Could a Coal-Fueled Jet Aircraft Work With Modern Materials and Engines?

Not as a conventional aircraft fuel. A turbofan cannot simply burn lumps of coal or a tank of coal dust because coal is a solid, ash-forming fuel containing mineral contaminants. Feeding it consistently during climbs, turns and turbulence would require pulverizers or slurry equipment, dust-explosion controls, ash removal and protection against severe erosion. Those systems would consume the mass and volume advantage that makes kerosene practical.

Coal can, however, be converted on the ground into a liquid synthetic fuel. Fischer–Tropsch synthesis and hydrotreatment have produced coal-derived liquids that ran in turbine test hardware and, in one study, met most JP-8 specifications. The realistic concept is therefore coal-derived synthetic jet fuel, not a jet carrying coal. Whether that fuel is acceptable depends on qualification, airport logistics and lifecycle carbon emissions.

Why raw coal is a poor jet-engine fuel

Aircraft need a controllable liquid, not a bulk solid

Jet engines meter fuel through pumps, valves and fine injectors. The fuel must flow at a predictable rate while the aircraft changes attitude, throttle setting and altitude. Raw coal would have to be pulverized into a controlled powder, transported from a hopper without bridging or settling, and metered despite vibration and acceleration. A coal-water or coal-oil slurry would avoid some dust problems but would add water or carrier oil, pumping complexity and freezing concerns.

Coal dust also creates an explosion hazard wherever it accumulates in an enclosed aircraft system. Conveyors, filters, valves and storage compartments would need containment and inerting provisions that conventional jet-fuel tanks do not require.

Ash and minerals attack the engine

Coal contains noncombustible minerals. Combustion produces bottom ash and fine fly ash that can foul combustors and erode compressor and turbine surfaces. Unburned carbon can deposit on hot components. Sulfur and trace metals create additional corrosion and emissions problems. Modern superalloys, thermal-barrier coatings and ceramic components can tolerate higher temperatures and some corrosive environments, but they do not make ash disappear. The aircraft would still need separators, filters or sacrificial hardware and a way to discharge the collected solids.

Pollution controls do not fit a normal airliner

Coal combustion is associated with sulfur compounds, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, mercury and fly ash. The U.S. Energy Information Administration attributed 19% of U.S. energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions in 2022 to coal combustion. A ground power station can install large scrubbers, baghouses and ash-handling equipment; a flying aircraft cannot easily carry that equipment without a major mass, drag and maintenance penalty. A tailpipe that released the contaminants would also undermine the purpose of using a high-performance turbine.

Could an aircraft gasify coal onboard?

Gasification would convert coal into a combustible synthesis gas before the turbine burns it. In principle, that avoids sending solid particles through the combustor. In practice, it turns the aircraft into a small chemical plant.

A workable system would require a gasifier, controlled supplies of oxygen or steam, heat exchangers, ash discharge, sulfur removal, particulate cleanup and controls for the gas composition. Designs described by the U.S. National Energy Technology Laboratory for stationary coal-gasification systems use combinations of cyclones, ceramic or metal filters, ash classifiers, lockhoppers and conveyors. Even at ground scale, those subsystems are substantial. On an aircraft they would add hot surfaces, pressure vessels, moving solids and consumables while reducing the fuel fraction available for payload.

The gasifier would also have to start rapidly, remain stable through throttle changes and handle aircraft maneuvers. A conventional turbofan starts with a clean liquid fuel and a comparatively simple fuel system; an onboard gasifier would need an entirely new propulsion architecture and certification program. It is technically conceivable for a special-purpose aircraft, but operationally implausible for a normal jet transport.

The realistic route: make a liquid fuel before the flight

Fischer–Tropsch coal-to-liquids

In a coal-to-liquids plant, coal is gasified into synthesis gas, contaminants are removed on the ground, and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis converts the cleaned gas into hydrocarbons. Refining and blending can produce a kerosene-like liquid that is pumped, stored and injected much like other turbine fuels. The aircraft carries none of the gasifier, ash classifier or sulfur-cleanup equipment.

The plant still has substantial requirements: coal handling, oxygen or steam production, reactors, hydrogen for upgrading, water, waste treatment and carbon-management equipment. Moving the complexity off the aircraft solves the flight problem; it does not make the fuel automatically low-carbon or inexpensive.

Hydrotreating coal-derived oil

Another route starts with coal-derived oil and uses hydrotreatment to remove impurities and adjust the hydrocarbon molecules. A peer-reviewed study processed a 1:1 coal-derived-oil and petroleum stream, then tested the resulting fuel in a model high-pressure combustor and a T-63 turboshaft. The fuel met most JP-8 specifications, but some results remained outside specification limits, so the result was not universal certification or commercial approval.

What testing has actually shown

Cold-flow and combustion behavior

The tested coal-derived liquid remained a single phase down to −70 °C, an important result for fuel systems exposed to very cold upper-atmosphere conditions. It was denser than JP-8, which affects tank mass, metering and the amount of fuel carried for a given volume. In the T-63 test, overall emissions were only slightly higher than the comparison fuel, although individual specification results were not all within limits.

Those findings show that a refined coal-derived liquid can behave like a turbine fuel in hardware. They do not show that raw coal, coal dust or an unrefined coal slurry can run a modern turbofan.

NASA flight-hardware testing

NASA’s 2009 Alternative Aviation Fuel Experiment measured performance and emissions from Fischer–Tropsch synthetic fuels made from coal and natural gas in a DC-8 while the aircraft remained on the ground. Testing a full-size aircraft engine is a much stronger demonstration than a laboratory flame, but a ground test is not the same as airline service. It does not by itself establish fleet-wide approval, airport supply or lifecycle climate performance.

Certification is a separate gate

NASA summarizes the requirement plainly: “Before a new fuel can be used in a jet engine it must go through an extensive certification process, including small- and large-scale experimental validation.” That process examines combustion, operability, materials compatibility, seals, fuel-system behavior, emissions, safety and long-term effects across engine conditions.

U.S. Department of Transportation testimony from 2009 described ASTM D7566 allowances of up to 50% Fischer–Tropsch synthetic-fuel blend when the applicable qualification requirements were met. The percentage is a qualified blend limit, not permission to pour any coal-derived liquid into any aircraft. Approved feedstock, processing, properties and blending conditions all matter, and standards can change.

Comparing the possible architectures

Path Aircraft hardware burden Fuel qualification Emissions and climate issue Practical verdict
Raw coal, dust or slurry Very high: solids feed, containment, ash removal, erosion protection and explosion controls No conventional drop-in pathway is shown Coal pollutants, ash and particulate control would be difficult in flight Not practical for normal jets
Onboard gasification Extreme: gasifier, oxygen or steam handling, hot-gas cleanup, ash systems and controls Would require certification of a new propulsion system and fuel Hot-gas contaminants and upstream carbon dioxide remain issues Technically conceivable but operationally implausible
Ground coal-to-liquid synthetic kerosene Moderate if the finished fuel is qualified; conventional pumps and injectors can be retained Extensive ASTM, engine, materials and safety testing Upstream carbon dioxide can dominate without capture and permanent storage Technically demonstrated as a fuel route
Coal-derived hydrogen or methane Major new tanks, insulation, fuel systems and aircraft layout New fuel and airframe certification Lifecycle emissions and airport infrastructure determine the result Special-purpose future aircraft only

Do modern materials change the answer?

They improve the margins, not the architecture. High-temperature alloys and coatings can reduce damage from heat, sulfur and some particulate exposure. Better sensors and digital controls could stabilize a difficult fuel feed. Advanced ceramic filters might remove more ash at lower mass than older designs. None of those advances supplies a lightweight way to store, meter and dispose of mineral solids during flight.

The central comparison is therefore not “old engine versus new engine.” It is liquid fuel system versus airborne solids-processing plant. Modern materials help the second option survive; they do not make it competitive with a tank, pump and injector designed for a clean liquid.

Would coal-derived jet fuel work at altitude?

A properly refined liquid can be formulated for the temperature and pressure conditions of flight. The −70 °C single-phase result in the hydrotreatment study is evidence that at least one formulation had useful cold-flow behavior. Density and thermal properties still need to match the engine and aircraft’s approved ranges, and every formulation must be tested for waxing, seal swelling, lubricity, ignition, smoke and thermal stability.

Altitude itself does not make coal-derived fuel impossible. The key distinction is that the aircraft burns a qualified liquid whose contaminants were removed at the plant, not the original coal. The fuel’s production route remains relevant to climate performance even when the engine sees a conventional-looking liquid.

Is coal-to-jet fuel cleaner than petroleum?

Tailpipe emissions

At the engine exhaust, a highly refined synthetic fuel can resemble conventional kerosene. It may have different aromatic content, sulfur level and soot behavior, and testing is needed to quantify those differences. Similar turbine performance does not mean identical emissions, and the T-63 study reported slightly greater overall emissions for its tested fuel.

Lifecycle emissions

Most of the climate question is upstream. Coal must be mined, transported, gasified and synthesized; those steps consume energy and usually add process carbon dioxide. NASA notes that coal-derived synthetic fuels can resemble conventional jet fuel in performance but would add manufacturing carbon dioxide that would need permanent sequestration to support a lower-carbon claim.

ICAO’s current CORSIA framework cites an aviation-fuel baseline of 89 gCO2e/MJ and uses a 10% lifecycle-emissions reduction criterion for eligibility under its lower-carbon-fuel framework. A coal-derived fuel should be judged against that lifecycle accounting, not just the carbon released from the engine nozzle. Carbon capture at the plant, durable transport and verified permanent storage are central to any claim that coal-to-jet fuel reduces climate impact.

What would have to happen before airline use?

  1. Define the fuel pathway. Specify the coal feedstock, gasification or oil-production process, synthesis method, hydrotreatment, additives and blending ratio.
  2. Control contaminants. Demonstrate limits for sulfur, metals, ash precursors, particulates and trace compounds that could damage fuel systems or hot-section hardware.
  3. Measure fuel properties. Establish density, freezing behavior, viscosity, lubricity, ignition quality, thermal stability and energy content over the full operating range.
  4. Run component and engine tests. Test injectors, pumps, seals, combustors and complete engines through starts, relights, throttle transients and high-altitude conditions.
  5. Complete formal qualification. Apply the relevant aviation-fuel specification and synthetic-fuel annexes, then document materials, emissions and safety results for the certifying authorities.
  6. Build the supply chain. Provide consistent batches, airport storage, quality testing, blending controls and procedures for switching between approved fuels.
  7. Verify lifecycle accounting. Account for mining, plant energy, hydrogen, water, transport, carbon capture and permanent sequestration rather than counting only tailpipe carbon.

Bottom line for each coal-aircraft idea

  • Burning lumps of coal: No. The fuel cannot be metered or burned without heavy solids equipment and ash controls.
  • Burning coal dust: Not in a normal jet. Dust handling, explosion protection, erosion and particulate emissions overwhelm the apparent fuel-cost advantage.
  • Gasifying coal onboard: Physically possible in principle, but the aircraft would carry a chemical plant and require a new propulsion certification basis.
  • Using coal-derived synthetic kerosene: Technically credible. Test programs have run such fuels in turbine hardware, but qualification, supply and lifecycle carbon controls determine whether a specific fuel can be used.
