It was still possible, as of the National Hurricane Center’s October 6, 2026 summary, that the Atlantic season could end with no hurricanes—but that outcome was far from settled. The basin had recorded eight named storms and no hurricanes, while a tropical depression that formed in the Gulf of America on October 6 was forecast to strengthen quickly. El Niño has been a major influence suppressing Atlantic activity, but it does not guarantee a hurricane-free season.
What has happened in the Atlantic so far?
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) counted eight named storms, zero hurricanes and zero major hurricanes through 15 UTC on October 6, 2026. A tropical depression had formed over the Gulf of America that day. Because it was forecast to strengthen, the count could change quickly; a depression is not yet a hurricane. That snapshot made 2026 an unusually quiet season to that point, but it did not establish how the season would finish. The NHC page updated early October 7 UTC reported the depression and forecast rapid strengthening. The no-hurricane outcome remained possible, not secure.

El Niño increases Atlantic wind shear
NOAA says El Niño conditions emerged in the equatorial Pacific in June. El Niño tends to increase vertical wind shear over the Atlantic: changes in wind speed or direction with height that can disrupt developing tropical systems. This can make storms harder to form and harder to strengthen. NOAA seasonal outlook

That makes El Niño a plausible major reason for reduced Atlantic activity, not a proven explanation for every feature of this season. NOAA’s outlook also notes other influences, including Atlantic ocean warmth and trade winds, as well as uncertainty in seasonal forecasts. NOAA outlook discussion
The effect differs by ocean basin
El Niño is not a global off switch for hurricanes or tropical cyclones. NOAA notes that it tends to limit Atlantic tropical activity while it can enhance activity in the eastern and central Pacific. The influence depends on the basin. NOAA on El Niño and tropical activity

What NOAA forecast—and what that forecast means
In its August 6, 2026 update, NOAA gave a 75% probability of a below-normal Atlantic season. Its forecast range for the full June 1–November 30 season was 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes and 0–2 major hurricanes. NOAA had counted two named storms at the time of that outlook; those were the figures available when the forecast was issued, not the later October record. NOAA’s August 6 outlook

Has the Atlantic season passed its peak?
September 10 is the NHC’s climatological peak date for Atlantic hurricane season, and most activity historically occurs from mid-August to mid-October. Passing the September peak month does not mean the season is over. NOAA defines the official Atlantic season as June 1 through November 30, so storms remain possible in October and November. Low basin-wide activity does not make any particular community safe from a storm. NOAA National Weather Service Director Ken Graham put the practical point plainly: “That’s why it’s important to prepare for every storm that’s projected to impact your area, even if it never reaches hurricane strength.” NOAA’s August 6, 2026 season update
