There is no single monthly electricity cost for running a 24/7 YouTube ambient music channel on a mini PC. The answer depends on the whole setup’s average power draw while it is actually streaming and the electricity rate on your bill. Measure the draw at the wall during representative operation, convert it to kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your local rate.
How to calculate the electricity cost
Use this formula:
Energy (kWh) = average power draw (W) × operating hours ÷ 1,000

Then multiply the energy in kWh by your applicable price per kWh. For a 30-day estimate, use 720 hours; for a full year of uninterrupted operation, use 8,760 hours. This estimates electricity for the devices included in your measurement. It does not include hardware purchase, internet service, backup power or other fixed charges.
Example: a 10-watt average draw
Mini PC Lab’s 2026 guide illustrates the calculation with 10 W at $0.12/kWh, yielding $10.51 per year. That is an example using the guide’s assumed rate, not a current national tariff or a measured YouTube-streaming workload. Your bill will depend on your own measured draw and tariff. Measure your actual streaming setup
An adapter’s rated capacity and an idle-only reading do not tell you how much electricity the full system uses while encoding and streaming. Measure the setup at the wall while it is doing the work you intend to run.
- Place a plug-in electricity usage monitor between the outlet and the mini PC’s power supply. Include peripherals such as a display or audio equipment if they are part of the system whose cost you want to estimate.
- Run the actual scene, encoder, resolution and frame rate for representative periods. Include startup and routine operation, and record average watts rather than a momentary peak or an idle figure.
- Multiply the average watts by your intended operating hours, divide by 1,000 to get kWh, then multiply by the energy rate on your bill. State whether your estimate covers 30 days, an annual average month or a full year.
- When comparing hardware, keep the workload, connected devices, meter and tariff assumptions consistent. Consider sustained stream stability, upload reliability, noise and thermal behavior alongside average wall draw and purchase cost.

What published mini PC readings can—and cannot—tell you
Mini PC Lab’s 2026 guide reports 6.2 W idle, 8–10 W under light load and 18–22 W under full CPU load for a Beelink EQ14. The idle reading followed ten minutes of stable idle on Proxmox VE 8.x with no virtual machines running. The guide also gives a 5.5–6.5 W idle range for generic Intel N100 mini PCs in its home-server measurement context. These figures offer context, not a prediction of the power draw for a YouTube encoder running your ambient stream. Measure your own workload before estimating its cost. Configure and monitor the YouTube stream
YouTube’s setup guidance says to create or select a stream in Studio, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, configure the encoder, and start it. Bitrate, codec and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder settings page gives recommended ingestion bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, its table spans 5–14 Mbps across the minimum and recommended columns; for AV1 or H.265 at that resolution and frame rate, it spans 4–10 Mbps. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not a measurement of your upload speed or the mini PC’s electricity use. YouTube also lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR and supported codecs, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Check the current table and configure the encoder to match the connection and chosen output. Plan for a continuous broadcast’s archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be archived as a single video. Common cost and streaming mistakes
- Using idle watts as the stream estimate: idle is a different workload. Measure average wall draw while the real encoder and scene are running.
- Using the power adapter’s capacity as actual consumption: the adapter rating is not a wall measurement. Use a plug-in meter.
- Forgetting accessories: include any devices that you want counted in the whole-system estimate.
- Mixing time periods: use 720 hours for a 30-day month or 8,760 for a full year, and label the estimate accordingly.
- Choosing bitrate without checking the connection: test upload performance, choose settings that fit it, and monitor YouTube stream health.
- Assuming an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as one video: YouTube’s automatic archive statement is for streams under 12 hours; verify a suitable workflow for longer broadcasts.
