Yes—but indirectly. A Phobos sample could help determine whether Mars’s two small moons formed from debris blasted off Mars or are asteroids captured by its gravity. That distinction matters because it reveals how the early Mars system evolved. It would not, by itself, provide a complete account of how Mars formed as a planet.
Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is designed to combine spacecraft observations of Phobos and Deimos with laboratory study of material returned from Phobos. JAXA’s stated collection target is more than 10 grams. The sample has not yet been collected, so the origin of the moons—and what it may tell us about early Mars—remains an open question.

What a Phobos sample could actually answer
The immediate scientific question is not “What is Mars made of?” It is “Where did Phobos and Deimos come from?” Two explanations dominate current discussion:

- Capture: the moons began as asteroids from outside the Mars system and were subsequently trapped by Mars’s gravity.
Those alternatives predict different relationships between the moons and Mars. If Phobos contains material chemically and mineralogically consistent with Mars or with debris produced by an impact on Mars, a Mars-related origin would become more plausible. If it instead resembles an asteroid population from beyond Mars, capture would gain support. The meaningful test is the complete combination of sample data, observations of both moons and knowledge of Mars—not a single dramatic measurement.

That is why “help explain how Mars formed” needs a qualification. A result favoring impact debris would constrain models of the early Mars system: the planet already existed, an impact occurred, and orbiting material formed moons. A result favoring capture would indicate that Mars acquired at least some companions from elsewhere in the Solar System. Neither outcome would reconstruct every stage of Mars’s planetary formation.
The two leading origin hypotheses
| Hypothesis | Proposed source of moon material | What a sample could test | How spacecraft observations fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant impact | Debris generated when a celestial body collided with early Mars, later gathered into Phobos and Deimos. | Whether Phobos’s composition and mineralogy are compatible with Mars-related material or impact debris. | Orbital shape, surface properties and compositional maps can show whether the moons look like products of a Mars-centered event. |
| Capture | Asteroids formed elsewhere, described by JAXA as objects from the outer Solar System, later captured by Mars’s gravity. | Whether Phobos more closely matches an asteroid source than Martian or impact-generated material. | Remote measurements can compare Phobos and Deimos and identify characteristics that a returned sample must explain. |
The table describes predictions and evidence categories, not guaranteed diagnostic results. Natural bodies can be altered by impacts, space exposure and surface processes, so researchers must evaluate several lines of evidence together.
Why laboratory material is more valuable than images alone
A spacecraft can survey an entire moon and place measurements in geographic context. It can identify broad compositional differences, map surface units and locate unusual or representative terrain. Those observations are essential for choosing a sampling site and for understanding what the collected grains mean.

A sample also provides a calibration point for orbital instruments. If the laboratory result identifies what a particular surface signature actually represents, scientists can reinterpret measurements from unsampled regions and from Deimos. Conversely, if the sample is unusual, remote maps can show whether it came from a local patch or is representative of much of Phobos.
How JAXA’s MMX mission is intended to work
MMX is a JAXA-led international mission focused on both Martian moons and a planned sample return from Phobos. NASA and the European Space Agency also describe it as an international effort. The mission’s scientific design links observations and sampling rather than treating them as separate projects.
- Survey the moons: MMX will observe Phobos and Deimos to characterize their surfaces and environments.
- Build a compositional map: The MEGANE instrument’s measurements are intended to inform research into Phobos’s origin and surface processes.
- Select a site: Those observations will help identify where a collected sample can answer the origin question while providing geological context.
- Collect material: JAXA states a goal of returning more than 10 grams of Phobos material. The spacecraft carries two material-collection mechanisms. This is a planned target, not a quantity already obtained.
- Return and analyze the sample: Material brought to Earth can undergo detailed laboratory investigation alongside the spacecraft data.
No launch or return date is needed to understand the mission’s scientific purpose, and schedules can change. The crucial point is that MMX is prospective: the origin question remains unresolved until a sample is collected, returned and studied.
What evidence would favor a Mars-related origin?
Composition that fits Mars or impact debris
If Phobos material shares diagnostic chemical and mineralogical characteristics with Mars, that would support the idea that the moon formed from Martian material or from a collision involving Mars. Researchers would still need to model how an impact could produce the observed moon surfaces, but a compatible sample would make a purely unrelated asteroid origin less satisfactory.

Mineralogy consistent with an impact-generated mixture
A giant impact could combine material from Mars and the impacting body. A sample showing a mixture that can be explained by such an event would be significant, especially if the mixture corresponds to patterns seen in remote observations. The interpretation would depend on whether the same mineralogical story explains broad regions of Phobos rather than only a few grains.
Agreement between Phobos, Deimos and orbital maps
MMX’s observations of both moons provide a comparison. If Phobos’s returned material explains its mapped surface signatures and those signatures fit a related origin for Deimos, the impact scenario would gain coherence. If the moons look materially unrelated, scientists would have to account for that difference instead of assuming that both formed together.
What evidence would favor captured asteroids?
An asteroid-like composition
If the sample’s chemistry and mineralogy align more closely with an asteroid population than with Mars, capture would become a stronger explanation. JAXA’s description of the capture hypothesis specifically places the moons among asteroids from the outer Solar System that Mars later acquired gravitationally.

Surface history that does not require Martian debris
Remote observations can reveal whether Phobos’s surface processes and composition are easier to explain as an independent asteroid body. A returned sample could test whether those remote signatures reflect the body’s original material or only later alteration.

A better match to the moons’ combined observations
Capture must explain not only a chemical match but also why Mars has these particular moons and why their observed properties look the way they do. Sample results would therefore be evaluated against orbital and surface data, not in isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How each outcome would change models of early Mars
If impact debris is supported
The early Mars system would be modeled as the aftermath of a major collision capable of placing enough material into orbit to form moons. The sample would help constrain the material involved and provide a real compositional test for simulations of that event. It would strengthen the connection between the moons and Mars’s own early history.
If capture is supported
Models would instead emphasize Mars’s interaction with bodies that formed elsewhere. The moons would be evidence that the young planet’s gravitational environment could acquire and retain passing asteroids. Researchers would then focus on how capture occurred and how the captured bodies evolved on their Martian orbits.
If the result is mixed or ambiguous
Nature may not deliver a simple verdict. A surface sample could be altered, unrepresentative or compatible with more than one scenario. The outcome might narrow the possibilities without selecting a single winner. That would still improve models by ruling out explanations that cannot accommodate the measured material.

Why one sample cannot reveal exactly how Mars formed
- Sampling is local: Even a mission target of more than 10 grams represents material collected at selected sites, not every part of Phobos.
- Surfaces are processed: Impacts, radiation and other surface processes can modify exposed grains. The spacecraft’s context observations are needed to separate original composition from surface alteration.
- Interpretation is model-dependent: The same mineralogical feature may have more than one plausible history. Researchers must compare competing simulations and observations.
- Moon origin is not planet formation: Establishing how Phobos formed would illuminate the early Mars system, but Mars itself assembled through a much longer sequence of planetary growth and differentiation.
- The result is still prospective: Until MMX collects and returns material, no sample-based conclusion about the moons is established.
These limits do not make the mission less useful. They define the claim it can responsibly support: a Phobos sample could constrain the origin of the moons and improve our understanding of early Mars, rather than single-handedly solve planetary formation.
What scientists will compare after return
The strongest interpretation will come from a chain of comparisons:
- Match laboratory composition and mineralogy to the surface signatures measured by MMX.
- Check whether the collected material is typical of the mapped sampling region or unusually local.
- Compare Phobos’s results with observations of Deimos to test whether the moons share a history.
- Evaluate both giant-impact and capture models against the complete evidence set.
- Use the surviving model constraints to refine scenarios for the early Mars system.
This approach explains why the mission carries both remote-sensing capability and two collection mechanisms. Observation provides the “where” and “what context”; returned material provides the laboratory evidence needed to test the competing origin stories.

Yes, in the scientifically defensible sense. Phobos is a potential record of whether Mars’s moons formed from a Mars-centered impact or arrived as captured asteroids. MMX’s planned return of more than 10 grams, combined with compositional observations from instruments such as MEGANE, is designed to distinguish those possibilities more rigorously than remote sensing alone.
The eventual result is unknown. Whatever MMX finds will speak most directly to the origin of Phobos and Deimos and, through that history, to the conditions and events that shaped the young Mars system.
