The 2015 experiment was a proof of concept: its payload was inert beads, not a drug course.
How the polymer pill was designed to work
The concept was intended to address a practical challenge in treatment: patients may forget to take medicines on schedule. Robert Langer of MIT described adherence as a major health problem, noting that people forget to take their drugs.

The researchers combined poly(acryloyl 6-aminocaproic acid) with poly(methacrylic acid co-ethyl acrylate) to make a flexible supramolecular elastomer gel. The reported design goals were for the material to resist digestion in the stomach, remain there while releasing a payload, and dissolve after reaching the intestine.
- A compressed gel ring was placed inside a standard gelatin capsule so it could be swallowed.
- The capsule shell dissolved in the stomach, allowing the gel to expand into a ring.
- The ring was designed to remain in the stomach and release its payload over time.
- After passing into the intestine, the gel was intended to dissolve so the remaining material could move through the digestive tract.
What the pig experiment demonstrated
In the 2015 proof of concept, the researchers embedded polycaprolactone (PCL) beads in the gel ring as a dummy slow-release payload. Chemistry World reported that the capsule opened in a pig’s stomach and the gel expanded into a 3.2 cm ring. The ring remained intact for up to seven days; after the gel dissolved, the PCL beads could travel through the animal’s intestine.

These observations demonstrate a delivery-device prototype behaving as intended in an animal. They do not establish how a medicine would be released, absorbed, or tolerated in a person.
What “the entire drug course in one go” means—and does not mean
The phrase describes the motivating possibility, not a demonstrated treatment. The experiment used beads rather than an active medicine, and it did not show that one dose could safely deliver a complete human course, cure an infection, or prevent antibiotic resistance. The design’s engineering aims—staying in the stomach, releasing a payload over time, and later dissolving—are not evidence of clinical safety or effectiveness.

Gregor Fuhrmann of Imperial College London praised the concept of an elastic polymer that resists stomach conditions but dissolves at intestinal pH. That comment concerns the design idea; it is not a clinical endorsement or proof of benefit.

Evidence stage and what remains unknown
Chemistry World published its report on 27 July 2015, citing S. Zhang et al. in Nature Materials (2015), DOI 10.1038/nmat4355. The reported result is an animal-tested prototype, not a human clinical outcome. The report does not establish approval, availability, or the concept’s current development status.

It also does not provide a direct comparison with other long-acting delivery methods. A meaningful comparison would need to consider where a method delivers its payload, how long and in what pattern it releases it, whether it can carry one or several medicines, and what evidence stage supports it. The pig result alone does not establish that this approach is preferable to other options.
