The standard Coway Airmega 400 is a capable large-room purifier, but its headline coverage figures need context: Coway rates it for 1,560 square feet at two air changes per hour, while ENERGY STAR lists 583 square feet and RTINGS recommends 575 square feet based on independent testing. That difference matters because a room’s size alone does not tell you how quickly air is cleaned. The 400’s high-speed airflow is substantial; at a quieter setting, its measured airflow drops sharply.
How large a room can the Airmega 400 clean?
There is no single room-size figure that answers this without stating the air-change rate and measurement basis. Coway’s US product page specifies coverage of 1,560 square feet at two air changes per hour (ACH), or 3,120 square feet at one ACH. One ACH means the equivalent of the room’s air volume passes through the purifier once per hour; two ACH doubles that turnover. These are manufacturer coverage claims, not independent test results.

For a different point of reference, ENERGY STAR’s record for the certified AP-2015F lists a 583-square-foot room size. RTINGS recommends 575 square feet for the Graphite Airmega 400 under its own methodology. Those numbers should not be treated as direct corrections to Coway’s figures: sources can use different assumptions and protocols. The practical question is whether the fan speed you can live with provides enough airflow for your room.

RTINGS measured 368 CFM PM1.0 CADR at maximum speed, equivalent to 625 m³/h, and recommends 575 square feet at that performance level. At its low-noise threshold, RTINGS measured 117 CFM (198 m³/h) and recommends 182 square feet. A large room may therefore require a higher, louder setting to get the turnover you want; choosing a low setting for quiet operation comes with a meaningful airflow trade-off.

CADR is a useful way to compare how quickly a purifier delivers cleaned air, but keep the pollutant and source attached to the figure. Coway’s US specifications list 328 CFM for smoke, 328 CFM for dust, and 400 CFM for pollen. ENERGY STAR’s certification record lists 376, 384, and 409 CFM for smoke, dust, and pollen, respectively, plus 380 CFM PM2.5 CADR. RTINGS’ 368 CFM figure is its measured PM1.0 CADR at maximum speed. These are not identical measurements and should not be mixed into one ranking.
Is it quiet enough for everyday use?
Noise depends on the chosen fan speed. Coway specifies a 22–52 dB(A) range. RTINGS measured 31.6 dBA at the lowest speed and 60.1 dBA at the highest in its test. The test readings differ from the manufacturer’s range, so they should be read as separate measurements rather than reconciled as though they came from the same method.

- 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐈𝐑 𝐈?𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄: Purify your air quickly. With a traditional air inlet and the additional U-shaped air inlet, airborne pet hairs and odors can easily be trapped without causing clogs
RTINGS found the lower speeds quiet enough for many bedrooms and living spaces. But low-speed quietness does not mean the purifier will move enough air for a large room at that setting: its measured low-noise CADR was 117 CFM. If you expect it to handle a large, open area quickly, account for the sound of running it faster.
What filtration and controls does it have?
The standard Airmega 400 has two filter assemblies. Each combines a washable pre-filter with a replaceable Max2 cartridge; Coway describes the Max2 as combining activated carbon and HEPA filtration. The washable pre-filters catch larger particles and need regular cleaning, while both Max2 cartridges are replaced as a set when due.

What will filter maintenance involve?
Coway describes the Max2 set as lasting about a year in its specifications, and gives a 6–12 month range elsewhere on the product page. The unit estimates filter life based on usage and provides change indicators. RTINGS also advises regular cleaning of the washable pre-filters and replacing both Max2 cartridges roughly annually.
Because the purifier uses two replaceable cartridges at once, the cost of a compatible pair is an important ownership expense. ENERGY STAR lists replacement filter model numbers 1230060 and 3104757 for the AP-2015F. Before buying, check current fitment for the Airmega 400/AP-2015F, the price for both cartridges, and whether the seller and product are genuine or compatible.

How much space does it take, and what does it use?
Coway lists the Airmega 400 at 14.8 × 22.8 × 14.8 inches and 24.7 pounds. It has a substantial footprint for a floor-standing purifier, so measure the intended location and leave enough room for its air intake and outlet. Coway specifies 66 W power consumption; ENERGY STAR’s certification record lists annual energy use of 366 kWh. The ENERGY STAR record also reports zero ozone emissions.
Verdict: who should buy the Coway Airmega 400?
The Airmega 400 is a strong fit if you want a high-airflow purifier with washable pre-filters, automatic operation, and onboard air-quality feedback, and you have room for its large body. Its maximum-speed performance is the most persuasive reason to consider it. The trade-offs are equally concrete: lower-speed airflow is far lower, high speed is noticeably louder in RTINGS’ test, the standard model lacks app control, and two Max2 cartridges create recurring replacement costs.
Do not choose it solely because a room falls under Coway’s 1,560-square-foot figure. Decide how many air changes you want, use the source-specific room and CADR figures as context, and consider whether you will tolerate the fan speed needed to achieve that turnover.
