Choose art supplies that are intended for your child’s age and activity, read the package’s full directions and warnings, and supervise use. For children through Grade 6, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says not to use art supplies with cautionary or warning labels. ASTM D-4236 wording and the ACMI Approved Product seal can help screen art materials, but neither makes a product safe in every situation.
What to check on a craft-supply package
- Age and intended use: Make sure the product is meant for the child and the activity. Follow its age grading and instructions.
- Warnings: Read every caution, not just the front of the package. The CPSC says products with cautionary or warning labels should not be used with children from pre-kindergarten through Grade 6. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also advises against products labeled “Keep Out of Reach of Children,” “Not for Use by Children,” “Poison,” “Danger,” “Warning,” or “Caution.”
- Art-material labeling: Look for “Conforms to ASTM D-4236” or equivalent wording. The AAP also recommends looking for the ACMI Approved Product seal. Treat these as screening information, not a guarantee; read the rest of the label and use the material as directed.
- Original packaging: Avoid donated, found, old, or unlabeled materials unless the original container and full labeling are available. Keep supplies in their labeled containers so warnings and directions remain accessible.
ASTM D-4236 is a practice for precautionary labeling based on an art material’s potential chronic health hazards as assessed by a toxicologist. It does not establish that a product is harmless or ensure completely safe use. See ASTM International’s D4236-26 practice abstract and the CPSC art materials business guidance for the U.S. labeling context.

Which materials are preferable for children?
Health Canada names several alternatives that avoid particular dust, powder, or solvent concerns. These are practical substitutions, not a guarantee that every product in a category is suitable for every child.

|---|---|
| Powdered paint | Child-labeled liquid water-based paint |
| Powdered clay | Pre-mixed, talc-free clay |
| Dust-producing pastels, chalks, or dry markers | Oil pastels, crayons, or dustless chalk |
| Permanent felt-tip markers | Water-based markers |
| Solvent-based adhesives | Water-based white glue |
| Certain chemical commercial dyes | Plant, vegetable, or food dyes |
For children through Grade 6, the CPSC advises avoiding solvents and solvent-based supplies, self-pressurized containers, corrosives, materials that produce inhalable dust, and materials containing lead, cadmium, or other heavy metals. Its examples include turpentine, paint thinner, shellac, toluene, some glues and inks, some solvent-containing permanent markers, acids, alkalis, and bleaches. Follow the age and warning information on the specific product rather than relying on its general category.

Choose tools with supervision in mind
Glue guns
The CPSC advises avoiding high-temperature hot glue guns and using low-temperature models for children up to age 12. That guidance does not make a low-temperature model suitable for unsupervised use or set a universal minimum age. Check the particular glue gun’s instructions and age guidance, and supervise closely.
Slime ingredients
Some do-it-yourself slime recipes use boric acid, including recipes made with contact lens solution. Health Canada advises choosing a recipe without boric acid; do not assume every homemade slime recipe is safe.

Small pieces and choking risk
Check kits for small detachable parts and follow the product’s age warnings. Under CPSC rules, a small part is an object that fits entirely into the regulatory small-parts cylinder without compression in any orientation; pieces that break off during simulated use or abuse may count. Certain children’s products containing small parts, small balls, or marbles require choking-hazard warnings. CPSC lists exclusions that include crayons, chalk, pencils, pens, modeling clay, fingerpaints, watercolors, and other paint sets. An exclusion for a product category does not remove the need to inspect a kit’s separate components. See the CPSC small-parts and choking-hazard guidance.
Set up, supervise, and clean up
Before crafting
- Choose supplies for the child’s age and the intended activity, then read the full label and instructions.
- For children through Grade 6, follow the CPSC’s avoid list and warning-label advice.
- Set up a well-ventilated area and keep food and drinks away from the work surface.
- Consider asthma, allergies, or other individual needs that could affect exposure.
During crafting
- Stay close and watch how materials are being used. The CPSC states that “there is no substitute for direct supervision.”
- Offer small amounts at a time and discourage touching the mouth, tasting materials, or inhaling dust and fumes.
- Have an adult mix powdered or very dusty materials. Do not mix products: Health Canada warns that some combinations can produce harmful gases.
After crafting
- Wash hands with soap and water, and clean the work surface and tools.
- Put supplies back in their original labeled containers and store them away from children and pets.
- Watch for unusual reactions. In the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if needed.
These selection and handling recommendations come from U.S. CPSC and AAP guidance and Health Canada’s Arts and crafts safety page, dated September 24, 2026. The rules and advice may differ outside the United States and Canada.

- Extra strong and durable stainless steel safety blades with rounded safety tips.
- Molded, symmetrical handles allow for either left- or right-handed use.
- Easily cut through paper, string and other craft materials.
- Perfect for students in school
- Manufacturer's Limited 5 Year Warranty
How to compare two craft options
- Compare the age grading and intended use with the child and activity.
- Check that the package is complete and readable, then examine all warnings and directions.
- For art materials, look for ASTM D-4236 wording and, as the AAP recommends, the ACMI Approved Product seal; still read the full label.
- Consider whether a water-based or pre-mixed option avoids a solvent, powder, or dust-producing material.
- For tools, read the tool’s own instructions and identify what adult supervision is required.
- Inspect kits for small detachable components and heed age and choking warnings.
U.S. rules also impose additional children’s-product requirements on art materials designed primarily for children age 12 or younger. The CPSC lists lead limits of 90 parts per million in surface coatings or paint and 100 parts per million total lead in product substrate. These are regulatory limits, not evidence that a particular item has been tested or that it is safe in every use.
