It combines adjustable bone-conduction transducers, Bluetooth 5.3, two-device multipoint and a manufacturer-rated 10-hour battery. The decisive compromise is music quality: Consumer Reports describes the sound as mediocre, with subdued bass and a somewhat telephone-like presentation. Choose it for awareness and convenience, not for rich, isolated music playback.
What the Creative Outlier Free+ is
The Outlier Free+ is a bone-conduction headset. Instead of sealing the ear canal with an earbud or covering the ear with a cup, its transducers sit against the area in front of the ears and send vibrations through the bones to the inner ear. Your ear openings remain uncovered.

That design targets a specific use case: listening while retaining access to nearby sounds. You can hear traffic, announcements, colleagues or other activity without removing an earpiece. Open ears can be useful for running, walking, commuting and office work, but they are not a safety system. You still need to control volume, follow local traffic rules and stay alert.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is also the kind of design some listeners investigate when conventional in-ear or over-ear products feel intrusive. Leaving the canal uncovered may be preferable if you dislike inserting earbuds or blocking the room, but the Free+ is not a medical device and the available product information does not establish that it will solve a particular ear-sensitivity problem. The practical question is whether you prefer environmental awareness and a less enclosed fit to the fuller, more isolated sound of a conventional headset.
Free+ specifications at a glance
| Feature | What is established | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Audio design | Open-ear bone conduction | Ear canals stay uncovered; outside sound remains audible. |
| Transducers | Adjustable | You can reposition the contact points for your ear shape. |
| Wireless standard | Bluetooth 5.3 | Connects as a contemporary Bluetooth headset; codec support and range testing are not established. |
| Multipoint | Up to two devices | Two devices can remain connected, but playback or calls are handled by only one at a time. |
| Water rating | IPX5 | Designed for sweat, splashes and low-pressure water jets, including light or moderate rain; not swimming or submersion. |
| Claimed playback | Up to 10 hours | Creative’s figure is a maximum manufacturer claim, not an independent runtime measurement. |
| Full charge | Two hours | Creative’s stated time for a complete charge. |
| Quick charge | Up to two hours of playback from 10 minutes | A manufacturer claim useful for a short top-up before a workout or commute. |
Those specifications describe the product’s intended role, not a guarantee that every wearer will get the same result. In particular, the 10-hour figure, charging times and fit are claims or personal variables rather than laboratory results established for this review.
Sound quality: the reason to think carefully
Consumer Reports’ product-specific assessment is clear about the Free+’s limitation for music. It characterizes the sound as mediocre, with subdued bass and an overall presentation that can sound somewhat like a telephone. That is a meaningful distinction from saying the headset is unusable: the same assessment says the shortcomings do not rule it out for dialogue and communication.

What that means for different listening
- Spoken audio: Podcasts, navigation prompts, meetings and voice calls are the strongest fit for a presentation that emphasizes intelligibility over tonal richness.
- Music with bass: Expect less impact from drums, bass guitar and electronic low frequencies than from a conventional sealed headphone. The subdued-bass criticism is the specific independent characterization available for this model.
- Busy or loud places: Because the ear is open, environmental noise competes with the headset. That can be useful for awareness but makes it harder to hear details at a safe volume.
- Private listening: Open-ear bone conduction does not provide the isolation of an in-ear seal or over-ear cup. People nearby may also hear some of your playback, depending on volume and surroundings; leakage has not been quantified.
- Background listening: The Free+ is easier to justify for a low-distraction stream while working or walking than as your only headphone for concentrated music sessions.
No independent measurement was established for frequency response, maximum output, distortion, soundstage or music volume. Do not treat the Free+ as a reference-grade music headset or infer laboratory performance from the Bluetooth version.
If you are deciding between an open-ear model and ordinary earbuds, make the comparison around priorities rather than feature count. Earbuds generally offer stronger bass and isolation, while the Free+ deliberately gives up those qualities to keep the ear open. The product is therefore a poor match for someone who wants one headset to deliver both powerful music and the least possible outside sound.
Open ears: benefits and limits
Why runners and commuters may prefer it
An uncovered ear canal lets you monitor your surroundings while audio is playing. That is the central reason to choose the Free+. It can reduce the friction of switching between a podcast and a conversation, and you do not have to repeatedly insert and remove an earbud.
For a commuter, that can mean hearing a platform announcement without pausing audio. In an office, it can make a colleague’s approach noticeable. During a walk, it preserves access to ambient sound instead of creating a sealed bubble. These are convenience benefits, not promises that every sound will remain audible.

Why awareness is not the same as protection
Hearing a nearby sound is not guaranteed in every environment. Wind, traffic, crowds and your own playback level can still mask important cues. Keep volume moderate, do not rely on the headset to detect vehicles or alarms, and stop listening when a situation demands full attention.
Open-ear listening also does not make a road, trail or workplace automatically safe. Treat awareness as one useful property of the design, alongside ordinary situational judgment. If you need to hear every detail, remove the headset rather than turning the volume up to overcome noise.
Water resistance: IPX5, not a swim rating
Creative markets the Free+ as sweatproof and splash-proof. Its explanatory footnote narrows that claim to protection from low-pressure water jets from any direction, including light or moderate rain. That makes the rating relevant to workouts and ordinary wet-weather use.
IPX5 does not establish protection against immersion. Do not use the Free+ for swimming, showering with sustained water exposure or activities in which it may be submerged. Dry it after a wet workout and keep the headset and charging equipment free of moisture before charging.
This is an important model-checking point. Creative lists the separate Outlier Free Pro+ at IPX8, but that rating belongs to the Pro+ model and should not be transferred to the Free+. If a listing promises swimming use or an IPX8 rating, verify that it actually names Outlier Free Pro+, not Outlier Free+.
Battery and charging claims
Creative claims up to 10 hours of playback, a two-hour full charge and up to two hours of playback after a 10-minute quick charge. These are manufacturer figures. No independent Free+ test established actual runtime under a defined volume, connection pattern or call workload, so treat “up to” as a best-case ceiling rather than a promise for every session.
| Charging statement | How to plan around it | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 hours playback | Potentially enough for a workday or several shorter workouts before charging. | Creative claim; not independently measured. |
| Two-hour full charge | Allow a two-hour charging window when you want a complete recharge. | Creative claim; conditions are not specified. |
| 10-minute quick charge gives up to two hours | A short top-up may cover a single activity. | Creative claim; actual result varies with use. |
Volume, calls, signal conditions and the number of connected devices can affect real-world endurance, but no Free+ test quantified those effects. Plan around the published maximum conservatively: a short quick charge may be useful before leaving, while a full recharge requires the stated two-hour window.

Bluetooth 5.3 and two-device multipoint
The headset uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports multipoint with up to two devices. Creative states that playback or calls can be accessed from only one connected device at a time. In other words, multipoint keeps two devices available; it does not mix two audio streams simultaneously.

You can leave both connected, listen from one, then use the other for a call or playback. The exact handoff behavior depends on the devices and their operating systems, so do not assume that every combination will switch automatically or instantly.
A practical connection sequence
- Charge the headset before first use so pairing is not interrupted by a low battery.
- Put the Free+ into pairing mode using its controls, then open the Bluetooth settings on the first phone, tablet or computer and select the Free+ entry.
- Finish the first connection before pairing the second device. On that device, select the Free+ from the available Bluetooth list.
- With both devices connected, start audio or answer a call on the device you want to use. If the wrong device takes the audio focus, pause playback or disconnect it temporarily before retrying.
- When troubleshooting, remove the Free+ from the saved Bluetooth lists on both devices, restart Bluetooth, and pair again one device at a time.
The exact control gestures and operating-system labels can differ by device. The established capability is the two-device limit and one-device-at-a-time audio or call handling, not a guaranteed switching behavior between every phone and computer combination.
Adjusting the headset for your ears
Because the transducers are adjustable, placement is part of setup rather than a fixed one-size position. Move them so they sit consistently against the area in front of each ear without pressing directly into the ear opening. Keep both sides symmetrical, then play a familiar voice recording at a moderate level while checking that speech is clear and the frame stays stable when you turn your head.
Do not assume that a secure position for one person proves comfort for another. The available information does not include a measured fit range, glasses compatibility, helmet compatibility or long-duration comfort score. If you feel pressure, numbness or skin irritation, stop and reposition the transducers or discontinue use.
Adjustment can also change what you hear. If speech becomes unclear, reposition the contact points before increasing volume. The goal is a consistent, comfortable placement that lets you keep the volume moderate, not simply the tightest possible fit.
Free+, Free and Free Pro+: keep the names separate
Creative sells several similarly named products. Confusing them can lead to the wrong expectations, especially about water resistance and onboard playback.

| Outlier Free+ | Bone conduction, adjustable transducers, Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint for two devices, IPX5, and up to 10 hours of claimed playback. | Do not assign it an integrated music player or an IPX8 rating. |
| Outlier Free | A related model reviewed separately by RTINGS. | Results for Outlier Free are not test results for Free+; do not transfer its comfort, sound, battery or fit conclusions. |
| Outlier Free Pro+ | Creative’s product page lists IPX8 and an 8 GB built-in player. | Those features belong to Free Pro+, not the Free+ reviewed here. |
When buying, read the full model name in the listing and product photos. A title that says only “Outlier Free” is not enough to establish which version you are getting. Check the plus sign, the stated water rating and whether an onboard player is mentioned; a mismatch is a reason to stop and verify the listing.
Who should buy the Free+
It is a sensible choice if you value
- An ear canal that remains open during exercise, commuting or work.
- Awareness of surrounding sound more than strong isolation.
- Simple two-device connectivity between, for example, a phone and a laptop.
- Dialogue, calls and spoken audio where bass impact is not central.
- Sweat and splash resistance for ordinary workouts rather than immersion.
- A quick top-up option for a short activity, accepting that the runtime is a manufacturer maximum.
Look elsewhere if you need
- Full, powerful bass or a convincing music-first presentation.
- Passive isolation or privacy in a shared space.
- A headset proven for swimming or submersion.
- Independent, measured evidence of comfort, call quality or battery life before purchase.
- An onboard music library; the 8 GB player cited for the Free Pro+ is not a Free+ feature.
- Guaranteed automatic switching between every phone, tablet and computer combination.
Price and availability
A Creative UK storefront result showed a promotional price of £59.99 and stock at the time it was captured. That is a dated, region-specific observation, not a guaranteed current price or worldwide offer. Check the store serving your country, confirm currency and taxes, and verify that the listing says Free+ rather than Free or Free Pro+.
Because promotions and inventory change, compare the current total at checkout rather than relying on an old headline price. The product’s value depends heavily on whether open-ear awareness solves a real problem for you; a discount does not change the sound-quality trade-off documented by Consumer Reports.
If you shop through Amazon, search for the exact phrase Creative Outlier Free+ headphones, then inspect the model name in the seller’s specification section and product images. Confirm that the seller is Creative or an authorized retailer when that matters to you, and check the return policy. Do not assume a similarly named accessory or replacement part is compatible unless the listing identifies the Free+.
How to decide before ordering
- Define your main audio: If it is music with deep bass, treat the Consumer Reports assessment as a warning and consider a different design. If it is speech while staying aware, Free+ is more aligned with the use case.
- Check your water scenario: Sweat, splashes and light or moderate rain fit the stated IPX5 boundary. Swimming and submersion do not.
- Count your devices: Two-device multipoint is useful for a phone plus computer, but only one device handles playback or calls at a time.
- Allow for personal fit: Adjustable transducers help positioning, yet no independent comfort or fit measurement is established.
- Set expectations for privacy: Open ears mean outside sound remains available, and some playback may be audible to people nearby.
- Plan charging: Use the 10-hour, two-hour and 10-minute figures as manufacturer planning points, not guaranteed measurements.
- Verify the model and regional offer: Confirm the plus sign in Free+, inspect the water rating, and recheck the live price and stock in your region.
Bottom line on the Creative Outlier Free+
The Outlier Free+ is a focused open-ear tool, not an all-purpose audiophile headphone. Its adjustable bone-conduction design, two-device Bluetooth 5.3 connection and IPX5 workout tolerance address practical listening situations. The trade-off is plainly documented: music is mediocre, bass is subdued and the presentation can sound telephone-like. Buy it when hearing your environment and keeping your ears open matter more than musical richness; skip it when sound fidelity, isolation or swimming protection comes first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Creative Outlier Free+ good for music?
It can play music, but Consumer Reports characterizes its sound as mediocre, with subdued bass and a somewhat telephone-like presentation. It is a better fit for spoken audio and communication than for bass-heavy, music-first listening.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I hear traffic and other people while wearing it?
The open-ear bone-conduction design leaves the ear canals uncovered, so nearby sound remains available. Wind, crowds and your playback level can still mask important cues, so the headset is not a safety system.

Is the Outlier Free+ safe for swimming?
No. Its IPX5 rating covers sweat, splashes and low-pressure water jets, including light or moderate rain. It does not establish protection for immersion or swimming. The separate Outlier Free Pro+ is the model Creative lists with IPX8.
How long does the Free+ battery last?
Creative claims up to 10 hours of playback, a two-hour full charge and up to two hours of playback from a 10-minute quick charge. These are manufacturer figures, not independent runtime measurements.
Can the Free+ connect to two devices?
Yes. Bluetooth multipoint supports up to two connected devices. Playback or calls are handled by only one device at a time, and switching behavior can vary by phone, tablet or computer.

Does the Free+ include built-in storage for music?
No built-in player has been established for the Free+. Creative lists an 8 GB player for the distinct Outlier Free Pro+, so do not treat that feature as part of the Free+.
Will the adjustable transducers fit everyone comfortably?
Adjustability lets you reposition the contact points, but there is no independent measurement of fit range, glasses or helmet compatibility, or long-session comfort. Fit and pressure remain individual variables.
What should I verify when buying online?
Confirm the full name is Outlier Free+, not Outlier Free or Outlier Free Pro+. Check the stated IPX5 rating, current regional price and stock, seller details and return terms. A dated £59.99 UK promotional price is not a universal current offer.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Creative Outlier Free+ for open-ear awareness, spoken audio and exercise convenience, not for deep bass, isolation or swimming. Its key specifications are useful, but its 10-hour battery and charging figures are manufacturer claims and its music quality is the documented compromise.
