The Corsair Obsidian 900D is worth considering only when you will use its unusual capacity. StorageReview’s 2013 specifications describe a super tower with up to 15 internal 3.5-inch drives, five radiator mounting positions, 15 fan locations, support for two power supplies, and ten expansion slots. Those capabilities make it a strong platform for storage servers, multi-GPU-era workstations, and elaborate custom loops, but its 25.6 × 9.9 × 27.2-inch size, 41-pound weight, awkward cable paths in one documented build, and missing PCIe-slot cooling fan make it excessive for a normal desktop.

Because all available reviews are from 2013, they establish the original design rather than today’s used-market price, condition, accessory supply, or warranty. Treat the 900D as a specialist legacy chassis: buy it when the drive bays, radiator room, or internal volume solve a specific problem, and inspect every listing carefully before committing.

What the Corsair Obsidian 900D is

The Obsidian 900D is a full-tower PC case built around expansion headroom rather than a small footprint. StorageReview’s April 2013 review lists support for ATX, E-ATX, HPTX, Micro ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards. That range covers ordinary desktop boards as well as unusually large workstation platforms. The chassis also provides ten expansion slots and positions two power supplies at the bottom, features aimed at systems with many add-in cards or unusually high power requirements.

Its defining trait is empty space that can be assigned to drives, radiators, pumps, reservoirs, or long cabling runs. The trade-off is physical scale. The published dimensions are 25.6 × 9.9 × 27.2 inches and the listed weight is 41 pounds before installing hardware. Measure doorways, desk shelves, rack-adjacent furniture, and the final location before buying; a case this large is difficult to reposition once it contains several drives, coolant, and two PSUs.

Pros of the Corsair 900D

Exceptional drive capacity

Nine internal 3.5-inch positions are included, and three of those are hot-swap bays. Adding two optional cages raises the stated capacity to 15 internal 3.5-inch drives. That ceiling is useful for a media archive, backup server, disk-heavy workstation, or a large software-defined-storage experiment where multiple drives matter more than a compact enclosure.

The four external 5.25-inch bays add another layer of flexibility. They can hold optical drives, fan controllers, removable-drive docks, or adapters that convert a 5.25-inch opening into several smaller drive positions. In StorageReview’s own build, four Icy Dock ToughArmor MB996SP-6SB six-in-one adapters were used as a specific example. Their presence in that build does not guarantee that every adapter, backplane, or drive combination will clear the 900D’s rails and neighboring hardware.

Room for multiple large radiators

The case has five specified radiator locations. StorageReview lists a front position up to 360 mm; a top position up to 480 mm with four 120 mm fans or 420 mm with three 140 mm fans; one bottom-side position up to 480 mm or 420 mm; a second bottom-side position up to 280 mm or 240 mm when a power supply is installed; and a rear position for a 120 mm or 140 mm radiator.

This arrangement can support separate CPU and GPU loops, a large single loop with generous radiator area, or a workstation that needs sustained cooling under long renders and compute loads. “Supports” describes the published mounting locations, not a promise that every radiator thickness, reservoir, pump, drive cage, and PSU can coexist. Check radiator thickness, fan orientation, tubing bends, and motherboard heatsink clearance before choosing parts.

Broad motherboard and expansion support

Support for HPTX and E-ATX sets the 900D apart from cases designed only around ATX. Ten expansion slots leave room for storage controllers, network cards, capture hardware, sound cards, and other add-in boards without immediately running out of positions. The two-PSU layout can also help a build that combines a power-hungry graphics or accelerator platform with many disks, although the electrical load still has to be planned safely and the power supplies must fit the available mounting areas.

Highly configurable interior

StorageReview characterized the interior as highly configurable in its storage-heavy build. The large volume gives builders several ways to distribute drive cages, pumps, reservoirs, and cabling instead of forcing one prescribed layout. That flexibility is especially valuable when a project changes over time: drives can be added, a second loop can be installed, or a workstation board can replace a smaller desktop board without immediately requiring a new chassis.

Useful legacy external connectivity

Four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and front audio make the front panel practical for the era in which the case launched. The 5.25-inch bays are also genuinely useful for optical media or removable storage in workflows that still depend on those formats. Buyers should inspect a used unit’s front-panel cables and connectors, because a 2013 case may have experienced years of plugging, unplugging, and transport.

Cons and limitations

Its size and weight affect every stage of ownership

A 41-pound empty chassis is already a two-person handling problem for many people; installed hardware increases that burden substantially. The listed 25.6 × 9.9 × 27.2-inch envelope can exceed the depth or height available under a desk and may not fit through a narrow route to the intended room. Plan where the case will sit, how its side panels will open, and how you will remove it for maintenance before buying.

Cable routing can become awkward

In StorageReview’s documented build, the case did not include power-supply cable extensions for some routes to the 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch bays. As a result, cables crossed the interior in that configuration. This is a documented build observation, not a guaranteed problem with every modular PSU or every drive arrangement, but it is an important planning warning. A PSU with suitably long leads, compatible extensions, and a deliberate cage layout can reduce the issue; adding drives after the system is assembled can make it worse.

No dedicated PCIe-slot cooling fan

StorageReview noted the absence of a PCIe-slot cooling-fan bracket and identified potential hot spots around installed PCIe cards, particularly storage cards and accelerators. The 900D has many fan mounts, so builders can often direct airflow with ordinary fans, but there is no purpose-built fan position attached to the expansion-slot area. Dense card stacks and high sustained workloads deserve a specific airflow plan rather than an assumption that the front and rear fans will be enough.

The maximum drive count depends on optional cages

The headline figure of 15 internal 3.5-inch drives requires two separately purchased cages. The included baseline is nine bays. On a used-market purchase, verify that the cages, trays, screws, and mounting hardware are actually present; a seller’s photograph of the empty chassis does not establish that the expansion parts are included. The exact cage part identity and current availability were not established by the 2013 reviews, so confirm compatibility before paying a premium for a supposedly complete set.

Modern expectations are not part of the original design

The front panel reflects a 2013 case: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 rather than newer front-panel standards. There is no evidence in the cited reviews of current front-I/O upgrades, integrated fan hubs, addressable lighting controls, or contemporary cable-management accessories. Those omissions do not make the case unusable, but they may require adapters or separate controllers in a modern build.

How many drives and radiators can fit?

Drive planning

  1. Start with the included capacity. Count on nine internal 3.5-inch bays, including three hot-swap positions, plus four external 5.25-inch bays.
  2. Confirm the expansion parts. Reaching 15 internal 3.5-inch drives requires two optional cages. Ask for photographs of both cages, their trays, and the mounting screws.
  3. Reserve cable space. Route SATA data and power before filling every cage. The documented build showed that some power runs may cross the interior without extensions.
  4. Check simultaneous clearances. A radiator, thick fan, long graphics card, pump, and drive cage can compete for the same volume even when each component is individually listed as compatible.

Radiator planning

Use the five published positions as a starting map: front up to 360 mm; top up to 480 mm with 120 mm fans or 420 mm with 140 mm fans; one bottom side up to 480 mm or 420 mm; the other bottom side up to 280 mm or 240 mm with a PSU installed; and rear 120 or 140 mm. Then compare the radiator’s actual thickness, fan thickness, fittings, and tubing path with the drive cages and power supplies you intend to install.

Who should buy a 900D?

Good matches

  • A storage-focused builder who will populate many 3.5-inch bays.
  • A custom-liquid-cooling project that genuinely needs several large radiator positions.
  • A workstation requiring HPTX or E-ATX support, many expansion cards, or two power supplies.
  • A long-lived platform where spare internal volume and future drive expansion are more important than desk space.

Poor matches

  • A straightforward gaming PC using one motherboard, one graphics card, and a few SSDs.
  • A compact office or living-room setup where footprint, weight, and front-panel age matter.
  • A buyer who cannot verify optional cages, trays, front-I/O operation, or return terms.
  • Anyone expecting a current case’s connectivity, integrated controls, or easy one-person portability.

Used-market inspection checklist

The 900D’s reviews date from April 2013. StorageReview reported a release-era street price near $350 and a two-year warranty, but those figures describe launch conditions and do not establish present pricing or coverage. Before buying a used unit, inspect:

  • All nine included 3.5-inch bays, especially the three hot-swap mechanisms and their backplane connections.
  • Both optional cages if the seller claims a 15-drive configuration.
  • All four 5.25-inch bay covers, rails, and mounting hardware.
  • Front USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and audio ports, plus the internal cables that connect them.
  • Fan mounts, included fans, dust filters, side-panel hardware, and the side window.
  • Evidence of bent chassis rails, corrosion, stripped threads, missing screws, or shipping damage.
  • Whether the seller accepts returns if a hot-swap board, front I/O assembly, or cage is defective.

Compare listings on total delivered cost, included accessories, physical condition, and return terms rather than using the historical $350 figure as a current benchmark. No verified current market average, stock level, or warranty status is established by the cited material.

How to compare it with another large case

Do not compare super towers by external dimensions alone. Make a checklist that records:

  • Usable internal 3.5-inch bays, identifying which are hot-swap and which cages are included.
  • Radiator size, thickness, and placement when drives and power supplies are installed simultaneously.
  • Motherboard formats and the number of expansion slots.
  • One- versus two-PSU support and the length of required power cables.
  • PCIe-area airflow and whether a dedicated bracket or nearby fan mount exists.
  • Front-I/O standards and the condition of the actual ports on a used unit.
  • Footprint, empty weight, lifting access, and the space needed to remove side panels.
  • Asking price, missing parts, seller reputation, and return policy for the specific listing.

This method exposes the 900D’s real advantage: it offers more usable expansion paths than a typical full tower. It also makes clear when that capacity is simply unused volume that you will have to store, move, and clean.

Verdict: capacity first, convenience second

The Corsair Obsidian 900D remains compelling as a legacy super tower when a project requires many hard drives, several large radiators, unusually large motherboards, or two power supplies. Its nine included 3.5-inch bays, optional 15-drive ceiling, five radiator positions, 15 fan mounts, and ten expansion slots provide a combination that ordinary cases rarely match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its disadvantages are equally concrete: a 41-pound chassis with a very large footprint, cable-routing compromises in a documented build, no dedicated PCIe cooling fan, and expansion parts that may be difficult to verify on the used market. If your build does not need that capacity, a smaller and newer case will be easier to place, wire, cool, and maintain. If it does, evaluate the exact listing and component clearances rather than relying on the model’s reputation or its original launch price.
