That established population shows that this desert-adapted species can find food and water in part of the state. It does not prove that African antelopes as a group can tolerate every New Mexico winter, withstand severe drought, or remain secure as temperatures and precipitation patterns change.
What is actually known about African antelopes in New Mexico?
The clearest evidence comes from the National Park Service (NPS), which describes an established population of African oryx, identified as gemsbok (Oryx gazella), on and around White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico. The animals are native to the Kalahari Desert. NPS says 95 oryx were released between 1969 and 1977, and that thousands live on the missile range today. The agency’s page was last updated August 27, 2023, so “thousands” should be read as the NPS’s page-current description, not as a new 2026 census.

Annual hunts began in 1974 to help control and stabilize the population. NPS also reports that a 67-mile (108-kilometer) boundary fence was built in 1996 to keep oryx from entering White Sands National Park. The fence and hunting program matter because persistence is not the same as ecological harmlessness: the oryx are an introduced species, and NPS identifies concerns about effects on native plants and animals.

Why gemsbok can persist in the southern New Mexico desert
Food is available during ordinary conditions
NPS states that “The success of the oryx in New Mexico is due in part to the abundance of food.” Its list includes desert grasses, yucca, buffalo gourds and mesquite bean pods. Those plants provide a local forage base without requiring the animals to depend on irrigated pasture or supplemental feed.
Gemsbok are not surviving because the landscape exactly reproduces the Kalahari. They are surviving because portions of the Chihuahuan Desert provide a combination of browse, grasses, cover and open terrain that meets their needs. Food availability can vary sharply by rainfall, fire, grazing pressure and season, so the existence of forage in one period does not guarantee adequate nutrition in a severe drought.
They reduce their dependence on drinking water
The NPS account says gemsbok can go a long time without drinking water. That is a major advantage in a desert where permanent surface water is scarce. It does not mean the animals require no moisture. They obtain water from plants and still depend on enough productive vegetation to maintain body condition, raise calves and survive prolonged dry periods.
Smithsonian describes similar adaptations in the scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah): tolerance of elevated body temperature, reduced water loss and extraction of moisture from forage. Smithsonian’s species page says these animals may survive months or even years without drinking water by “stripping moisture from the plants they eat in their sparsely vegetated habitats.” That is evidence for desert adaptation in scimitar-horned oryx, not a measured physiological limit for gemsbok.

Predators do not provide the same control as in Africa
NPS says, “In New Mexico, predators like coyotes and mountain lions are not effective at controlling numbers, allowing the oryx to reproduce without restriction.” Lower effective predation can help an introduced population expand, especially when food is available. It also explains why managers use hunting and a boundary fence rather than expecting native predators to regulate the herd.
What drought resistance can—and cannot—tell us
Desert adaptations improve an animal’s odds; they do not make drought irrelevant. Smithsonian lists persistent drought, habitat loss, hunting and loss of forage to livestock grazing among threats to scimitar-horned oryx. The same ecological logic applies when evaluating gemsbok: if grasses, yucca, gourds or mesquite produce less biomass, an animal that rarely drinks still has less energy and moisture to obtain from food.
Drought can affect a population through several pathways:
Recommended Free Tools
- Lower forage quantity: fewer plants mean less energy for maintenance, pregnancy and lactation.
- Lower forage quality: drought-stressed plants may provide less usable nutrition even when some green material remains.
- Delayed recovery: repeated dry years can prevent seed production and shrink perennial plant reserves.
- Competition: livestock and native herbivores may consume the same drought-limited plants.
- Young-animal survival: calves and juveniles generally have less physiological reserve when food quality falls.
Therefore, “can survive drought” should be interpreted as “has traits that can reduce water stress under suitable habitat conditions,” not “is immune to drought-driven population decline.”

Can gemsbok withstand New Mexico winters?
The available evidence confirms survival in southern New Mexico but does not establish a numerical lower-temperature threshold for gemsbok. Neither the NPS account nor the cited species material states the coldest air temperature, wind-chill exposure or snow conditions that wild New Mexico gemsbok can tolerate.
A peer-reviewed reference chapter surfaced in general captive-care guidance says that most desert and tropical species need indoor housing during the cold season in colder regions. It discusses shelter, windbreaks and frostbite risk. Those recommendations are for managed animals whose keepers can provide protection; they are not a wild-survival experiment and cannot be converted into a gemsbok cutoff such as “below X degrees Fahrenheit.”
Winter risk is also more complicated than the thermometer reading. Wind exposure, wet coats, frozen forage, snow cover, access to sheltered terrain and the animal’s body condition all influence cold stress. Southern New Mexico contains different elevations and microclimates, so conditions on the missile range cannot automatically be generalized to the entire state, especially high mountains or areas with persistent snow.

The strongest defensible conclusion is narrow: gemsbok have persisted through the winters occurring in their established southern New Mexico range. The sources do not show whether they could establish themselves in colder northern or high-elevation regions, nor do they provide a species-specific minimum temperature.

What does the scimitar-horned oryx example add?
Scimitar-horned oryx are a useful illustration of desert physiology, but they must remain a separate example. Smithsonian reports that they graze mainly at night, rest in shade during daytime heat, conserve water and can tolerate an internal body temperature of 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius). That figure is an internal body temperature for scimitar-horned oryx—not ambient air temperature and not a winter benchmark for gemsbok.
The behavior and physiology show how an arid-land antelope can shift activity and manage water loss. They do not establish that every African antelope has the same adaptations. African antelopes include species from forests, grasslands, wetlands and highlands, with widely different coats, diets, body sizes and thermal limits. A comparison that treats “African antelope” as one climate type would therefore be misleading.

The 2025 New Mexico State Wildlife Action Plan identifies climate-related pressures such as drought and intense heat affecting southwestern riparian systems. Its excerpt does not project future survival for African gemsbok or any other named antelope. It would be an overstatement to turn that statewide pressure description into a quantitative forecast for the White Sands population.

- More frequent or longer drought: likely reduces the forage base on which water conservation depends.
- More intense heat: may increase daytime cooling and shade requirements, even for a heat-adapted species.
- Warmer winters: could reduce cold stress in some locations, but do not offset food shortages or habitat loss.
- More variable rainfall: can create short pulses of forage followed by severe deficits, complicating population management.
- Changes in plant communities: may alter whether the specific grasses, yucca, gourds and mesquite foods remain abundant.
Climate effects also interact with fencing, hunting, livestock grazing, wildfire and development. A warmer average temperature alone cannot predict whether a population will grow or decline.

Why persistence is not automatically a conservation success
The White Sands population demonstrates environmental tolerance, but it is also a management issue. NPS classifies the oryx as exotic at White Sands National Park, describes the boundary fence used to keep them out and reports that local predators do not effectively control their numbers. Large herbivores can alter plant use, compete with native animals and move across administrative boundaries.
This distinction matters when interpreting the phrase “survive.” A species may be able to survive—and even increase—while creating ecological costs in a place where it did not evolve. Population control, fencing and monitoring are responses to that situation, not evidence that the species belongs in every New Mexico habitat.

A careful framework for evaluating another African antelope
If a different species is being considered, use four separate tests rather than assuming gemsbok is representative:
- Native climate and habitat: identify whether the species evolved in desert, savanna, woodland, wetland or high-elevation environments.
- Local food and moisture: check whether its actual diet is available through dry seasons, not merely during a wet-year flush.
- Cold-season exposure: examine shelter, wind, snow, frozen ground and the animal’s condition; do not substitute a captive-care recommendation for a wild threshold.
- Evidence quality: distinguish a documented free-ranging population from a zoo observation, a physiological study or a general husbandry statement.
Using that framework, gemsbok have direct New Mexico population evidence, while scimitar-horned oryx contribute species-specific information about heat and water conservation. The available material does not support a ranked list of African antelopes by New Mexico winter tolerance.
Bottom line
Gemsbok already survive in southern New Mexico, where food plants, low dependence on drinking water and limited predator control have allowed an introduced population to persist. That is compelling evidence for this species in this region—not a blanket answer for African antelopes.
Drought adaptation can fail when forage disappears, and heat tolerance does not establish a safe winter minimum. The reviewed sources provide no numerical gemsbok cold threshold and no species-specific projection for how future New Mexico climate change will affect the population. The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: yes for documented southern-New-Mexico gemsbok persistence; unknown for broader species, colder parts of the state and future climate scenarios.
