For an idealized 30-day month, each average watt adds 0.72 kWh: at an illustrative ₹4–₹10 per kWh, a PC averaging 100 W would use 72 kWh and add about ₹288–₹720. Those are arithmetic examples, not a measured gaming-PC result or a universal Indian tariff.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
Use the PC’s average wall-side power, not its power-supply rating. For a 30-day month of uninterrupted operation:

- Energy: average watts × 0.72 = kWh over 720 hours.
- Cost: monthly kWh × the marginal rupees per kWh applicable to the extra units.
The 0.72 factor comes from 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000. Each average watt therefore adds 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month. For a full 365-day year, calculate using 8,760 hours rather than assuming every month is identical.

The following figures show the arithmetic at two example electricity rates. They do not represent measured consumption by a particular gaming PC, and ₹4–₹10/kWh is not a universal Indian tariff.

These examples help show how continuous operation compounds a modest average draw. Your own result can differ because both the PC’s workload and the price of the additional units vary.
Measure the PC under the workload you plan to stream
A gaming PC’s PSU rating describes its capacity, not its continuous electricity use. Actual draw depends on components and activity, the encoder, output settings, power limits, background processes, and attached equipment. A label such as “gaming PC” cannot establish a reliable wattage estimate on its own.
- Decide what you are counting. If the estimate is for the whole streaming setup, include the monitor, network equipment, capture devices, speakers, or lights you intend to leave on. Otherwise, meter only the PC and keep the comparison consistent.
- Use a plug-in kWh meter or energy monitor. Check that it is compatible with your outlet and rated for the connected load. Measure at the wall while the PC runs the intended stream workload; a representative full day is more useful than a brief idle reading.
- Record the energy used over the measurement period. If the meter reports kWh for a measured number of hours, divide those kWh by the hours to get average kW, then multiply by 1,000 for average watts. For example, a meter reading of 2.4 kWh over 24 hours corresponds to 100 W average.
- Apply the monthly formula. Multiply average watts by 0.72 for the 30-day kWh estimate, then use your bill’s applicable marginal rate to estimate the added cost.
The reading should reflect the video, audio, and encoding setup you will actually use. A brief idle measurement or a gaming-session peak is not a substitute for average draw during the stream workload.

Use your own Indian electricity tariff, not a national guess
India does not have one household retail electricity rate. Charges vary by state and DISCOM, and the bill can include slabs, fixed charges, duties, and subsidies. A quoted average rate may not equal what the next units cost.

Start with your latest bill and the current schedule for your local DISCOM. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff-and-duty compendium is a route to state schedules. The Rural Electrification Corporation’s FY 2025-26 comparison uses a representative domestic case of 3 kW and 100 units per month; it provides context, not a universal marginal rate for your home.
If the extra units cross a slab
Estimate the bill once with the PC’s additional monthly units and once without them, then subtract the second total from the first. This captures the change if added consumption moves some units into a higher slab. Include applicable duties or adjustments where they vary with consumption. Do not attribute a fixed charge to the PC unless its use changes a billing condition such as the applicable load category.
If the PC already runs during the day
For the extra cost of keeping it available for streaming, count only the incremental hours and draw attributable to that use. Comparing a 24-hour estimate against a bill that already includes several hours of PC use every day would overstate the added consumption.

Allow for real uptime
A 30-day month at 24/7 operation represents 720 hours. Power cuts, reboots, maintenance, and stream interruptions reduce actual run time; the difference is usually best handled by using your measured operating hours. Month length and leap years also change annual totals.

Streaming settings affect the workload, not a known wattage
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion options for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps at 1080p60; the listed AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Those are stream settings, not electricity measurements. They do not tell you how many watts your specific PC will draw: that depends on the hardware and whether encoding is handled in hardware or software, among other factors. To estimate your cost, meter the PC using the codec and output settings you intend to keep running.
Upload capacity matters for stream reliability too. YouTube’s network recommendations advise leaving roughly 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and using a reliable upload connection. A setting that your connection cannot sustain can cause stream problems without changing the electricity formula.
Check YouTube eligibility and test before relying on a 24/7 setup
For encoder-based live streaming, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its live streaming tips recommend setting up and testing in advance and monitoring stream quality. Test with representative audio and movement, then check stream health before leaving the setup unattended.

Electricity cost is separate from the right to stream the material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the applicable copyright and YouTube rules before leaving a loop running. A successful connection does not itself establish that you have permission to use the video or audio.
