The films showed a magnetic transition near 88 K, making them a potential platform for studying Kitaev-type physics—not a demonstrated quantum spin liquid or a quantum-computing component.
What did the researchers make?
In a paper published in Physical Review Materials, researchers report that doping NaSbO3 with 4% cobalt stabilized a honeycomb arrangement of edge-sharing CoO6 octahedra within an ilmenite matrix. Magnetic measurements and first-principles calculations support the interpretation that local motifs containing Co2+ (3d7) form in the films. The proposed local structure is significant because honeycomb arrangements of magnetic ions are studied as settings for unusual magnetic interactions.
The study appeared as volume 10, article 054418, on 22 May 2026. The American Physical Society paper record lists Hao-Bo Li and Hidekazu Tanaka among the authors.
What magnetic behavior was observed?
The magnetic measurements found a ferromagnetic-like transition near 88 K. The paper abstract also suggests that interlayer dipolar interaction may lead to antiferromagnetic coupling between nearest layers. These statements concern different aspects of the system: a ferromagnetic-like measured response and a proposed coupling between layers. They should not be collapsed into a claim that the entire film is simply ferromagnetic.

Why could cobalt matter for quantum-materials research?
Kitaev honeycomb magnets are investigated as candidate systems for unusual quantum magnetic states, including quantum spin liquids. Much prior work in this area has focused on materials containing rarer metals such as ruthenium and iridium. In a University of Osaka report hosted by SciTechDaily, lead author Hao-Bo Li described the study’s question: “We asked whether cobalt, one of the most common transition metals on Earth, could be made to form the same honeycomb structure and display the same intriguing physics.”
The answer so far is a cobalt-based thin-film platform with a reported honeycomb motif and a measurable magnetic signal. It gives researchers another material to investigate as they study Kitaev-type magnetism; it does not establish that cobalt reproduces every relevant property of ruthenium- or iridium-based candidates.

Does this material host a quantum spin liquid?
No quantum spin liquid has been demonstrated in this material. The study presents the cobalt-doped film as a platform for future exploration, not as a confirmed spin-liquid state. A magnetic transition, even one relevant to a proposed honeycomb structure, is not by itself proof of a quantum spin liquid. Nor do the reported results show a usable quantum-computing component or a manufacturing process for quantum devices.
Is it actually a cheaper route?
Potentially, but the reported work does not quantify a cost advantage. The University of Osaka report frames cobalt as a common, comparatively accessible alternative to rarer metals used in related research. Neither that report nor the APS abstract provides comparative prices, supply-chain analysis, a production-cost model, or evidence that this particular film can be made at scale. “Cheaper” is therefore a possibility motivating interest in the material, not a measured outcome of the study.

Hao-Bo Li said in the news report that cobalt is “relatively cheap, widely available, and already used in semiconductor manufacturing.” That observation does not establish that this cobalt-doped NaSbO3 film is compatible with semiconductor production or economical to manufacture. The same report’s suggestion that the approach could eventually support practical quantum-computing components is a future outlook, not a demonstrated result.

The useful next question is whether the reported structure and magnetic behavior can be characterized and controlled well enough to test specific predictions about Kitaev-type interactions and possible quantum states. Comparisons with other candidate materials would also need evidence across factors such as magnetic-ion abundance and price, interaction strength, crystal quality, controllability, and sample-production feasibility. The published claims summarized here do not supply comparative data on those measures.

For now, cobalt’s importance is as a potentially more accessible ingredient in a research platform: a 4%-doped NaSbO3 film with local CoO6 honeycomb motifs and a reported transition near 88 K. Whether that platform yields a spin liquid, a practical cost advantage, or a device application remains open.
The University of Osaka report hosted by SciTechDaily provides the authors’ broader context and outlook; the experimental claims are reported in the Physical Review Materials article.
