Disney’s February 2024 announcement was a $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games alongside a multiyear collaboration—not an announcement that Disney bought, or could have bought, all of Epic. A 2026 report quotes Disney executive Dana Walden referring to serious questions about an investment and equity stake, but the brief quote does not establish that an outright acquisition was offered, negotiated, or feasible.
What Disney and Epic announced in 2024
On February 7, 2024, Disney said it would invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games for an equity stake and work with Epic on a multiyear project. Disney described a new games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite: an open, persistent, social experience where users could play, watch, shop, engage with Disney stories and characters, and create and share experiences. The announcement named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar, and said the experience would use Unreal Engine and interoperate with Fortnite. These were announced ambitions; the release does not establish that every described feature launched.

In an October 2, 2026 report, Gameranx quoted Disney CCO and President Dana Walden saying: “It was pretty obvious that we had very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake. Those are not the conversations we’re having right now. We have a great partnership and a number of launches coming up in the next two years that are going to demonstrate the value of this partnership.” Gameranx’s report

The report does not provide the full interview transcript or the surrounding question. Walden’s quoted words refer to questions about “an investment and an equity stake”; they do not say Disney could have bought Epic outright. Without the interview’s full context, it is not clear what those questions concerned. The available record therefore does not establish that a full acquisition was offered, seriously negotiated, or within Disney’s reach.
Why Disney said it invested
On Disney’s February 7, 2024 Q1 FY2024 earnings call, CEO Bob Iger framed the deal as a way to deepen the company’s presence in games. He pointed to younger audiences spending substantial screen time gaming and to Disney’s experience with its characters in Fortnite. His vision for a Disney world connected to Fortnite included playing and creating games, watching, interacting, and potentially shopping. He described the investment as a way to strengthen the partnership while limiting Disney’s risk. Disney’s Q1 FY2024 earnings-call transcript

How the investment differs from buying Epic
| Question | Announced equity investment and collaboration | Hypothetical full acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and control | Disney announced an equity stake; the announcement did not state its percentage or describe full ownership. | Would mean buying the company, but the reviewed sources give no proposed terms. |
| Capital committed | Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake. | Cost and financing are not stated in the available sources. |
| Operating and integration risk | Iger said the investment would strengthen the partnership while limiting Disney’s risk. | How much risk Disney would bear, and how integration might work, are not established. |
| Access to Fortnite and Unreal Engine | The companies announced a collaborative universe connected to Fortnite and powered by Unreal Engine. | The sources do not describe what additional access or control a purchase would provide. |
| Financial outcome | The announcement describes the investment and project, but does not provide a basis here for evaluating returns. | No acquisition price, terms, or credible financial comparison is available in the cited material. |
The distinction matters: an equity stake can give an investor a financial interest without making it the owner of the company. The available sources do not supply enough information to calculate what a whole-company purchase would have cost or to conclude that it was a realistic alternative.

What the cited figures can—and cannot—show
- $1.5 billion: Disney’s announced investment for an equity stake in Epic Games in 2024.
- More than 100 million active players and creators: Disney’s figure for Fortnite in its February 7, 2024 partnership announcement.
- More than 15.3 million concurrent players: Disney’s figure for Fortnite’s Marvel Nexus War with Galactus live event.
- $28.7 billion: Epic’s reported valuation after its April 2021 funding round. That is historical context, not an estimate of Epic’s value when Disney announced its 2024 investment and not evidence of an acquisition offer. Epic Games’ 2021 funding announcement
Disney’s 2024 announcement does not provide an independently verified Epic valuation at the time of the deal. Comparing the $1.5 billion investment directly with Epic’s 2021 valuation would not establish the price of a hypothetical acquisition.

The primary deal announcement establishes an equity investment and a collaboration; the reported Walden quote establishes that she referred to serious questions about an investment and equity stake. Neither source establishes that Disney could have acquired Epic outright or explains why a full acquisition did not happen. The available sources also do not verify the current launch status of every element of the announced Disney-Fortnite experience.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device.
