The claim that Elon Musk is “back working with the U.S. government” is not established by the available official record: the U.S. Government Accountability Office says the White House reported that he left his senior-advisor position in May 2025, and the report does not establish a later return. The clearer shareholder issue is that SpaceX earns a material share of its revenue from federal agencies and says the government has broad powers over its contracts. Those facts create possible business risks, not proof of misconduct or a prediction that the stock will fall.
What is known about Musk’s government role?
In its 2026 report, the GAO describes Musk as a former senior advisor to the President and says he “separated from his position in May 2025, according to the White House.” The report also says it could not fully describe some positions, including Musk’s. It therefore documents the reported departure but does not settle whether he later had informal contact or advisory activity. The evidence here does not substantiate the title’s claim that he has returned to government work.

Why federal business matters to SpaceX shareholders
SpaceX’s 2026 offering disclosure says approximately one-fifth of its 2025 revenue was attributable to U.S. federal agencies. It names NASA, the Department of War, the General Services Administration and intelligence agencies among its federal customers. The disclosed work includes launch services, spacecraft development, satellite deployment and AI products.

A material customer relationship can support revenue, but it also means changes to government demand or contracting decisions could matter to results.

What powers does the government have over SpaceX contracts?
SpaceX’s offering disclosure describes several forms of discretion available to the U.S. government. The company says the government may:
- Declare SpaceX ineligible for new contracts.
- Terminate existing contracts for convenience, without advance notice.
- Reduce the scope or value of existing contracts.
- Audit contract-related costs and fees, including allocated indirect costs.
- Revoke required security clearances.
These are risks the company identifies in its offering materials, not evidence that the government has taken any of these actions. If one did occur, the effect would depend on the contracts involved, the work’s timing and whether SpaceX could replace the revenue or capacity elsewhere. The disclosure also warns that failure to meet federal contracting requirements could lead to penalties, suspension, debarment or lost business.

What the financial figures do—and do not—show
The Associated Press reported on June 3, 2026, that SpaceX’s offering filing showed $18.7 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in operating losses for 2025. Those are figures reported from the company filing; they do not show that federal revenue caused the operating loss.

In its August 4, 2026, second-quarter results release, SpaceX reported $7.8 billion in revenue and a $541 million net loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company also said it had more than $6 billion in multiyear U.S. government contracts for Starshield. The quarterly figures and contract value provide context for the scale and mix of the business, but one quarter and a company-reported contract total do not establish future earnings or share performance.

Could this become trouble for SpaceX stock?
Yes, in the conditional sense that federal customers and government-controlled contract terms create potential exposure. A loss of eligibility, cancellation or reduction of important work, a clearance decision, tougher compliance costs or a change in political conditions could add uncertainty to SpaceX’s revenue outlook. The size of any effect would depend on the contracts and the company’s ability to offset the change.
But the evidence does not establish that political ties secured particular awards, that a contract has been improperly granted, or that Musk has returned to a government role. Scrutiny can raise reputational or oversight questions; it is not itself proof of misconduct or a demonstrated change in awards. Nor do the disclosed risks establish a valuation, a likely stock-price direction or an investment recommendation.
