ChatGPT can help automate parts of creative work—brainstorming, outlining, drafting, editing, summarizing, and developing image concepts—but it works best as an assistant inside a repeatable process, not as an unattended creative department. Give it context and constraints, ask for a draft, revise against specific criteria, then verify the result before using it.
For recurring work, choose the right place to keep that context: a regular chat for a one-off task, a Project for work that continues across sessions, or a custom GPT for a specialized task you repeat. For images, describe the purpose, subject, action, setting, and style, then refine with focused follow-up instructions. Access and interface details vary by plan, account, workspace settings, platform, and rollout.
What creative work can ChatGPT help automate?
ChatGPT can support several stages of a creative workflow: generating ideas, organizing a brief, drafting content, rewriting for a different audience or channel, proofreading, translation, summarizing reference material, and suggesting visual concepts. OpenAI’s business guidance describes using AI for first drafts, polishing, proofreading, translation, and adaptation to different audiences or channels. That makes ChatGPT useful for moving from a blank page to a reviewable draft; it does not make the draft automatically accurate, on-brand, original, legally usable, or ready to publish.
Think of “automation” as reducing repeated setup and production work. You still decide what the work is for, supply the necessary context, select among options, and take responsibility for the final text or asset. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal time-saving percentage or guarantee of quality.

A repeatable workflow for creative work
- Define the brief. State the audience, purpose, format, channel, desired outcome, and constraints. For a product announcement, for example, specify who it is for, what changed, the call to action, the length, and claims that must not be made.
- Provide relevant context. Paste or attach the brief, writing guidance, approved facts, examples, or other reference material that the task needs. OpenAI’s business guidance specifically discusses uploading writing guidance or strong examples to establish a style guide. Give only context relevant to the task and ensure you are allowed to share it.
- Ask for a plan before a polished draft when structure matters. Request an outline, options, or a short list of questions first. Correct the direction before asking for a full version; this is usually easier than repairing a complete draft built on a mistaken assumption.
- Generate a first version with explicit boundaries. Specify what to include and exclude, the voice, the format, and any required terminology. Ask it to flag gaps rather than fill them with invented details.
- Revise against concrete criteria. Ask for a targeted change—such as a shorter opening, a warmer tone, clearer transitions, or an adaptation for a specific channel—rather than simply “make it better.” If a revision changes facts or meaning, compare it with the approved source.
- Review before use. Check facts, names, numbers, tone, audience suitability, image details, rights, and compliance with your brief. Keep a person accountable for the final decision.
A useful starter prompt
Adapt this prompt to your task and replace the bracketed details with real information:
“Help me create a [format] for [audience] whose purpose is [purpose]. Use the reference material below as the source of truth. Follow this voice: [specific traits]. Include [required points]; avoid [prohibited claims or content]. First give me a short outline and list any missing information. Do not invent facts. Reference material: [paste or attach material].”
Once you approve the direction, ask for the draft. For revisions, name the exact passage or criterion to change and what must remain unchanged.
Choose where to keep instructions and context
The right ChatGPT setup depends on how often the work recurs, whether context needs to persist, and whether the task requires specialized behavior. Projects and custom GPTs are not interchangeable: one organizes ongoing work; the other packages a task’s instructions and reference knowledge for reuse.

| Option | Best fit | What it keeps or configures | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular chat | A quick, self-contained task | The instructions and materials provided in that conversation | Useful for testing a prompt or completing a one-off draft; do not assume it has all the context from another conversation. |
| Project | Work that continues across sessions | Related chats, files, and project instructions together | Useful when recurring work needs a shared context. Project availability and limits depend on plan and workspace availability. |
| Custom GPT | A specialized task repeated with consistent behavior | Focused instructions and reference knowledge | Configure it for a defined job, then test its behavior in Preview. Creation and other availability details can vary. |
Use a Project for ongoing work
A Project is a practical home for a continuing campaign, editorial series, or other body of work: keep its chats, files, and instructions together rather than rebuilding context in each exchange. OpenAI’s Project guidance also describes using projects in ChatGPT. Exact features, limits, and access can change, so check the current Help Center documentation for your account and workspace before relying on a particular capability.
Use a custom GPT for a repeated, narrow task
If you repeatedly ask for the same kind of output, create a custom GPT with focused instructions and reference material, then test it in Preview. A narrowly defined assistant—such as one that turns approved notes into a consistent set of social captions—is easier to evaluate than a general instruction to “do all marketing.” Try representative inputs, including incomplete or unusual ones, and refine the instructions when the behavior misses a requirement. Availability of creation, sharing, and related features depends on plan and workspace settings.
How to keep ChatGPT closer to your brand
“Sound like us” is too vague to serve as a reliable style guide. Translate the brand voice into observable choices, provide examples you have permission to use, and tell ChatGPT which source takes precedence when material conflicts.
- Describe the voice in practical terms: for example, direct and warm, with short sentences and no exaggerated claims.
- Include examples: provide approved writing and, when useful, a contrasting example with a brief explanation of what is wrong with it.
- Set firm boundaries: list prohibited phrases, unsupported claims, required terminology, and any rules for calls to action.
- Identify the source of truth: tell it to use supplied product facts, policy, or brief and to flag uncertainty instead of filling gaps.
- Test for consistency: run different kinds of realistic assignments through the same Project or custom GPT and review the results against the same checklist.
Instructions and examples can steer an output; they cannot guarantee that every response will comply. Review all material, particularly factual, legal, safety, and brand-sensitive claims, before publication.

Use ChatGPT for image concepts and edits
ChatGPT can generate images and support conversational edits to generated or uploaded images, with available features and interface labels subject to change. Start by explaining what the image needs to accomplish, not just naming a style. OpenAI Academy’s Creating images with ChatGPT guide, published April 10, 2026, says: “A good image prompt does not need to be long. In most cases, 1–3 clear sentences are enough.” That is prompt-length guidance, not a measured promise about image quality.
Build the prompt from the image’s purpose
Include the intended use, main subject, action, setting, and desired visual style. Add framing, lighting, aspect ratio, or other constraints only where they matter. If the image combines several elements, explain their spatial relationships clearly.
Example: “Create a friendly editorial illustration for a beginner’s guide to indoor gardening: a person repotting a small herb plant on a bright kitchen windowsill, with the plant and hands in the foreground. Use a simple, warm palette and leave clear space in the upper-left for a headline.”
Revise one thing at a time
After reviewing the result, give a focused instruction: change the lighting, reposition one object, simplify the background, or adjust the crop. OpenAI Academy advises that step-by-step revisions help maintain consistency as you refine an image. When editing an uploaded image, specify what to change and what should remain untouched. Check the final image for unintended text, visual errors, suitability for the intended audience, and any rights or usage constraints relevant to your project.

When to automate—and when to keep more work manual
- Good candidates: brainstorming, first drafts from approved information, routine adaptations for different channels, proofreading, and summaries that a person can verify.
- Use extra review: work involving facts, regulated or sensitive topics, rights, brand commitments, or audiences for whom tone and accuracy carry significant consequences.
- Keep the final judgment human: choose the strongest idea, confirm what is true and appropriate, and approve publication or distribution.
Use a checklist that matches the job rather than treating “looks polished” as the acceptance test. A content checklist might verify the brief, source facts, required terminology, and audience. An image checklist might verify composition, important details, and suitability for the intended channel.

Common problems and practical fixes
The output sounds generic
The brief may specify a topic without giving an audience, purpose, examples, or voice constraints. Add those elements and provide approved examples. Then ask for a targeted revision rather than requesting an unspecified improvement.
The draft includes details you did not provide
Tell ChatGPT to use only supplied facts and mark gaps for confirmation. Compare each consequential claim against the source material; do not treat confident wording as verification.
Repeated work drifts from the same style
Move recurring files and instructions into a Project, or package a narrowly defined repeated task into a custom GPT. Test the setup with varied examples and revise its instructions when it fails your checklist.
