What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: A Linode (now Akamai Cloud) VPS has a predictable monthly bill; a spare desktop’s cost depends on its measured wall power and your electricity tariff. To compare them fairly, calculate the VPS plan cost for the region you will use, then calculate 720 hours of desktop electricity for an illustrative 30-day month. Neither the lowest-priced VPS nor a desktop that can boot is automatically suitable: test the actual stream settings, sustained encoding load, and upload connection.
Calculate the monthly cost of each option
VPS: use the selected region’s current plan price
Akamai’s North America pricing page lists the Nanode 1 GB at $5 per month or $0.0075 per hour, with 1 GB RAM, one CPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. This is a North America example, not a universal price or proof that the plan can encode your stream. Prices and plan availability vary by region; check the current price for the region you select on Akamai’s pricing page.

Use the recurring plan price as the VPS baseline, then check what the plan includes for outbound transfer and whether your use requires other paid services. The pricing page lists bundled transfer, but do not assume an overage charge—or that streaming to YouTube necessarily incurs one—without checking current billing terms.
Desktop: calculate electricity from measured wall draw
Use the computer’s average power draw at the wall while running the intended stream, not a guessed wattage or the power supply’s rated capacity. For a 30-day illustrative month:

Monthly kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 hours
Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × your electricity price per kWh
For example, insert your own measured watts and the rate on your electricity bill; there is no universal desktop cost. A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure wall draw. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly reports prices by state and end-use sector, but your applicable tariff may differ. Outside the U.S., use your local bill or electricity provider’s rate.

Find your local electricity break-even point
To find the desktop wall draw at which electricity alone costs as much as a chosen VPS plan, use:
Break-even watts = VPS monthly price ÷ (720 monthly hours × electricity price per kWh) × 1,000
Use the same currency and billing period for both inputs. This comparison excludes hardware wear, internet costs, outages, and your time. It changes with the selected VPS region, plan price, and local tariff, so there is no single break-even wattage that applies to everyone.

Will a low-cost VPS handle your stream?
Price alone does not establish encoding suitability. The Nanode example has one CPU and 1 GB RAM; whether it can sustain your workload depends on the source, encoding method, resolution, frame rate, and other processes. If you are relaying a pre-encoded video with little processing, the compute burden may differ substantially from encoding live motion. Test the actual workload rather than assuming the cheapest plan is enough.
Akamai describes shared CPU as burstable and says: “These CPU cores can be used at 100% for short bursts, but should remain below 80% sustained usage on average, including virtualization overheads.” It also cautions that other customers’ workloads can affect performance. See Akamai’s compute-plan guidance. Monitor sustained CPU use during a representative stream and leave room for virtualization overhead; short bursts are not the same as reliable 24/7 capacity.
Check encoding settings and upload capacity
Match the encoder to the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs, and CBR among its encoder settings. Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include:

| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|

| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the listed H.264 modes, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode them or that they are the right settings for every source. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current full table and settings. Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health.
Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends a reliable connection and upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Apply that margin to the connection that actually sends the stream—home upload for the desktop, or the VPS network path for a server-based encoder. A connection that barely matches the video bitrate may not be enough, especially if you also send a backup stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

| Consideration | VPS | Spare desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cash cost | Plan price for the selected region; verify transfer and any additional services. | Measured electricity use × local tariff, plus any incremental internet cost. |
| Compute headroom | Depends on plan resources, shared CPU contention, and the intended workload; benchmark it. | Depends on the desktop’s actual CPU or hardware encoder and sustained load. |
| Network path | Check the VPS connection and included transfer terms. | Check home upload capacity, reliability, and YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Outages and recovery | Requires process supervision, monitoring, and a plan for reconnecting after interruption. | Also depends on home power and internet; a reboot or connection loss can interrupt the stream. |
| Operator effort | Requires server setup and ongoing monitoring. | Requires a running, maintained computer and monitoring. |
Either approach needs a recovery plan. Arrange for the streaming process to restart after a failure or reboot, monitor whether the stream remains healthy, and keep backup media available. These measures reduce the work of recovering from interruptions; they do not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Plan recordings separately from stream uptime. YouTube warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” and recommends keeping a local archive backup. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a promise of a complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Which option makes sense?
- Choose a VPS when you want a separately billed cloud machine and have confirmed its sustained compute capacity, network, and recovery setup for your stream.
- Choose the desktop when its measured electricity cost is acceptable, its hardware can handle the workload, and your home power and upload connection are dependable enough for your needs.
- Compare more than the bill. Include monitoring and maintenance time, the consequences of outages, and any incremental connection costs alongside monthly cash cost.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without keeping your PC online, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
