For a 30-day month, use monthly electricity cost (₹) = average wall draw (W) × 0.72 × your marginal tariff (₹/kWh). For example, an assumed 10 W at an assumed ₹6/kWh comes to ₹43.20. Those are arithmetic assumptions, not a measured Pi result or a universal Indian tariff.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
Use this formula, with the wattage measured for your complete setup and the rate that applies to your next unit of electricity:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Monthly electricity cost (₹) = average wall draw (W) × 24 × billing-period days ÷ 1,000 × marginal tariff (₹/kWh)
For 30 days, the formula simplifies to 0.72 × average watts × rate per kWh. It estimates the energy charge attributable to running the setup; it is not a full bill forecast.

| Assumed average draw at wall | Energy in 30 days | Cost at assumed ₹6/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 5 W | 3.6 kWh | ₹21.60 |
| 10 W | 7.2 kWh | ₹43.20 |
| 15 W | 10.8 kWh | ₹64.80 |
These are examples for calculation only—not power measurements for a Raspberry Pi model or FFmpeg workload. If your billing period is 31 days and draw and rate remain constant, multiply a 30-day estimate by 31/30. Use the actual period length on your bill.
Measure the whole Raspberry Pi setup
The most useful wattage is the average draw measured at the wall while FFmpeg is doing the work you intend to run continuously. That includes power-supply losses and attached devices such as storage, USB accessories, and any HAT. A plug-in electricity usage meter can provide a reading for the complete setup; it is optional, not a requirement.

Raspberry Pi’s official hardware documentation cautions that its power measurements are approximate, do not include additional USB devices, and can be exceeded when multiple USB devices or a HAT are attached. See the Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
Do not substitute the power-supply rating for measured consumption. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W supply for Pi 5 and a 15 W supply for Pi 4 Model B; these are recommended supply capacities, not evidence that either board continuously draws that wattage.

Use your own Indian electricity tariff
India does not have one household electricity rate to apply to every Pi. Rates depend on state or union territory, utility, consumer category and, in some cases, the consumption slab. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff publication separates rates by state/UT, utility and category. It lists a Goa domestic average billing rate of ₹3.50/kWh as one specific entry—not a national household rate. Check your latest bill or the applicable utility tariff for your marginal rate; the CEA table is available in its 2025 electricity tariff publication.
Actual bills can also include slab effects, subsidies, taxes and fixed charges. Do not assign a fixed charge to the Pi unless its consumption changes the applicable bill tier. For an estimate of the Pi’s incremental energy cost, multiply its measured energy by the marginal rate that applies to that consumption.

FFmpeg workload changes what you should measure
Power use is tied to what FFmpeg is doing, not merely to the fact that it is installed. Sending an already encoded file, remuxing a stream, and transcoding video in real time are different workloads. The available figures do not establish the wall draw or real-time performance of an unspecified Pi model processing an unspecified video format. Measure the exact board, source, settings and attached equipment you plan to use rather than treating an assumed wattage as a benchmark.
For the stream or video being sent, follow YouTube’s format guidance rather than inferring Pi capability from an encoding recommendation. YouTube Help recommends H.264 video settings and says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate at which it was recorded. Those recommendations do not certify that a particular Pi can encode a workload in real time. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Compare the home setup with a managed cloud stream
Electricity is only one part of the cost of keeping a YouTube stream running. A Raspberry Pi also depends on your continuous home internet connection, and you are responsible for monitoring and recovering the setup. A hosted service has a recurring charge instead of the Pi’s electricity being the whole comparison; consider that charge separately from electricity, as well as who supplies the connection, what happens after an outage, whether encoding must happen in real time, and any upfront hardware cost.
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The company says each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Its published comparison gives a vendor estimate of 8–12 W and roughly ₹60–70 per month for Raspberry Pi 5; treat that as the vendor’s estimate, not an independent measurement or a figure to use instead of measuring your own setup. Details are in StreamNeo’s comparison of 24/7 streaming costs. For service details, visit StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without maintaining an always-on home setup, StreamNeo works in three steps:
