Could an Electrical Technique Help Identify Signs of Life in Space?

Potentially—but it is not a life detector yet. A 2026 University of Osaka study used electrical signals from individual amino-acid molecules to distinguish their identities and mirror-image forms. Tests on meteorite and desert-soil extracts suggest the method could contribute to future astrobiology instruments, but the work remains a laboratory demonstration, not evidence of extraterrestrial life.

What does the electrical technique measure?

The method sends individual molecules through a tiny gap between gold nanowires. As each molecule passes through the nanogap, quantum tunneling produces an electrical-current waveform. The researchers used those waveforms with artificial intelligence to classify amino acids and distinguish their two mirror-image forms, called enantiomers: L and D.

That is a measurement of molecular signals, not a direct reading of organisms. Detecting amino acids—or identifying an imbalance between their L and D forms—does not by itself establish that a sample contains life. The method and its experiments are described in the 2026 Nature Communications paper, “Chiral discrimination of amino acids in meteorite and desert soil extracts via single-molecule nanogap conductance.”

Why might amino-acid chirality matter in the search for life?

Mirror-image molecules can have the same chemical composition but different spatial arrangements. On Earth, biological systems strongly favor L-amino acids, while sugars are biased toward D-forms. By contrast, many abiotic chemical processes produce roughly equal amounts of both forms. A measured excess of one enantiomer could therefore be a possible biosignature—a clue worth investigating.

It is not proof. Abiotic processes can also produce enantiomeric excess, so chirality would need to be interpreted alongside other evidence and the sample’s chemical context. The distinction is important: the technique may help characterize a potentially informative pattern, but it cannot label that pattern “life.”

What accuracy did the researchers report?

The paper reports different results for different experiments. The figures below are not interchangeable: the highest figure concerns distinguishing individual enantiomers, not identifying life or classifying every complex sample.

Test Reported result What it means
Individual L- and D-amino-acid forms Over 80% accuracy Distinguishing the two forms of individual amino acids in the reported experiment.
Blind test of 39 amino acids Over 50% accuracy Identifying both molecular identity and chirality; the paper reports performance above random chance.
Mixtures of four amino acids Over 66% accuracy Quantifying mixtures with different chiral compositions.
Natural extracts Targeted panel of 11 amino acids Comparing selected target assignments with major compositional features observed by LC–MS; this is not a whole-sample or life-detection accuracy score.

The individual-enantiomer result was also described by lead author Takahito Oshiro in the University of Osaka’s 5 October 2026 release: “By combining our nanogap tunneling technique with artificial intelligence, we were able to distinguish between the L- and D-forms of amino acids with over 80% accuracy.” The release is available from the University of Osaka.

What did the meteorite and soil tests show?

The team tested extracts from the Murchison meteorite, which fell in Australia, and soil from Chile’s Atacama Desert. Using a targeted panel of 11 amino acids, the electrical method captured major compositional features also observed with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Senior author Masateru Taniguchi said, “We analyzed natural samples from the Murchison meteorite in Australia and soil samples from the Atacama Desert in Chile,” according to the university release.

  • LEARNING VALUE: Perfect STEM project for understanding basic electronics, radio technology, and circuit assembly principles
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Operates on battery power (batteries not included), features multiple control buttons and built-in speaker for clear sound output

The comparison is encouraging but bounded. The study reports correspondence in major features, not that the electrical method outperformed LC–MS or replaced it across analytical tasks. The paper also notes background signals and uncertainty for low-abundance targets; confidence filtering helped distinguish stronger assignments from less certain events. These issues matter especially when interpreting faint signals in a chemically complex sample.

How does it compare with conventional analysis?

The approaches measure samples differently, and the reported comparison does not establish a universal winner.

Consideration Nanogap electrical method LC–MS in the reported comparison
Signal measured Electrical-current waveforms generated as individual molecules pass through a nanogap. Ensemble analytical measurements used as a reference for major compositional features in the natural-extract tests.
Chirality and mixtures Study tests included L/D discrimination, a blind identity-and-chirality test, and four-amino-acid mixtures. The cited study establishes comparison of major compositional features, but does not provide a directly comparable set of LC–MS chirality-performance figures.
Natural samples Tested extracts with a targeted panel of 11 amino acids; background and low-abundance signals remain relevant. Major features observed by LC–MS corresponded with those captured in the electrical analysis.
Deployment Laboratory demonstration; a space mission deployment is not reported. The study uses LC–MS as an analytical comparison; it does not establish a mission-readiness comparison.

Could it be used on a spacecraft?

Possibly as a basis for future compact instrumentation, but the study does not demonstrate a flight-ready sensor or an operating instrument on another world. The experiments show a laboratory technique applied to selected amino acids and terrestrial or meteorite-derived extracts. They do not establish performance under spaceflight conditions, across the full chemical diversity of an extraterrestrial sample, or as a complete biosignature decision system.

The University of Osaka release, published 5 October 2026, frames the work as a potential way to help identify signs of life in space. That is a future possibility, not a report that the team has detected extraterrestrial life. The publication record identifies the study as a 2026 Nature Communications article, volume 17, article 10274; metadata is also listed by EurekAlert!.
