Possibly in a very specific warm, wet refuge—but there is no evidence that a Vasuki-sized snake could survive broadly across the modern world. The extinct Vasuki indicus was estimated at 11–15 metres (about 36–49 feet) long. A 2024 study linked a snake of that size to a modeled mean annual temperature of 27.2–28.6 °C, similar to the persistently hot tropical conditions reconstructed for its Eocene habitat.
That result is a climate inference, not a laboratory test of the animal. Vasuki’s exact metabolism, cold tolerance, diet, reproduction, population needs and seasonal limits are unknown. A modern wetland that stayed warm enough and supplied abundant prey might theoretically support comparable physiology, but the fossil evidence cannot identify a present-day location where the species would certainly live.

What was Vasuki indicus?
Vasuki indicus was an extinct snake described in 2024 from partial vertebral fossils found in a lignite-bearing succession in Kutch, Gujarat, India. The rocks date to the early Middle Eocene (Lutetian), approximately 47 million years ago. The official Indian government account reports 27 well-preserved vertebrae and a broad, cylindrical body, supporting the reconstruction of a robust giant snake.

The study by Debajit Datta and Sunil Bajpai in Scientific Reports gives an estimated body length of 11–15 metres. An Associated Press report in 2024 relayed a researcher estimate of up to 1,000 kilograms, but that mass figure is also approximate. The fossils establish extraordinary size; they do not provide a weighing scale, a complete body outline or a record of the animal’s living behavior.

The surrounding deposit represents a warm, swampy ecosystem. Fossils found nearby include catfish, turtles, crocodiles and primitive whales. Datta described Vasuki, given its large size, as a slow-moving ambush predator that would subdue prey by constriction. Those clues indicate a productive wetland food web, but they do not reveal exactly which animals it hunted or how often it fed.
What temperature would a snake this large need?
The central thermal result is a model-based estimate. The Vasuki study associates survival of an 11–15-metre snake with a mean annual temperature of 27.2–28.6 °C. The reconstructed Eocene setting was about 28 °C, roughly 0.7–2.1 °C warmer than the present-day tropical mean cited in the study.
“Mean annual temperature” is an average over a year. It does not mean every day was exactly that warm, nor does it specify the coldest night, the length of a cool season or the temperature of the water where the snake rested. Averages are useful for comparing ancient and modern climates, but a large ectotherm could be affected by short cold periods that disappear inside an annual average.
Snakes are ectothermic: their body temperature and activity depend heavily on environmental heat. Jason Head, a Cambridge paleontologist quoted by the Associated Press, summarized the constraint this way: “These snakes are giant cold-blooded animals,” and “A snake requires higher temperatures” to grow into large sizes. The quotation explains why the study treats exceptional warmth as a requirement for exceptional body size; it does not establish a precise modern threshold for Vasuki itself.

Could a Vasuki-sized snake live somewhere today?
The defensible answer is conditional. A population with Vasuki-like physiology might be possible in a consistently warm tropical wetland, but several requirements would have to be met at the same time.
| Requirement | What the fossil evidence suggests | What remains unknown today |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal regime | The modeled climate associated with an 11–15-metre snake was persistently very warm, with a mean annual temperature of 27.2–28.6 °C. | The snake’s minimum safe temperature, preferred body temperature, tolerance of cold snaps and need for basking sites are not known. |
| Habitat permanence | Vasuki lived in a warm, swampy Eocene environment. | It is unknown how much open water, dense cover, dry-season refuge and nesting or birthing habitat a population required. |
| Prey biomass | Catfish, turtles, crocodiles and primitive whales show that the ancient wetland supported substantial aquatic and terrestrial fauna. | Its exact diet, feeding frequency, prey size and ability to switch prey have not been established. |
| Body-size evidence | Twenty-seven vertebrae and a broad cylindrical body support a giant, robust reconstruction. | The partial skeleton makes the 11–15-metre estimate tentative, and the reported mass is approximate. |
| Seasonality | The paleoclimate model supplies an annual average rather than a modern weather record. | Modern seasonal cooling, drought, floods and heat extremes could affect growth, hunting and reproduction. |
| Population viability | Fossils show that a giant snake existed in one ancient ecosystem. | There are no direct data on territory size, mating, juvenile survival, disease or competition. |
Under a favorable scenario, the animal would need more than a hot annual average. It would need a large, connected wetland that remained productive through seasonal changes, delivered enough prey to sustain a slow-growing giant and offered places to regulate body temperature. If any of those conditions failed repeatedly, an individual might survive briefly while a breeding population could not.
Why a warm refuge is not the same as survival across today’s climate
Modern climates are not uniform. Tropical regions can contain cool uplands, seasonal wetlands, drought-prone basins and habitats fragmented by development. Even within a warm region, water levels and prey abundance can change sharply between wet and dry seasons. The Vasuki fossils identify a particular ancient environment, not a universal climate envelope for every modern continent.

Habitat loss would be an additional constraint. A giant ambush predator requires space, concealment and a dependable food web. Rivers, marshes and floodplains that are warm enough may still be too small, isolated or heavily altered to support adults and juveniles. Human conflict, pollution, introduced predators and disease are modern pressures for which the fossil record supplies no test.

The ancient prey list also should not be treated as a menu. Catfish, turtles, crocodiles and primitive whales document animals living near the fossil site, but researchers have not identified Vasuki’s preferred prey. A snake could be anatomically capable of constriction yet unable to obtain enough suitable food in a modern wetland.
What the temperature model can—and cannot—prove
The temperature range comes from combining fossil anatomy with paleoclimate modeling. It is best read as a plausible environmental association: snakes of this scale are linked to very warm conditions. It is not a direct physiological experiment in which a living Vasuki was exposed to controlled temperatures.
- No living Vasuki was observed, so there is no measured body temperature, metabolic rate or activity schedule.
- No direct physiological experiment establishes the species’ lower or upper thermal limits.
- The exact diet, growth rate, reproductive cycle and juvenile requirements are unknown.
- The 11–15-metre length estimate is tentative because the fossil series is partial.
- The up-to-1,000-kilogram mass estimate reported by the Associated Press is approximate, not a verified measurement.
These limits do not make the climate inference useless. They define its proper scope. The study can show that the Eocene setting was compatible with a giant ectotherm and that warmth was likely important; it cannot certify that a particular modern swamp would support one.

Individual survival and evolutionary re-evolution are different questions. If a living giant snake already existed, a newly warm refuge might improve its thermal conditions. Recreating a lineage that reaches 11–15 metres would require many generations, inherited variation, sustained selection and a stable ecological opportunity.

Jason Head told the Associated Press: “In theory, it’s possible. But the climate is now warming too quickly for snakes to evolve again to be giants.” The point is about evolutionary timescale, not whether heat favors activity in an existing animal. Modern warming is occurring over a period far shorter than the long evolutionary history that produced Vasuki-like size, while habitats and food webs are being disturbed at the same time.
Warmer weather alone therefore cannot be treated as a mechanism that will manufacture a 50-foot snake. Climate is one condition among many, and evolution cannot simply assemble a giant body plan on demand. A population would also need genetic variation, successful reproduction, abundant prey and enough uninterrupted habitat for selection to operate over many generations.

Vasuki’s published estimate of 11–15 metres places it in the same broad category as the largest snakes known from fossils. However, the upper and lower bounds are tentative, and the evidence available here does not establish a definitive size ranking against another giant snake such as Titanoboa.

One species may be reconstructed from more complete vertebrae, another from different parts of the spine; body length can be estimated with different scaling equations; and mass estimates can vary even more. A claim that Vasuki was “bigger” would require the same measurement standards and comparable completeness of fossil material. The secure conclusion is that Vasuki was exceptionally large, not that its rank among all giant snakes has been settled.

Would a 50-foot snake be possible in today’s climate?
Fifty feet is about 15.2 metres, essentially the top end of Vasuki’s tentative estimate. Physics and physiology do not make such a length automatically impossible in a warm environment: the fossil record shows that a snake of roughly that scale existed under Eocene conditions. The modern question is ecological rather than purely mechanical.
A present-day 50-foot snake would need a climate with sustained warmth, a large and reliable prey base, shelter from seasonal extremes and enough connected habitat for hunting and reproduction. The available evidence does not show that any particular modern ecosystem meets all of those conditions, nor does it reveal whether Vasuki could tolerate today’s seasonal variability. “Possible” therefore means theoretically compatible with a suitable refuge, not demonstrated survival in the wild.
How scientists could narrow the uncertainty
Future discoveries could test the survival question indirectly by improving the animal’s biology and its environment. More complete vertebral series or associated bones could tighten the length and mass estimates. Additional fossils at the same site could clarify prey availability, water depth and habitat structure. Better paleoclimate reconstructions could resolve seasonal conditions instead of relying mainly on an annual average.

Comparative studies of living large snakes might also constrain likely growth, heat exchange and energy demands, but they would remain analogies rather than measurements of Vasuki. Until such evidence exists, the responsible conclusion must keep the uncertainty attached to every number and scenario.
The practical verdict
Vasuki indicus was an approximately 47-million-year-old Indian snake, tentatively estimated at 11–15 metres long. Its fossils come from a warm, swampy ecosystem, and a 2024 climate model associates that body size with mean annual temperatures of 27.2–28.6 °C. Those facts make survival of a Vasuki-like animal conceivable in a persistently warm, productive tropical wetland.
They do not show that the extinct species could live in today’s climate as a whole, identify a modern refuge that would sustain it, or support the idea that global warming will rapidly recreate giant snakes. The strongest answer is therefore conditional: a suitable hot wetland might meet part of the thermal requirement, but seasonality, habitat, prey, reproduction and evolution remain unresolved.
