If Windows says “costura.dll is missing” or “costura.dll was not found”, repair the application that displayed the message rather than downloading a DLL from a random website. Costura is an add-in for Fody that lets a .NET application embed referenced assemblies and load them at runtime. A missing file usually points to an incomplete application package, a failed update, or a deployment/build problem. Restart first, then use the app’s Windows repair or reset option, and reinstall the app from its publisher if necessary. Developers must restore the Costura/Fody packages and rebuild the application correctly.
What costura.dll is and why the message appears
Costura is not a normal Windows system component such as a file supplied by the operating system. The official Costura project describes it as “an add-in for Fody.” It embeds referenced .NET assemblies as resources in a target assembly and injects loading code so those dependencies can be resolved when the program starts.

When an application reports that costura.dll is missing, the important question is which application raised the message. The file may be part of that application’s packaging or dependency-loading arrangement. The application may have been updated incompletely, copied without all of its files, removed by an over-aggressive cleanup process, or built without the expected Costura output. Replacing one DLL globally does not repair those underlying conditions.
The same wording can occur on Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the remedy is normally application-specific. If only one program fails, concentrate on that program. If several unrelated programs fail, investigate a broader installation, storage, security, or Windows problem after checking each application’s own files.

Choose the right repair path

Fix costura.dll for a Windows application
1. Restart Windows and retry
Save your work and restart the computer from Start > Power > Restart. Launch the same application again after signing back in. A restart clears a transient file lock or an incomplete process left by an update. If the application opens normally, no DLL replacement is needed. If the message returns, continue with the application repair steps.
2. Use the application’s Repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps (Windows 11) or the equivalent installed-apps list in Windows 10.
- Find the program that produced the costura.dll message. Select its three-dot menu or entry, then choose Advanced options when it is offered.
- Choose Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again and check whether the message has disappeared.
Microsoft notes that not every desktop application exposes these controls. A traditional Win32 program, a portable application, or software installed by a custom launcher may not show Advanced options at all. In that case, do not create a replacement DLL; move to the trusted reinstall path.
3. Try Reset only when Repair did not work
If Repair completed but the error remains, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset if it is available. Reset removes the application’s local data and restores its settings to their initial state, so record any settings, profiles, or locally stored data that the program does not synchronize before using it. Reopen the application after the reset. If the program still cannot load, reinstall it.

- Close the affected program and any launcher or updater associated with it.
- Back up application documents, profiles, templates, saved games, or other data that the program stores locally.
- Uninstall the application using Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or use the application’s own uninstaller.
- Obtain the current installer from the application publisher or use the original trusted distribution channel. Avoid download pages that offer an individual costura.dll file.
- Install the program with the normal options. If the publisher provides a repair-capable installer, use that rather than copying files manually.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it, then launch the program.
Reinstallation is more reliable than copying a DLL because the program may require several assemblies, a manifest, native components, registry entries, or a particular directory layout. A file from a different application version can produce a new assembly-load error even when its name matches.

5. Check whether the failure is limited to one application
After reinstalling, test the affected program and one or two unrelated applications. A single failure generally indicates that program’s installation or update. If several programs begin reporting missing managed assemblies, check whether a recent system cleanup, restore operation, security quarantine, disk problem, or incomplete software deployment affected multiple directories. Keep each program’s installer and version information; those details help the publisher identify a packaging defect.
Why downloading costura.dll is not a safe fix
Third-party DLL sites cannot know which Costura/Fody build, target framework, processor architecture, or application directory your program requires. A file with the right name may be the wrong assembly, may lack related dependencies, or may be modified. It can also leave the application’s manifest and embedded resources inconsistent. That creates additional load errors and an unnecessary security exposure.
Windows does not provide a supported, system-wide “costura.dll” download for this message. The supported user-level sequence is to repair or reset the affected app when Windows offers those controls, then reinstall the complete application from a trusted source. Do not place a downloaded DLL in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another global folder to make one program start.

If you maintain the program that fails, treat the message as a build or deployment defect rather than asking users to fetch a file. Reproduce the problem from a clean checkout or clean build machine and verify that the application output contains the dependencies expected by its Costura configuration.

Restore the Fody and Costura packages
Install or restore both the Fody package and the Costura.Fody NuGet package used by the project. The Costura documentation notes that the Fody package is required; without the correct package restore, NuGet can select an old dependency or the Costura weaver may not be available during the build. A historical official issue describes the characteristic error Could not find a weaver named 'Costura' when the package was not restored or installed.
NuGet currently lists Costura.Fody 6.2.0 for .NET Standard 2.0. The documented command is:
dotnet add package Costura.Fody --version 6.2.0Use that version only when it is compatible with the project’s target framework and dependency set. Check the project’s package references and lock or restore files, then perform a clean restore. Do not change a production package version solely because it is the newest listing; verify compatibility, test the application, and commit the resulting package configuration.

</Weavers>The element must be part of the build that produces the failing executable or library. A file in another project, a misspelled weaver name, or a configuration excluded from the build will not embed the expected assemblies. Check the build output and inspect the generated artifact rather than assuming that a successful compile produced a complete deployment folder.
Include dependencies that Costura omitted
Some dependencies are not included automatically. If a particular assembly such as System.Text.Encoding.CodePages is absent at runtime, review Costura’s IncludeAssemblies and IncludeRuntimeAssemblies configuration options. Also inspect each relevant PackageReference, especially its IncludeAssets setting, because an asset excluded from the build cannot be embedded later.
Make the smallest explicit configuration change needed for the missing dependency, rebuild, and test on a clean machine that does not have the developer’s package cache. Confirm that the published output contains the required managed and native files and that the application starts without relying on files left in the development environment.
Clean, rebuild, and test the published artifact
- Delete old build and publish output so stale assemblies cannot mask the problem.
- Restore packages from the project’s declared sources.
- Build with the intended configuration and target framework.
- Publish or package the application using the same process used for customers.
- Install that artifact on a clean Windows 11 or Windows 10 test machine.
- Launch the feature that previously failed and review the application’s own logs for any remaining assembly-load error.
If the application is distributed through an installer, update the installer manifest and payload as well as the project. A correct local build can still produce a missing-file report when the packaging step omits a generated file.
Plan for newer .NET applications
The Costura repository is in maintenance mode and recommends evaluating .NET single-file executables or assembly linking for newer .NET applications. That does not mean an existing Costura application must be rewritten immediately. It does mean that a new deployment should compare the supported publishing options, target framework requirements, startup behavior, debugging experience, and native-library handling before adopting Costura for another product.

Startup Repair is designed for missing or damaged Windows system files and boot-configuration problems. It is not the normal first response to a costura.dll message shown by one application after Windows has started.
Consider broader Windows recovery only when the computer also has symptoms such as failure to boot, repeated automatic-repair screens, damaged startup configuration, or multiple Windows components failing before applications open. If Windows starts normally and one program alone reports costura.dll, use the application repair, reset, or reinstall sequence instead. Running boot recovery for an isolated application dependency can add complexity without restoring that program’s files.

Windows 10 support and lifecycle considerations
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still run installed software, but it no longer receives the same ongoing operating-system support available during the supported lifecycle. When deciding whether to keep an affected application on Windows 10, account for the operating system’s end-of-support status, the publisher’s supported Windows versions, and whether the application has a compatible Windows 11 release.
Do not upgrade the operating system solely to replace one missing application file. First restore the application with its current trusted installer. If the publisher no longer supports the application on your Windows edition, document the last compatible release and evaluate a supported replacement or operating-system plan rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.
