There is no evidence in the available material that AI-made or AI-assisted ports have reduced Nintendo’s or Sony’s remaster sales. Sony has described AI in development workflows and player discovery, not AI autonomously converting older games into commercial ports. The revenue threat is a plausible question to investigate—not an established trend.
What does “AI game port” mean?
A port adapts a game for a different platform. An “AI game port” could mean a game whose conversion work uses AI tools, or an attempt to have AI generate much of the conversion. Those are different claims: AI assisting a developer with a task does not mean AI created the port, and neither phrase establishes that a product is authorized or commercially available.

The distinction matters because the public examples in this case concern AI used within development and platform services, not a disclosed AI-generated port of a Nintendo or Sony game.

Can AI make a port of an old game?
Sony’s May 8, 2026 corporate strategy says its studios use AI tools to automate repetitive work in software engineering, quality assurance, 3D modelling and animation. It also describes AI as supporting platform efficiency, personalization and player discovery. That is evidence of AI-assisted work, but the statement does not say that AI independently converts older games into ports.

Sony Group President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said, “AI is not a replacement for artists or creators.” The statement describes Sony’s position; it does not establish what AI can or cannot do across the industry. The available disclosures simply do not provide a commercial AI-port example to assess.
Would an AI port replace a remaster?
That depends on more than how quickly a version can be produced. A useful comparison would ask whether the release is authorized; which platforms it supports; how well it preserves the original’s look, behavior and compatibility; whether it adds content or quality-of-life features; what support it receives; what it costs; and whether players actually buy it.
Those are evaluation criteria, not a measured comparison between existing products: the cited material does not establish an AI-port release that can be set against an authorized remaster. Even if AI reduced some production work, that alone would not show that publishers would stop remastering games or that players would choose an AI-assisted alternative.

What do Sony and Nintendo actually say about the risk?
Sony’s releases extend franchises across formats
Sony’s 2025 Corporate Report presents remakes and remasters as part of a broader strategy for extending intellectual property through game releases, PC versions, television, merchandising and location-based entertainment. It says The Last of Us began in 2013, that The Last of Us Part I received a ground-up PS5 remake in 2022, and that The Last of Us Part II was remastered for PS5 in 2024; PC versions of both games were available.
Sony reported more than 37 million cumulative sales for The Last of Us franchise. That is a franchise-wide total, not sales or revenue for either remaster. The report therefore shows that remasters remain part of Sony’s IP strategy, but it does not establish their individual profitability or exposure to AI-port competition.
Nintendo’s cited concern is piracy
Nintendo’s UK legal FAQ says piracy threatens Nintendo and developers that depend on legitimate sales. The page addresses piracy generally; it does not identify AI ports as a separate threat or say that AI-assisted ports are piracy or infringement. Those categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

Are authorized remakes and remasters still being announced?
Yes, but announcements show publisher activity—not sales, margins or consumer preference. Bandai Namco announced Tales of Eternia Remastered for October 16, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, with visual and quality-of-life options. As of October 4, 2026, that announced release date is still in the future.
Sega/Atlus announced Persona 4 Revival, a full remake planned for 2027 on multiple platforms. Neither announcement demonstrates how well the title will sell or whether AI alternatives are taking demand away.

No direct evidence is established here. There is no title-level sales comparison, company disclosure, case study or credible causal estimate showing that an AI-assisted or AI-generated port displaced an authorized Nintendo or Sony remaster and reduced its revenue.

A July 2026 arXiv preprint offers relevant but limited context: its abstract describes a Steam metadata snapshot of 93,073 titles and a dataset of 200,000 interactions while analyzing possible growth in game supply associated with AI-assisted production. Those are study inputs, not a count of AI games or ports across the market. The paper concerns supply and discovery, not Nintendo or Sony remaster sales, and it should be read as early research rather than settled evidence of substitution.
To establish the revenue claim, evidence would need to connect a specific AI-assisted alternative to an authorized remaster and show that it changed purchases or earnings—not merely that AI tools exist, game supply might grow, or a remaster was released. Until that connection is demonstrated, the headline’s threat is a hypothesis, not a reported loss.
