Trials on naturally contaminated carcasses in real processing settings are still needed.
What the 2026 study found
The peer-reviewed paper, “One light to rule them all: photodynamic inactivation of diverse Campylobacter,” was published in Microbiology on 5 October 2026. Researchers affiliated with the University of Reading and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) tested 64 field isolates from UK poultry surveillance programmes. The isolates represented three Campylobacter species and a range of antibiotic-resistance profiles; all were similarly susceptible to the treatment. Read the paper in Microbiology.

The team also subjected bacteria to 15 repeat laboratory exposures and detected no increase in tolerance. This describes the result in those isolates and that assay; it does not establish that tolerance could never evolve in broader or prolonged use.

Violet-blue photodynamic inactivation, or VB-PDI, uses 405 nm visible light to activate photosensitizing molecules already present in bacteria. These molecules produce reactive oxygen species at levels that can kill bacterial cells. The approach does not require direct physical contact with the bacteria or an added chemical, according to the University of Reading’s account.

The proposed application is treatment of poultry carcasses at stages of food processing. That is a potential use, not a description of an established commercial system: the study tested bacterial isolates in the laboratory, not a production line.
What the contamination estimate means
The University of Reading says that if treatment reduced carcass contamination by a factor of 100, the proportion of highly contaminated carcasses reaching retail could fall from around one in 10 to around one in 50. This is a conditional estimate, not a measured change in retail chicken or food-poisoning cases. It depends on achieving the assumed reduction on carcasses, which has not yet been demonstrated in real processing settings. See the University of Reading’s 6 October 2026 account.

How this differs from earlier raw-chicken light research
A separate 2012 laboratory study used high-intensity 395±5 nm near-UV/visible light—not the 405 nm VB-PDI protocol used in the 2026 isolate study. Researchers treated experimentally inoculated, skinless chicken fillets from a distance of 3 cm. The reported reductions in Campylobacter jejuni were 2.21 log10 CFU/g after one minute and 2.62 log10 CFU/g after five minutes; ten minutes did not significantly increase the reduction. The study also reported that no C. jejuni was recovered from treated stainless-steel or cutting-board surfaces after an initial inoculum of 2–4 log10 CFU/cm². See the 2012 study abstract.
Those results concern a different wavelength and protocol, experimentally contaminated food and surfaces, and laboratory measurements of bacterial counts. They do not validate the newer method on commercial lines or show that either method reduces human illness.

Is the treatment available now?
The cited 2026 study and University of Reading report do not identify a consumer product or a verified commercial supplier. The university says further evaluation on contaminated meat and trials in real processing settings are needed before commercial rollout. The evidence also does not establish regulatory approval, cost-effectiveness, or performance and food-contact safety across processing conditions. Household blue LEDs should not be assumed to reproduce the studied treatment.
What chicken buyers and cooks should do now
Until processing uses are validated, ordinary kitchen precautions remain the practical way to reduce risk. Raw chicken can carry Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Clostridium perfringens; illness can follow undercooking or cross-contamination from raw chicken or its juices.

- Do not wash raw chicken; splashing can spread germs.
- Wash hands and clean surfaces after handling raw chicken.
- Use a food thermometer to check that chicken reaches 165°F internally, as recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A thermometer checks cooking temperature; it does not decontaminate raw chicken or perform the experimental light treatment. Read the CDC’s chicken-safety guidance.
Why the research matters—and what remains unknown
The University of Reading’s 6 October 2026 report describes Campylobacter as causing hundreds of thousands of UK cases each year, with an estimated annual cost of £700 million in healthcare and lost productivity. Those are contextual burden estimates, not results of the light experiment. The study’s practical promise is that a non-chemical treatment affected diverse tested isolates, including isolates with varied antibiotic-resistance profiles. Whether it can reliably lower contamination on carcasses, fit processing operations, and ultimately reduce illness remains to be shown.
