Look for a cutting surface that is shielded by the card body when stored, and use short strokes away from your fingers. A package opener is not a substitute for a utility knife on thick strapping, heavy plastic or dense material.
Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
A screwdriver is valuable when the tip actually matches the fastener. Common jobs include tightening a loose switch-plate screw, replacing a battery cover, adjusting a small bracket or securing a cabinet hinge. A flathead tip can sometimes turn a range of slotted screws, while a Phillips driver needs the correct size and geometry to avoid cam-out. A broad, blunt marking that merely resembles a Phillips cross is less useful than a properly formed tip.
Before buying, inspect photographs or a specification drawing for the driver location and shape. Some cards use the outer edge as a flathead; others provide a dedicated driver point. Test with light pressure first. If the tip does not seat fully, stop rather than forcing it: slipping can damage the screw and cut your hand.
Common-size wrenches
Wrenches earn their space when an opening fits the fastener completely. They can handle light tightening or loosening on small nuts and bolts, such as a bicycle accessory, furniture hardware or a loose appliance bracket. A wrench that is slightly too large rounds corners; one that is too small will not engage. Broad, useful size coverage matters more than a high count made up of obscure sizes.
Check both measurement systems if you work on mixed hardware. A metric opening and a nearby inch opening can look almost interchangeable while damaging a fastener under load. Keep the card square to the nut and apply only modest force. The thin body offers little hand comfort and can bend or slip when a fastener is seized.

Ruler
A ruler is a genuinely practical measuring aid for small objects, spacing and quick layout. Metric and inch scales are useful when assembling furniture, checking a parcel, marking a cut or estimating clearance. Readability matters: shallow engraving, crowded markings or a ruler interrupted by large cutouts reduces real-world usefulness. A ruler on a card is for short measurements, not precision fabrication or long stock.
Pry edge and nail puller
A pry edge can lift a light lid, separate a small seam or start a tack. A nail-puller notch adds a little more capability for light extraction. Leverage is limited by the card’s short length, and the broad edge can concentrate force into your fingertips. Use it only where the material and fastener are modest; do not pry against fragile electronics, glass or a load-bearing joint.
Hex-bit holder and bicycle spoke wrench
A 1/4-inch hex-bit holder is useful if you already carry compatible bits. The card supplies a compact handle, while the bit provides the working tip. Without bits, the holder is only a socket-shaped opening. A bicycle spoke wrench has strong niche value for cyclists who know their wheel’s spoke size and need an emergency adjustment. It is not a general substitute for a bicycle tool kit.
Functions that are situational rather than universal
Can opener
A card can opener may help with a conventional can in an emergency, but it is slower and less comfortable than a dedicated opener. The thin body gives you little leverage, and a mistake leaves a sharp rim. Treat it as backup equipment and keep your fingers clear of the cut path.
Knife edge and cord cutter
A knife edge can open cord, tape or light material, while a cord cutter may be shaped for a specific slicing action. These edges are useful only when you have a clear reason to carry them. Cover or recess the edge when possible, and check local transport, workplace and venue rules before carrying a card with a blade-like feature. Never assume that a small edge is exempt from a restriction that applies to knives.
Saw
A short saw blade can score soft wood, plastic or cord, but its limited stroke and shallow grip make it inefficient for serious cutting. It may be justified for camping or a narrowly defined emergency kit. For ordinary household use, a package opener and screwdriver usually provide more frequent value.

Protractor, speed square and circle template
Geometry markings can help with a quick angle, a perpendicular line or a repeated circle. They are convenient for sketching and small layout tasks, but they do not replace a full-size square, adjustable protractor or drafting template. Their usefulness depends on whether your work actually involves those measurements.
Compass or direction finder
A direction-finding feature is a specialized aid. It can be helpful for a short outdoor activity when properly calibrated and used away from magnetic interference, but it should not be treated as navigation equipment without confirming its accuracy. A phone or dedicated compass is generally easier to read and verify.
Phone-stand slot
A slot that props up a phone is a comfort feature rather than a repair tool. It can be handy at a desk, on a train or in a hotel room, provided the phone fits securely and the card sits on a stable surface. Do not balance a phone over an edge or near liquids simply because the slot is available.

The numbers in this table should not be read as a ranking. For example, eight metric and eight inch wrenches may be more useful to you than twenty openings if they cover the fasteners you encounter. Conversely, a cyclist may value spoke wrenches more than a larger general-purpose count.
How to compare a card before buying
1. Match the wrench openings to your hardware
Write down the sizes you actually use on bicycles, furniture, appliances or work equipment. Compare the exact metric and imperial dimensions, not just the number of openings. If the manufacturer does not publish a dimension, treat that opening as unverified until you can inspect a detailed drawing or the physical card.

2. Inspect driver type and tip geometry
Confirm whether the card has Phillips, flathead or both, and whether the tip is shaped to seat in the screw head. A driver that works only as a broad slot may not turn recessed or small screws. A 1/4-inch hex holder is valuable only when your bits fit and there is enough clearance to rotate them.

3. Check steel, thickness and edge finish
Stainless grades such as 304 or 420 describe the material family, not a guaranteed torque rating. Thickness affects stiffness and hand comfort. Examine whether working edges are smooth, rounded or exposed. Sharp manufacturing burrs can be uncomfortable even when the tool itself is not intended to cut.
4. Evaluate carry and storage
A card that bends, catches on wallet contents or exposes a blade may be carried less often than a slightly thicker card with a sleeve. Check the supplied wallet carrier or lanyard option, the card’s finished dimensions and whether the design keeps sharp edges away from payment cards and skin. A tool left at home has no emergency value.
5. Count tasks, not marketing claims
List five tasks you realistically face in a month. Give priority to functions that solve several of them safely: a bottle opener, package opener, screwdriver, ruler or correctly sized wrench. Treat a protractor, saw or compass as a bonus unless your activities specifically require it.

- Use two hands when possible: one stabilizes the card while the other applies controlled force.
- Keep fingers behind cutting edges and away from the path of a slipping driver or opener.
- Apply light force first. If a fastener is seized, switch to a full-size tool rather than bending the card.
- Seat a wrench fully on the flats of a nut; do not load a corner or use an almost-fitting size.
- Do not use a card as an electrical probe, pry it against glass, or place it across a live circuit.
- Clean adhesive and moisture after use, then dry the card to reduce corrosion and wallet damage.
- Store knife, saw and cord-cutting edges in their intended sleeve and check the rules where you work, travel or attend events.
Where the format reaches its limits
A card multitool cannot provide the reach of a screwdriver shaft, the grip of pliers, the leverage of a normal wrench or the controlled cutting action of a handled knife. Its short edges also make awkward angles difficult. Even when the steel is strong, your hand may slip before the card reaches a useful torque level. Manufacturer pages describe materials and layouts, but they do not establish independent durability, torque or failure testing for these products.

Keep a conventional screwdriver, pliers and proper wrenches for maintenance that involves seized fasteners, high loads, deep recesses or delicate surfaces. The card is a bridge until you can reach the right tool, not permission to force a job beyond its design.

Choosing by activity
Office, commuting and travel
Prioritize a bottle opener, package opener, Phillips and flathead driver, ruler and a safe carry sleeve. A phone stand can be useful during travel. Avoid unnecessary blade features if your workplace or transport rules are strict.
Home and apartment repairs
Prioritize the exact wrench sizes used on furniture and appliances, plus a properly formed screwdriver. A pry edge helps with light lids and trim, but keep full-size tools available for anything requiring leverage.
Cycling
Check spoke-wrench sizes and the common fasteners on your bicycle before buying. A hex-bit holder adds value if you carry compatible bits. The card should supplement, not replace, a pump, tire equipment and a proper multitool for roadside repairs.

A can opener, bottle opener, package edge and saw may matter more outdoors than at a desk. Verify blade restrictions and practice the opening technique before relying on it. A card compass should be considered a convenience aid, not your sole navigation method.
A practical verdict
For most people, the best wallet multitool is the one with a comfortable carry method, a readable ruler, a bottle or package opener, a driver that fits the screws around you and wrench openings that match your hardware. A card with fewer advertised tools can be the better choice when those functions are well formed and safely stored. Choose specialized cutouts only when a real activity—cycling, camping, drafting or frequent package handling—makes them worth the space.
