Yes—by the end of Wano, Luffy has surpassed Kaido in the clearest canon sense available: awakened Gear 5 Luffy defeats Kaido in their concluding battle. That is a documented story result, not proof that Luffy wins every possible rematch under every condition. Kaido’s durability and experience remain important comparison points, while Luffy’s awakening, creativity and ability to recover after extreme exhaustion supply the breakthrough.
What “surpass Kaido” means in canon
The answer depends on what the word surpass is being asked to mean. One Piece has no official numerical power scale that assigns a permanent score to every fighter. The available canon instead gives readers a decisive event: Luffy and Kaido’s Wano battle reaches its conclusion after Luffy awakens his Devil Fruit and names the new form Gear 5. The official synopsis for One Piece, Vol. 104 identifies the fruit as the Mythical Zoan Human-Human Fruit, Model Nika, and says that the Luffy–Kaido fight concludes.

That makes the strongest defensible statement narrower than “Luffy is now automatically stronger in every statistic.” Luffy has passed Kaido’s demonstrated benchmark by winning the story’s final-round confrontation. A hypothetical rematch could change the circumstances—starting condition, fatigue, allies, terrain or knowledge of Gear 5—so the result should not be converted into an unsupported universal ranking.
The Wano climax is the decisive growth milestone
Luffy’s fruit revelation
Volume 104’s official description records the revelation that the fruit Luffy had called the “Gomu Gomu no Mi” is actually the Mythical Zoan Human-Human Fruit, Model Nika. Luffy calls the awakened power Gear 5. This is not merely a new name for an old technique: it is the story’s explicit turning point in the Kaido fight and the largest increase in capability shown in that confrontation.

The final exchange
The official episode 1072 page, broadcast on August 13, 2023, shows Luffy returning to Gear 5 after severe exhaustion and confronting Kaido again. The same page preserves Luffy’s declaration: 「おれが誰か? モンキー・D・ルフィ!お前を超えて海賊王になる男だ!!」 Luffy identifies himself and says that he will surpass Kaido and become Pirate King. The line states the goal; the conclusion of the fight supplies the canonical outcome used to assess it.
What the earlier episode establishes
The official episode 1049 page, dated January 29, 2023, documents the battle’s final approach, with Luffy and Yamato striking Kaido while the Wano conflict is still continuing. This matters because the fight is presented as an extended battle rather than a fresh, untouched duel that begins and ends in a single exchange. Any comparison should therefore identify whether it is discussing the climax as depicted or an imagined reset in which both combatants begin fully rested.
How the two fighters compare at the demonstrated endpoint
| Comparison axis | What the canon establishes | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Direct fight result | Awakened Gear 5 Luffy defeats Kaido when their Wano fight concludes. | This is the clearest basis for saying Luffy has surpassed him at the story’s current demonstrated endpoint. |
| Peak transformation | Luffy’s awakening reveals the Model Nika fruit and is named Gear 5. | Gear 5 is the breakthrough state that changes the outcome of the climax. |
| Stamina and recovery | Episode 1072 shows Luffy returning to Gear 5 after severe exhaustion. | The form can reappear after a serious energy crisis, but the scene does not establish an unlimited duration or cost-free use. |
| Durability | Kaido remains the battle’s durability benchmark; the official material does not publish a numerical durability rating. | Winning does not erase Kaido’s ability to absorb punishment or make every future exchange easy. |
| Combat experience | Kaido’s long experience remains a meaningful comparison point in the supplied official material. | Experience can affect a hypothetical rematch even though it does not overturn the documented Wano result. |
| Outside events and prior damage | The official episode material presents the Luffy–Kaido conflict as part of the continuing Wano battle, including the episode 1049 sequence with Yamato. | A clean one-on-one conclusion and the full battle as depicted are different analytical scenarios. |
Why Gear 5 changes the comparison
It is an awakening, not a routine upgrade
The official Volume 104 synopsis links three facts: the fruit’s true identity, its awakened state and Luffy’s name for that state. That combination marks Gear 5 as a structural change in how Luffy fights, rather than a small increase to an existing attack. The story places the awakening at the point where the Kaido battle is decided.

Creativity becomes a combat advantage
The supplied official interpretation identifies Luffy’s creativity as one of the reasons the awakening provides a breakthrough. In practical terms, this means the comparison cannot be reduced to who has the larger conventional strength figure. Luffy’s ability to apply a newly awakened power in an unpredictable way is part of the advantage that lets him overcome Kaido at the climax.

Recovery is part of the evidence, not a guarantee
Episode 1072 specifically depicts Luffy returning to Gear 5 after severe exhaustion. That scene is evidence that the form can be regained in the battle’s extreme conditions. It is not evidence that Luffy can activate it indefinitely, ignore fatigue or reproduce the exact same recovery in every future fight. Treating a demonstrated recovery as an unlimited resource would go beyond what the episode establishes.
What Kaido still represents
Durability remains relevant after the defeat
A defeat does not retroactively remove the qualities that made Kaido the decisive Wano benchmark. The supplied comparison guidance identifies his durability as a meaningful axis. Luffy’s victory therefore shows that Gear 5 can overcome that durability in the documented climax; it does not show that Kaido becomes fragile or that every Gear 5 attack has the same effect against every opponent.
Experience changes a hypothetical rematch
Kaido’s experience is another explicit comparison point. In a rematch, both fighters would know more about the other’s habits, but experience could still influence timing, pacing and tactical choices. The official pages establish the result that happened, not a simulation of a rematch with revised knowledge and no accumulated damage.

The battle’s conditions matter
The Wano fight unfolds amid a larger conflict. Episode 1049’s account of Luffy and Yamato striking Kaido is a reminder that readers should state their assumptions before calling a comparison “one-on-one.” If the question means “Who won the final canonical confrontation?” the answer is Luffy. If it means “Who wins a fresh duel with no prior events?” the official sources supplied here do not provide a guaranteed answer.

Does the victory prove Luffy is stronger in every category?
No. A fight result is decisive evidence of superiority in that encounter, but it does not create a published ranking for every attribute. The official material does not give universal numbers for power, speed, endurance or durability, and no independent statistical study is established in the cited material. It is therefore precise to say that Luffy’s peak, awakened performance is sufficient to defeat Kaido in the Wano climax. It is not precise to claim that every version of Luffy dominates every version of Kaido in every measurable category.
This distinction also prevents two opposite mistakes. One mistake is dismissing the win by saying that Luffy never surpassed Kaido because the battle had difficult circumstances; that ignores the canon conclusion. The other is treating the win as a permanent, context-free multiplier that settles all future matchups; that adds a rule the story has not published.

Three useful ways to answer the common versions of the question
“Did Luffy beat Kaido?”
Yes. The official Volume 104 description says the fight concludes, and the Wano climax presents awakened Gear 5 Luffy as the victor.

At the peak shown in that fight, Gear 5 gives Luffy enough of an advantage to defeat Kaido. “Stronger” should be read as superior in the demonstrated confrontation, not as a claim that every isolated attribute has been numerically proven higher.

“Would Luffy win every rematch?”
Canon does not guarantee that. A rematch would require assumptions about fatigue, prior damage, allies, terrain, each fighter’s knowledge and whether Luffy can reproduce the same Gear 5 recovery. None of those assumptions is settled by a universal official ranking.
A practical framework for judging future power comparisons
- Identify the versions. Separate pre-awakening Luffy from the awakened Gear 5 version and specify which point in Kaido’s Wano battle is being used.
- Define the win condition. Decide whether “surpass” means winning the canonical fight, matching durability, lasting longer, or winning a fresh rematch.
- Separate peak output from repeatability. Gear 5 is the decisive peak shown in Wano, while episode 1072’s exhaustion scene warns against assuming unlimited repeat use.
- Account for the battle context. State whether prior damage, the continuing Wano conflict and other participants count.
- Use outcomes before speculation. The documented conclusion should carry more weight than an invented numerical tier list.
Where the evidence stops
The official pages establish the fruit revelation, Gear 5, the continuing battle, Luffy’s declaration and the conclusion of the Luffy–Kaido fight. They do not publish a universal numeric ranking, a promise that Luffy wins every hypothetical rematch or a complete statistical profile for either fighter. Claims beyond those points should be labeled interpretation rather than presented as settled canon.
Verdict
Luffy surpasses Kaido at the endpoint the story actually shows: awakened Gear 5 enables him to win their concluding Wano battle. Kaido’s durability and experience explain why the victory is a major growth milestone rather than a routine upgrade. The most accurate reading is therefore both clear and qualified—Luffy has crossed Kaido’s demonstrated benchmark, while the result does not turn every future matchup into a guaranteed one-sided win.
