In laboratory tests, their fabric moved and evaporated water faster than the cotton, nylon and polyester samples they compared it with. A life-cycle assessment also estimated potential environmental advantages over some conventional textiles—but the study did not establish a quantified reduction in fashion’s emissions or prove that the material is ready for commercial clothing.
What the researchers made
The MIT team turned polyethylene (PE) powder into thin fibers by melt extrusion, then combined the fibers into yarn and wove fabric on an industrial loom. PE is a thermoplastic polymer commonly used in plastic bags. The work demonstrated fibers, yarn and woven fabric—not a recycling process that converts used bags directly into finished garments.

During extrusion, MIT reported, the fiber surfaces became slightly oxidized and weakly attracted water. Gaps between fibers in the yarn acted as small capillaries, helping water move through the material. The team modeled fiber dimensions and arrangements to optimize the yarn before weaving it.
How it performed against other fabrics
In the reported laboratory comparisons, strips of the PE fabric wicked water faster than the cotton, nylon and polyester samples. The fabric also evaporated water faster than those comparison samples. These results describe tested fabric strips; they do not establish how a finished garment would perform in everyday wear, across different constructions, or after long-term use.

The water-attracting behavior weakened with repeated wetting. In experiments described by MIT, friction or ultraviolet exposure restored some of that ability. Research scientist Svetlana Boriskina summarized the friction approach this way: “You can refresh the material by rubbing it against itself, and that way it maintains its wicking ability.” The finding is a reported study result, not independent testing of commercial garments.
What the environmental assessment does—and does not—show
The researchers used a life-cycle assessment tool commonly used in the textile industry. MIT’s account says their model estimated lower life-cycle environmental impact for PE textiles than for cotton and nylon textiles, and lower production energy needs than for cotton and polyester textiles. The team pointed to factors including PE’s lower melting temperature, production-related factors, dry coloration and the possibility of lower washing and drying energy.

The assessment is an estimate based on a model, not a measured change in the fashion industry’s total emissions. MIT’s account gives no single quantified greenhouse-gas reduction, and it does not establish that replacing conventional textiles with PE would cut emissions by a particular amount. The comparison axes also differ: the stated life-cycle impact comparison is with cotton and nylon, while the production-energy comparison is with cotton and polyester. Those claims should not be collapsed into a universal ranking of fabrics.
The circularity proposal has limits, too. PE can be melted, and the researchers proposed recovering and reusing it. But the work does not demonstrate a commercial-scale system to collect, sort and recycle garments made from this material. MIT says PE could potentially come from recycled material; it does not establish that the prototype used post-consumer plastic bags.

Dry coloring and possible uses
The team mixed colored particles into PE powder before extrusion, producing colored fibers without traditional wet dyeing. Boriskina described the proposed end-of-life option as follows: “We can color polyethylene fibers in a completely dry fashion, and at the end of their life cycle, we could melt down, centrifuge, and recover the particles to use again.” This is a research approach and proposed recovery route, not proof of an industrial recycling capability.
MIT said the team was exploring lightweight, passively cooling athletic apparel, military attire and possible spacesuit applications. These are prospective uses, not confirmed products available to buy. Materials scientist Shirley Meng of the University of California at San Diego, commenting on the paper, said: “Though a surprising finding, I think the design of experiments and the data are quite convincing.”

What to take from the result
- Promising performance: The tested PE fabric wicked and evaporated water faster than the particular cotton, nylon and polyester samples in the study.
- Potential environmental benefits: The life-cycle assessment estimated advantages in specified comparisons, but did not quantify a sector-wide emissions cut.
- Recycling remains a proposal: Melt recovery and reuse are possible directions for a thermoplastic material; a commercial garment collection and recycling system was not demonstrated.
- No established clothing product: The work supports a research material and prospective applications, not a claim that equivalent apparel is commercially available.
