No single BIOS setting fixes thermal throttling on every PC, and nothing in the official documentation shows that a CPU has been throttled “since day one.” Throttling is a protection mechanism, and whether it is happening on your machine depends on your CPU, motherboard or laptop, BIOS version, cooler, workload, and which limit is actually being hit. This guide shows how to identify that limit before you change anything in firmware.
What thermal throttling actually is
Intel describes its Adaptive Thermal Monitor in its datasheet: “As the processor approaches Maximum Operating Temperature, a throttling mechanism will engage to protect the processor from over-heating and provide control thermal budgets.” The mechanism reduces power and temperature by adjusting frequency and voltage, and it can modulate clocks. (Source: Intel Core Processor Series 3 datasheet, Adaptive Thermal Monitor, dated May 19, 2026; the page notes a newer version exists.)

So throttling is the CPU doing its job. Turning off protection is not a fix, and no source reviewed recommends it as one.
Why “one BIOS setting fixes it” is not supported
AMD states: “The operating temperature of any CPU will depend on several factors such as CPU cooler, system air flow, ambient temperature, custom user settings, and workload.” (AMD, Troubleshooting CPU Performance and Temperature Issues.) A BIOS option can only affect the “custom settings” part of that list.

BIOS controls also differ by board. One example is the “Platform Thermal Throttle Limit” option in an MSI AM4 X570 BIOS manual. It sets a maximum processor temperature, and Auto configures it. (MSI AM4 X570 BIOS manual, apparently published around 2022.) That shows such a control can exist on one platform. It does not show that your board has it, that its Auto value is wrong, or that changing it solves a cooling problem. Raising a temperature limit makes the CPU run hotter. It does not remove the heat.
Is it throttling at all? Lower clocks are not proof
A low clock reading alone does not identify the cause. AMD says Precision Boost 2 responds to temperature, workload, power, motherboard power delivery, firmware and software configuration, and other limits. (AMD Precision Boost 2 guidance.) A CPU can sit below its maximum boost because of a power limit, a light workload, a power plan, or a firmware configuration, with no thermal involvement.

- Identify your exact hardware. Note the CPU model, the motherboard or laptop model, and the current BIOS version. Open the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact model, because option names and defaults vary.
- Pick a repeatable workload. Use the same sustained load each time, such as the task that feels slow, so before and after results are comparable.
- Log while it runs. Use a reliable monitoring tool that reports CPU temperature, clock speed, power draw, and, where the tool provides it, the reason for any limit. Watch whether clocks fall as temperature reaches the processor’s maximum.
- Classify what you see. Clocks dropping as temperature plateaus near the maximum points to thermal limiting. Clocks dropping at a steady power figure with temperature well below the maximum points to a power or configuration limit. Low clocks with a light load is normal behavior.
Fixes, matched to the cause
If the limit is thermal
Start with hardware and airflow, which AMD’s guidance emphasizes: confirm the cooler is suitable for the CPU, check the thermal paste, and check that the cooler is mounted correctly. Also check case airflow and ambient temperature, and clean dust from fans and heatsinks. Replacing worn paste or an undersized cooler addresses the heat itself. These are the places where a maintenance purchase may make sense, though the sources do not point to any specific product.

If the limit is power or configuration
Check the BIOS version and your board’s manual for power and boost settings. Look for custom overrides that someone, or a preset profile, may have changed. Update firmware only through the board or laptop manufacturer’s official channel, following its instructions.
If your board has a thermal limit option
Treat it as a tuning choice, not a repair. Use only values the manual documents for your exact board and CPU, and compare temperature and performance under your repeatable workload before and after. Leaving it on Auto is the documented default in the MSI example.

What not to do
- Do not disable thermal protection or push temperature limits upward to hide a cooling fault.
- Do not copy a setting value from a forum post written for a different board or CPU.
- Do not conclude from one low clock reading that the CPU is overheating.
The Bottom Line
Treat the headline as a hypothesis to test. Measure under a repeatable load, find which limit is active, fix cooling first if it is thermal, and change BIOS options only as your exact board’s manual documents them.
