Could You Be Starting to Resent Someone? 5 Signs to Notice

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resentment may be building when hurt or frustration keeps returning, you replay what happened, avoid the person or topic, or notice your behavior and connection changing. None of these signs proves resentment or explains the other person’s intentions. They are prompts to examine what feels unresolved and, if it is safe, decide what you need next.

What resentment can mean

Resentment is a complex response to feeling mistreated or wronged. It can involve anger, bitterness, disappointment, disgust, or disapproval. In relationships, it may follow perceived unfairness, broken trust, feeling ignored or hurt, or a series of smaller injuries. It can grow through unresolved conflict, unmet needs, feeling unseen, an imbalance in practical or emotional work, or outside stress. Those circumstances may help explain a feeling; they do not establish blame or prove what another person intended. Cleveland Clinic and Banner Health describe resentment as more than a single moment of anger.

The five patterns below are not a validated screening checklist. A feeling or behavior can have other explanations, and one sign alone cannot diagnose resentment.

Five signs resentment may be building

1. Negative feelings return around the same person or memory

Anger, hostility, bitterness, discomfort, or disgust may resurface when the person, situation, or memory comes to mind. Psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, of Cleveland Clinic describes recurring negative feelings as one pattern associated with resentment. The feeling is worth noticing, but it is not proof by itself.

2. You keep replaying the hurt

You may revisit what happened, imagine what should have been said or done, or feel stuck because there was no closure. Repeatedly returning to the injury can suggest that something remains unresolved, even if the original event seems small to someone else.

3. The situation brings regret, shame, guilt, or self-doubt

Resentment can coexist with regret or guilt, especially when you feel blamed or unappreciated. These emotions also arise for many other reasons, so consider them part of the wider picture rather than a distinctive test.

4. You avoid the person, conversation, or reminders

You might put off a difficult conversation, steer clear of the person, or avoid situations that bring the hurt back. Avoidance can feel protective in the short term, but it may leave the underlying issue untouched and allow resentment to grow. You do not need to confront someone if doing so could put you at risk; safety comes first.

5. Your behavior or closeness changes

Notice whether you have become more irritable, make passive-aggressive comments, keep score, nitpick, revive old arguments, withdraw from affection or time together, or feel lonely while together. Banner Health identifies these as possible relationship clues; Cleveland Clinic also notes lashing out and passive aggression. They can signal strain, but they do not prove its cause.

What to do when you notice a pattern

Get specific before assigning a label

Ask yourself what exactly hurt, when the pattern began, and what need feels unmet. Writing down the event, your feelings, and what you hope will change can help clarify what you want to say. Banner Health psychologist Elena Rivera, PsyD, recommends journaling to sort through the situation and goals before a conversation.

Describe the impact and make a clear request

If talking feels safe and useful, focus on one specific experience and what you need rather than making a sweeping accusation. For example, Banner Health suggests replacing “You never care about me” with “I’ve been feeling unimportant lately and I want to talk about it.” The aim is to make the issue discussable, not to guarantee agreement or reconciliation.

Look for the cycle beneath repeated arguments

A recurring request can turn into a loop: one person feels ignored, frustration rises, criticism follows, and the other person becomes defensive or withdraws. The Gottman Institute’s discussion of repeated requests points toward examining the need and interaction pattern rather than treating the problem as a character flaw. Listening to understand and acknowledging each other’s feelings may help both people feel heard.

When outside support may help

Consider professional support if conflict stays unresolved, fights repeatedly center on fairness, you still feel unheard after multiple conversations, either of you shuts down or breaks down emotionally, or change increasingly seems impossible. Banner Health says couples therapy can offer structure and guidance; if your partner is unwilling, individual therapy can still help you understand your reactions, boundaries, and communication.

The Canadian Psychological Association describes behavioral marital therapy, cognitive behavioral couple therapy, and emotion-focused couple therapy as approaches for distressed couples. These are options to discuss with a qualified professional, not a ranking or guarantee of results. If you fear for your safety, prioritize individualized professional and safety support rather than joint sessions.
