There is no universal cheaper option. A home NAS usually brings a larger upfront hardware cost plus power, backup and maintenance; a cloud VPS shifts those costs into recurring instance, storage, transfer and administration charges. Compare both over the same period, with the same stream quality, uptime, storage and backup assumptions. This comparison assumes you want to broadcast prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube Live stream. If you mean simply playing a playlist on YouTube, you may not need a NAS or VPS encoder at all.
What you are paying for
A NAS is storage and computing hardware at home that you buy and operate. A VPS is a virtual server rented from a hosting provider. Either can host media and run software that sends a continuous stream to YouTube, but neither option makes the stream cost just the price of storage or the advertised server fee.

For a fair comparison, define one period—such as 12 or 36 months—and use the same assumptions for usable media storage, broadcast quality, broadcast hours, backup, and expected availability. Include the value of setup and maintenance time if you want a total-cost-of-ownership estimate, not just a cash outlay.

Use measured power draw where possible, and your actual electricity tariff. If your internet plan has a data cap or charges for additional use, include that cost rather than assuming home upload is unlimited.

Estimate stream traffic before choosing a plan
For a continuous broadcast, approximate monthly outbound data from the stream’s actual bitrate and broadcast uptime, then compare it with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage rules. A useful starting calculation is:
traffic in bits = bitrate in bits per second × broadcast seconds
Divide by 8 for bytes, then convert using the provider’s stated units. Providers may use decimal GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) or binary GiB (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes); check which one applies. Add allowance for protocol overhead and any other server traffic. Do not assume a VPS plan is adequate just because its CPU and storage appear sufficient.

Check that either connection can sustain the stream
YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings by resolution and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance lists 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection or VPS plan will work. YouTube recommends testing the selected profile and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. A home NAS depends on the sustained upload capacity and reliability of your home connection; a VPS moves the network path and potential transfer charges to the hosting provider, but does not remove the need to check capacity and continuity. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, according to its encoder guidance. That does not eliminate the need to send a stable source stream at an appropriate bitrate.

Which option fits your situation?
A home NAS may suit you if
- You already own a suitable NAS and disks, so the relevant comparison is operating and replacement cost rather than a new purchase.
- Your home upload service can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom, and outages at home are acceptable or you have a recovery plan.
- You want direct control of the hardware and are willing to maintain it, provide offsite backup, and handle failures.
A cloud VPS may suit you if
- You prefer not to purchase and house hardware, and a provider’s instance, storage and transfer charges work for your chosen period.
- You can verify that the plan supports the required encoder workload, persistent media storage, traffic volume and route to YouTube.
- You are comfortable administering a server or paying for separate management, and have checked backup and recovery costs.
Do not call a break-even until the assumptions match
Compare equal usable storage, stream quality, uptime, backup expectations and time horizon. Add setup and maintenance time if the result is meant to represent total ownership cost. The answer changes with capacity, bitrate, broadcast hours, local power and upload costs, and VPS pricing and traffic allowances.
A 2026 SeedboxCompare result reported a 46-month break-even in its specific comparison of an 8 TB rented media box with electricity included. That is not a general NAS-versus-VPS break-even and does not establish the answer for a YouTube live loop; its assumptions differ from an individual streaming setup.
