Short answer: An entry fragger leads a Terrorist-side attack and takes space, an anchor defends a designated Counter-Terrorist bombsite, and an AWPer uses the AWP to create high-impact threats from changing positions. These are tactical responsibilities, not permanent character classes: players and teams can combine or change them by map, side, economy, and strategy.
What the three roles mean at a glance
Counter-Strike 2 has no official character-selection screen that assigns these jobs. “Entry fragger,” “anchor,” and “AWPer” are community and team vocabulary for describing who is responsible for what during a round. The labels help you understand a match, communicate a plan, or decide what to practice, but they do not lock a player into one weapon or position every round.

| Role | Usual side and context | Primary responsibility | Typical risk and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry fragger | Most visible on the T side during site attacks | Lead the group, make first contact, take space, and help reveal or displace defenders | Early, deliberate exposure to enemy fire |
| Anchor | CT side, assigned mainly to one bombsite | Hold A or B long enough for kills, delay, information, or rotations to matter | May have little action, then face a coordinated hit alone |
| AWPer | Both sides; positioning changes with the plan | Use the AWP’s threat and one-shot potential to control angles, find openings, or support teammates | Balancing impact, positioning, survival, and an expensive rifle |
A useful way to read the roles is through information. Teams begin with incomplete knowledge of enemy positions. The entry helps the attacking side make contact and gain access; the anchor protects a site while waiting for reliable information or help; the AWPer makes certain routes dangerous and can punish a predictable peek.
What does an entry fragger do?
Leads the attack rather than simply chasing a first kill
An entry fragger is usually the aggressive rifler at the front of a Terrorist-side push. HLTV’s How to watch Counter-Strike also calls this player a “space taker.” The job is to be first or among the first players into a contested area, where defenders can see and shoot the attackers.

The first kill is valuable, but it is not the complete definition. An entry can succeed by forcing a defender to move, drawing attention so a teammate can trade, identifying a hidden angle, or getting the group safely through a choke point. A player who dies after opening a site for two teammates may have done the job correctly; a player who survives but leaves the team stuck outside can have a less useful round.
What an entry is trying to create
- Access: a path through the first defensive line and into useful positions.
- Information: knowledge of which angles are occupied and how defenders react.
- Pressure: enough immediate danger that defenders cannot comfortably hold every angle.
- Trade opportunities: a teammate close enough to answer the defender who takes the entry fight.
These outcomes explain why entry work is a team responsibility even when one player is named the entry. The player at the front needs a trade partner, usable utility, and a plan for what happens after contact. If the entry swings alone while the rest of the team is still several seconds away, the death may provide no practical gain.
Entry timing on a normal site hit
- Approach: the group reaches the intended lane or choke point while preserving enough spacing to avoid one grenade or burst stopping everyone.
- Preparation: teammates use flashes, smokes, or other utility to reduce the number of angles the entry must face at once.
- Contact: the entry clears the most dangerous immediate angle and commits far enough to make room for the players behind them.
- Trade: a nearby rifler follows the same route and attacks the defender who shoots the entry.
- Conversion: surviving attackers secure the site, plant, and reposition instead of continuing to take unnecessary isolated fights.
The exact sequence changes by map and strategy. Some attacks use a fast group burst; others send one player to probe first and delay the full commitment. Calling a player an entry does not mean that player must run first on every round.

What is an anchor in CS2?
The CT player assigned to a bombsite
An anchor is primarily responsible for defending one bombsite, usually A or B, from the Counter-Terrorist side. HLTV’s guide gives the role a precise description: “The anchor is the player whose primary task is to defend the A or B bombsite, either with kills or by delaying the onrushing Ts.” The guide is an editorial viewing resource published March 14, 2024, not a Valve rulebook, but the description matches common competitive usage.
An anchor may hold a site from a strong fixed position, play a close angle for a surprise fight, or move between several positions within that site. The important distinction is responsibility: when an attack arrives, the anchor is expected to contest the site and buy time for teammates to rotate.
Why an anchor can look inactive
For much of a round, an anchor may hear nothing. That quiet period is part of the job, not evidence that the player is uninvolved. Leaving too early can give the attackers a free plant or allow a late lurker to walk into the site. The anchor must watch for sound, utility, spotted enemies, and timing clues while remaining ready for a sudden full execution.
When the hit comes, the anchor can help in several ways:

- Get a kill: remove an attacker before the site is overwhelmed.
- Delay: use cover, movement, utility, or a retreat path to consume seconds.
- Communicate: report the number of attackers, their entry point, and whether the bomb is seen.
- Preserve a retake: fall back without donating a second weapon, then help teammates retake with the information gained.
Exact anchor positions depend on the map, bombsite geometry, utility lineups, and the team’s preferred rotation rules. “Anchor” does not mean standing motionless in one corner.
Anchor versus rotator
A rotator is usually positioned to support either site or a nearby lane. The rotator can respond to early information and reinforce the threatened bombsite. The anchor stays primarily tied to the assigned site until the evidence is strong enough to justify moving. Teams need both: if every defender rotates at the first footstep, the original site becomes undefended; if nobody rotates, an anchor can be isolated against too many attackers.
What does an AWPer do?
The primary AWP user, not a fixed personality type
An AWPer is the player who primarily uses the AWP when the team can afford and fit it into the round plan. The rifle’s long-range threat changes which angles opponents can safely challenge, but owning the weapon does not prescribe one universal style.
HLTV’s role guide describes aggressive AWPers who take contested positions and more passive AWPers who prefer distance, favorable sightlines, and survival. Both approaches can be correct. A team may need an opening pick on one round and a player holding a long lane on another.
AWPing on the CT side
On defense, an AWPer often seeks a sightline that can punish an early peek or deny a key route. The guide emphasizes changing positions rather than becoming predictable. After taking a shot, the player may relocate, hold a different angle, or support a teammate with utility when smoke blocks the scope’s view.
The CT AWPer’s value is not limited to kills. A missed or delayed peek can still force attackers to spend utility, wait for a flash, or choose a slower route. The threat changes the opponent’s timing and pathing. At the same time, an AWPer who repeatedly takes the same exposed duel can be neutralized, leaving the team without its most influential weapon.
AWPing on the T side
On offense, the AWPer may travel with the main pack while the team takes map control, or hold a long angle that protects the group from a defender’s swing. The correct position depends on the execute, the map, and whether the team needs a pick, protection, or post-plant coverage.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
An AWPer must also account for the weapon’s handling and replacement cost. A risky fight that loses the rifle can damage the next round’s plan, especially when the team’s economy is fragile. That does not mean the player should avoid every fight; it means the fight should serve a clear tactical purpose.
How the roles work together in a round
A common CT structure
One common three-lane CT setup described by HLTV uses two anchors, two rotators, and one floating AWPer. The anchors begin with primary responsibility for the two sites. Rotators cover connecting areas and respond to information. The floating AWPer looks for impact across the map instead of being permanently tied to one bombsite.
This is a pattern, not a mandatory lineup. A team may use a second AWPer, give the sniper a fixed site, or make a rifler more mobile. Map geometry and player strengths determine the details.
A common T-side structure
The same guide gives an example with a three-player pack—often an aggressive rifler, the in-game leader, and an AWPer—plus two lurkers. The pack creates immediate pressure while lurkers hold or test other areas, watch for rotations, and attack from a delayed timing.
Again, “often” matters. Some teams keep all five players together for a fast hit; others split early for map control. A lurker is not automatically an entry, and an AWPer can join either the pack or a separate control group.
The information chain
- The entry or another forward player makes contact and reports what is visible.
- The anchor’s call confirms whether the site is under pressure, lightly probed, or fully hit.
- The AWPer’s position determines which lane is dangerous for the opponents and whether the team can safely reinforce another area.
- Rotators use those calls to decide whether to support, hold, or save a retake resource.
This chain is why role performance cannot be judged only by the scoreboard. A player may provide critical space, delay, or threat without recording the round’s first kill.
Role comparison: side, timing, and decision-making
| Question | Entry fragger | Anchor | AWPer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where is the role most visible? | At the front of a T-side push | At a CT bombsite when attackers commit | At long or high-value angles on either side |
| What does success look like? | Space, information, a kill, or a tradeable opening | Site survival, a kill, delay, or useful information for rotation | A pick, denied route, forced respect, or protected teammate |
| What is the main danger? | Being isolated before teammates can trade | Being overwhelmed or rotating too early | Becoming predictable or losing the rifle in a low-value duel |
| Does the job stay the same all round? | No; the player may become a post-plant rifler | Mostly, until the site is lost or a rotation is justified | No; the style can change after a pick, smoke, or reposition |
How to identify these roles while watching a match
Follow responsibility, not the weapon skin or first death
Track where a player begins, who moves first when contact occurs, and who is expected to remain behind. The first player to die is not automatically the entry; the player may have been taking an unrelated solo fight. Likewise, the player holding an AWP in one round may buy a rifle or hand the sniper to a teammate in the next.

Ask three questions
- Who is creating the first access? That is likely the entry or another designated space taker.
- Who is still responsible for the site when teammates leave? That is likely the anchor.
- Which player’s sightline changes the opponent’s route? That is often the AWPer, whether aggressive or passive.
Use the minimap and round context. A player’s location alone can mislead: an anchor can rotate after confirming the bomb elsewhere, and an AWPer can temporarily play close while supporting a fast hit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes when assigning or playing these roles
Reducing entry to “get the first kill”
This encourages reckless solo peeks and ignores spacing. The practical correction is to define the entry’s first objective as taking a useful area with a teammate close enough to trade. A kill is excellent; surviving long enough to create access can also be correct.
Treating an anchor as a stationary turret
Anchors need information, fallback routes, and timing discipline. Holding the same angle every round makes the site easy to pre-aim. Leaving at the first sound gives attackers a free site. Vary the position within the site and communicate before moving.
Assuming every AWPer must be aggressive
Some rounds require an opening attempt; others require denial and survival. Decide whether the team needs a pick, a protected lane, or a late-round weapon. Change position after opponents adapt rather than forcing the same duel.
Using labels as excuses
“I am the entry” does not excuse ignoring a trade, and “I am the anchor” does not excuse withholding information. Roles clarify priorities; they do not remove the need to communicate, use utility, and react to the round.
How to practice each role
Entry practice
- Learn the first dangerous angle on each common approach.
- Practice entering behind a flash or smoke while keeping a trade distance.
- After contact, clear the next angle instead of stopping in the doorway.
- Review whether your death created space or merely gave the opponents a free duel.
Anchor practice
- Choose two or three positions in the assigned site and understand their escape routes.
- Practice calling the number and direction of attackers before taking a second fight.
- Learn when to spend utility for delay and when to preserve it for a retake.
- Review rounds in which you rotated: identify the information that justified the move.
AWP practice
- Build a small set of reliable opening angles rather than memorizing every possible peek.
- Practice relocating after a shot so opponents cannot pre-fire a repeated position.
- Work on unscoped movement, close-range fallback fights, and survival after a missed shot.
- Coordinate with a rifler who can trade or protect you while you hold a long lane.
Valve’s learning resources also use broader terms such as backup, support, and defender, showing that role vocabulary can be distributed in different ways. The labels are useful when they make a plan clearer, not when they become rigid class rules.

Valve’s March 18, 2026 update added limited map guides in Competitive and Retakes. The update describes a five-round-per-half default and a 30-node limit for those guides. These settings are practice-tool parameters, not definitions of entry, anchor, or AWPer roles. They can nevertheless help you rehearse a repeatable route: mark where an entry begins contact, where an anchor falls back, or where an AWPer changes position after a shot.
Best Value
Do not treat a guided route as a substitute for reading opponents. The useful skill is recognizing when the round has supplied different information and adjusting the role’s responsibility.
How fixed are roles from map to map?
They are not fixed. A bombsite with several entrances may require an anchor to play more passively and rely on early utility. A narrow lane may give an AWPer a powerful sightline but also make the player vulnerable to a coordinated flash. A map with fast connections can make rotators more important than a strict two-anchor setup.
Player skill also changes the assignment. A team may ask its strongest aimer to entry, its calmest communicator to anchor, or its best long-range decision-maker to AWP. Those choices can change after a player dies, the bomb is planted, or the team loses the rifle it planned to use.

The labels tell you about a player’s expected responsibility in a particular tactical setup. They do not prove that the player always uses one weapon, always enters first, or never rotates. They also do not predict a player’s personality or mechanical skill.
HLTV’s detailed role guidance is dated March 14, 2024 and is intended to help viewers understand Counter-Strike matches. Valve’s role-related learning material is from the CS:GO era, so it supports the general idea of flexible role vocabulary rather than serving as proof of a current CS2 mechanic. The current game’s map-guide update likewise adds practice context without redefining the roles.
Bottom line for players and viewers
Think of the three roles as answers to three different tactical problems. The entry fragger solves access: someone must take the first dangerous space so the attack can move. The anchor solves time: someone must keep a bombsite contested until information and rotations can matter. The AWPer solves threat: someone must make key angles and routes dangerous with a high-impact sniper rifle.
Strong teams connect those answers. The entry has a trade, the anchor communicates before and during the hit, and the AWPer changes position and purpose with the plan. Once you watch for responsibility instead of only kills, Counter-Strike 2’s rounds become easier to read—and your own role decisions become easier to improve.
