As of October 3, 2026, LaNorris Sellers had not been reported as removed from South Carolina’s starting quarterback job. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that backup Cutter Woods had received more first-team practice reps that week and could replace Sellers if Sellers continued to struggle as a passer. That is a reported possibility, not confirmation of a benching.
Will LaNorris Sellers be benched?
There was no confirmed quarterback change in the reports available on October 3. The Saturday Down South report that day described Woods as a potential replacement if Sellers continued to struggle; the September 30 report had also framed Woods as an option, not a starter already selected. The October 3 report came on the day South Carolina was scheduled to play Kentucky, so the lineup question was still live at publication.
South Carolina coach Shane Beamer did not identify which quarterbacks were practicing with the first team in the September 30 report. He said, “Every position is accountable. Every week in practice there is competition that’s ongoing at our place, no matter the position.” The statement describes the team’s general approach to competition; it does not announce that Sellers had lost his role.
Why is Sellers’ starting role under scrutiny?
The September 30 report said Sellers had struggled to see the field, missed open receivers and put the ball in danger. It also cautioned that he was not the sole reason South Carolina lost its first two SEC games. At that point, the Gamecocks were 2-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play, and had gone more than a calendar year without an SEC win.

Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles acknowledged the missed throws, saying, “I wish I could put my finger on it exactly.” He said he did not believe Sellers had physical limitations and emphasized trusting what he sees, knowing where teammates should be and trusting himself. On the possibility of another quarterback playing, Briles said, “Everybody’s competing all the time. There’s always a chance for anybody to be able to get out there. If we feel like that what was what gave us the best chance to win the game, then that’s what we do.”
The October 3 report said Sellers had six touchdown passes and four interceptions. It also said South Carolina’s offense had scored 39 points over its preceding seven quarters and had not scored a touchdown against Alabama until the Crimson Tide led 35-3. Those figures help explain the pressure on the passing game, but do not establish that a change had been made.

Is Cutter Woods replacing Sellers, and what has Woods shown?
Woods was reported to have received increased first-team reps, which signals a possible contingency rather than a completed replacement. The September 30 report said he had appeared in three games that season, most recently against Alabama, and had played sparingly across his two seasons at South Carolina.
In the reported Kent State game, Woods completed 9 of 14 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. That is a specific sample of game action, not evidence in these reports that he had established himself as the new starter. The cited coverage does not name a confirmed alternative starter.

How does this compare with Sellers’ earlier production?
The Associated Press reported in August 2026 that South Carolina went 9-4 in Sellers’ first season in control, then 4-8 in the following season. It gave Sellers’ 2024 totals as 2,534 passing yards, 674 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. In the subsequent season, he was sacked 42 times, the most among SEC quarterbacks, and ran for nearly 400 fewer yards than in 2024.
Those historical numbers explain why the contrast between Sellers’ standout 2024 and the later downturn is part of the discussion. They are not his current-season totals, and they do not by themselves resolve who should start now.

What would confirm a quarterback change?
More first-team reps and public remarks about competition are evidence that South Carolina was considering its options, but they are not an official depth-chart announcement. Confirmation would require a direct team announcement or clear reporting that Woods, rather than Sellers, would start. Until then, the precise description is that Woods had increased practice reps and could play if Sellers continued to struggle.
Sellers himself framed confidence as something built through preparation after a difficult season: “But it’s like, if you lose a bunch of games, that’s going to happen to everybody. So it’s about attacking every day. If you’re prepared, that’ll handle the confidence.”
