Is GTA 6 banned in Australia?
No. The Australian Classification Board’s Rockstar-specific record classifies Grand Theft Auto VI R18+. That restricts the game to adults under the Australian rating system; it is not a ban or a Refused Classification decision. The record is dated August 27, 2026, and gives the consumer advice “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” Australian Classification Board: Grand Theft Auto VI

The Board explains that films and computer games classified R18+ are legally restricted to adults aged 18 and over. Its separate X18+ category is for films, not a higher video-game rating, so the labels should not be confused. Australian Classification Board: What are the ratings?

Why can a game with sex scenes still receive R18+?
Australia’s 2023 computer-game guidelines do not prohibit every depiction of sexual content in an R18+ game. They state that depictions of actual sexual activity are not permitted, while simulated sexual activity may be permitted. The guidelines also rule out simulated sexual activity that is explicit and realistic. A game that exceeds the R18+ category is Refused Classification. - Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
These are category standards, not a scene-by-scene account of GTA 6. The Board’s short phrase “sex scenes” does not establish whether a scene includes nudity, how explicit it is, or whether players can interact with it. Those details should not be inferred from the classification alone.
What do the Australian and North American ratings say?
| Jurisdiction and rating body | Rating | Relevant wording | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia, Australian Classification Board | R18+ | “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use” | Legally restricted to adults aged 18 and over in Australia. |
| North America, ESRB | Mature 17+ | Includes “Strong Sexual Content” and “Nudity” | The ESRB’s rating and descriptors apply to its North American classification. |
The ESRB listing is for North America and should not be treated as an Australian legal classification. Rating labels and descriptor wording belong to their respective systems; they are not interchangeable measures of exactly what appears in the game. ESRB: Grand Theft Auto VI

- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Why do some Australian listings show a different rating?
A separate Australian Classification Board entry titled “GTA 6 GRAND THEFT AUTO 6” appears as a generic IARC Global Rating Tool result with a PG rating and descriptors for mild violence, in-game purchases, online interactivity and chat. Its developer and publisher fields are unspecified. The available records do not explain how that entry relates to the Rockstar-specific, multi-platform R18+ record, so they should not be combined or presented as equivalent. For Rockstar’s game and its sex-scenes descriptor, the relevant record is the one that names Grand Theft Auto VI and Rockstar Games.
