The Dallas Cowboys acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers, sending Pittsburgh a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. Dallas cited injuries in its secondary as context for the move. Porter brings three seasons of NFL experience, but his health, role in Dallas and eventual impact were not established in the teams’ trade announcements.
What picks did Dallas give up for Joey Porter Jr.?
The Cowboys sent the Steelers a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. That is the confirmed exchange. The selections are future draft assets; their eventual value depends on which players are available and what the teams do with the picks. The transaction alone does not settle whether the price was worthwhile.
Why did the Cowboys trade for Porter?
Dallas cited injuries in the secondary as context for adding a cornerback. Its announcement pointed to hamstring trouble for Cobie Durant and knee and ankle issues listed for Shavon Revel. Dallas characterized Porter as a high-level outside starter; that is the team’s assessment, not an independent projection of his performance in its defense. Dallas’s announcement

Contract context: no extension is established
NFL.com reported that Porter was entering the final season of his 2023 rookie contract and that extension talks with Pittsburgh had not produced an agreement. The trade announcement does not say Dallas signed him to an extension, so the move should not be described as a long-term contract commitment. NFL.com
DallasCowboys.com estimated his remaining 2026 charge at roughly $4.92 million. That figure is the outlet’s estimate, not a separately verified league filing in the sources cited here. DallasCowboys.com analysis

What remains uncertain about Porter’s Cowboys role
The teams’ announcements establish the trade terms and Pittsburgh’s account of Porter’s prior record. They do not establish whether he has played for Dallas since the deal, his post-trade health, any extension agreement, his eventual role or the trade’s on-field value. Those questions require subsequent team and league updates, as well as performance over time.

At the transaction level, Dallas exchanged two future picks—including a second-rounder—for an experienced cornerback while citing secondary injuries. Pittsburgh turned a player nearing the end of his rookie deal into draft assets. Whether either side benefits more cannot be judged from the trade terms alone.
