Cory Booker’s Oura data show a marked increase in movement and physiological load as his record-setting Senate speech continued into a second day. On April 1, 2025, the ring classified 4 hours 15 minutes as stress time, estimated 12,677 steps and 3,934 calories, and reported a lowest daytime average heart rate of 83 beats per minute. The previous day’s figures were 1 hour 15 minutes of stress, 8,467 steps, 3,479 calories and a 68-bpm lowest daytime average.
Booker’s office supplied the statistics to NOTUS. They are useful evidence of exertion and lost recovery time, but they are consumer-device estimates—not a medical examination.
What happened in the Senate
Booker began speaking at about 7 p.m. Eastern on Monday, March 31, 2025, and finished on Tuesday, April 1, after 25 hours and 5 minutes. That surpassed Strom Thurmond’s 24-hour, 18-minute speech from 1957 as the longest individual Senate floor speech on record. Booker was protesting President Donald Trump’s policies and actions associated with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
“Marathon Senate floor speech” is the most precise description. News organizations noted that it was not technically a traditional filibuster aimed at blocking a specific bill, even though the event is often described that way in casual coverage. The Senate’s record and event details are documented by Booker’s office and the Associated Press.

Booker prepared about 1,160 pages in 15 binders. Senate rules required him to remain standing and prevented a conventional bathroom break. Reports said he paced and shuffled behind his desk, helping explain how a speech delivered at a lectern produced several miles of movement.
The Oura measurements, day by day
The following figures came from statistics supplied by Booker’s office to NOTUS. March 31 includes the period before the speech and its opening hours; April 1 covers the speech’s continuation.
| Measure | March 31 | April 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Oura-classified stress time | 1 hour 15 minutes | 4 hours 15 minutes |
| Estimated calories burned | 3,479 | 3,934 |
| Steps | 8,467 | 12,677 |
| Estimated distance | 4.9 miles | 6.9 miles |
| Restorative time | 1 hour | 15 minutes |
| Lowest daytime average heart rate | 68 bpm | 83 bpm |
| Sleep context | 10 hours 29 minutes in bed before the speech | No sleep statistics during the overnight speech period |
That is a difference of 4,210 steps, 2 miles, 455 estimated calories, 3 additional hours classified as stress and 45 fewer minutes classified as restorative time. The lowest daytime average heart-rate figure was 15 beats per minute higher on April 1. Together, those changes are consistent with sustained exertion and less recovery, but they do not establish a diagnosis or prove that the speech caused a particular medical effect.

What the sleep data do—and do not—say
NOTUS reported no sleep statistics for the overnight period while the speech continued. Booker separately told reporters that his Oura sleep score was zero, a detail also reported by Axios. The careful interpretation is that the ring recorded or scored no qualifying sleep in that reporting window. It is not proof that the device observed literally zero seconds of unconsciousness; unusual or very short sleep can be missed by any wearable algorithm.

The surrounding timeline matters. Booker’s report showed 10 hours 29 minutes in bed before the speech and 9 hours 35 minutes in bed afterward. “Time in bed” is not the same as sleep time, and the public material does not include a complete raw sensor trace.
How Booker got through it
Axios reported that Booker had been fasting for roughly four days, wore Hoka Clifton sneakers and developed cramping he associated with dehydration near the end. His first post-speech food reportedly included pineapple and watermelon. These are details of one extraordinary event, not an endurance plan. Prolonged standing, fasting, dehydration and sleep deprivation can be dangerous, and an Oura report cannot verify the severity of dehydration or any resulting injury.

How to interpret each Oura metric
Steps and distance
Steps and mileage are movement estimates generated by the ring and its app. In Booker’s case, pacing in the limited space behind the Senate desk provides a plausible explanation for the totals. They do not measure how hard each step was or identify a specific injury.
Calories
Oura’s calorie number is an estimate rather than a direct measurement of metabolic expenditure. Booker’s 3,934 calories on April 1 should not be used to calculate how much he “needed” to eat or to infer his exact energy balance.
Heart rate
The relevant comparison is the ring’s lowest daytime average heart rate: 68 bpm on March 31 versus 83 bpm on April 1. That is not necessarily a clinical resting-heart-rate reading. Movement, stress, hydration, temperature, caffeine, illness and sensor contact can all affect heart-rate measurements. The public report does not provide Booker’s maximum heart rate, blood pressure, rhythm data or oxygen readings.

Stress and restorative time
“Stress time” is Oura’s algorithmic classification of physiological signals. It is not a direct tally of emotional distress. Likewise, restorative time is the app’s categorization of periods it interprets as lower physiological load; it is not a clinical measure of recovery. Booker’s results show how the app classified the two days, not a diagnosis of his mental or physical state.
What the public data cannot establish
- Blood pressure, blood-oxygen values during the speech or core temperature.
- The severity of dehydration or whether dehydration caused the cramping.
- Cardiac rhythm abnormalities, medical injury or cardiovascular safety.
- Booker’s exact heart-rate maximum.
- Whether the ring was worn continuously or whether readings were missing.
- Whether any estimates were later corrected.
- A complete raw, time-stamped data export.
There is also no evidence that Oura itself released Booker’s records. The available account says his office provided statistics to the reporter.

Oura’s membership materials describe a broader set of features: detailed sleep analysis, 24/7 heart-rate tracking, temperature monitoring, blood-oxygen sensing, Daytime Stress, automatic activity detection, activity goals, Cardiovascular Age, Cardio Capacity (VO₂ max), Resilience and periodic reports. The relevant outputs in Booker’s story—sleep, activity, heart-rate trends, stress and restorative time—are all estimates or classifications produced by sensors and software.

Oura’s current consumer product is the Oura Ring 4. As listed on the company’s product page, it offers 5–8 days of battery life, titanium construction, water resistance to 100 meters (328 feet), and iOS and Android compatibility. The Booker reports identify only an Oura ring; they do not establish that he wore Ring 4.
Membership, fit and data ownership
In the United States, Oura listed membership at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year before applicable taxes on August 16, 2026. New members receive one complimentary month. Oura says an active membership unlocks detailed sleep analysis, continuous heart-rate features, stress tools, blood-oxygen sensing, activity features, heart-health tools and reports. Without membership, users retain only limited daily scores and basic information. Check the official membership page for current terms.
Ring sizing is not the same as standard U.S. ring sizing. Oura recommends its sizing kit, and direct purchases can include one at no charge. The company’s purchase guidance makes fit a prerequisite: an incorrect size can reduce comfort and affect sensor performance.
Oura says account holders can export their data through the Membership Hub in CSV format, including when membership is inactive as long as the account remains intact. Availability of activation and full features varies by country; consult the supported-country list.
Is a ring the right kind of tracker?
- Oura: Best suited to readers prioritizing discreet sleep, recovery and stress trends without a screen, and who accept a recurring membership.
- Apple Watch: Better for a screen, notifications, workout tools and deep iPhone integration, but less discreet and wrist-worn.
- Garmin: Better for GPS, endurance training and workout-focused metrics.
- Fitbit: A mainstream wrist-worn option for activity and sleep tracking, with features and subscription terms varying by model.
No wearable can reproduce Booker’s experience or provide clinical certainty. The value of the ring is in observing personal trends—especially sleep and recovery—over time, not treating a single score as a medical verdict.
