Use await driver.takeScreenshot() to capture the current browsing context with Selenium’s JavaScript bindings. It returns a Base64-encoded PNG string, so write it with Node.js’s base64 encoding to create a valid PNG file.
Capture and save the current page
Install Selenium’s JavaScript package with npm install selenium-webdriver. The current Selenium JavaScript API overview lists Node.js 22 or newer as a requirement; confirm compatibility for the package version and runtime used by your project in the official API overview.
Here is a complete CommonJS example that starts Chrome, opens a page, saves a screenshot, and quits the driver even if capture fails:

})()The essential syntax is await driver.takeScreenshot(). Its result is encoded PNG data, not a file path or a Buffer. Passing 'base64' as the third argument to fs.writeFileSync decodes that string into PNG bytes as the file is written. The official Selenium JavaScript example uses the same approach. Capture one element instead
Find the element and call takeScreenshot(true) on the returned WebElement. This captures the visible region inside the element’s bounding rectangle, rather than asking the driver for a page-level screenshot.

What the screenshot covers
Selenium documents the driver screenshot as a best-effort operation. Its preference order is an entire-page screenshot, the current window, the visible portion of the current frame, and then the entire display containing the browser. That order is not a guarantee: output can vary with the browser and driver combination. Avoid assuming that a driver-level screenshot always includes the full page.
An element screenshot has a narrower documented scope: the visible region within that element’s bounding rectangle. For both methods, the returned value is Base64 PNG data that you can save using the same Node.js encoding argument.

Troubleshooting
- The file is not a valid PNG: The screenshot value is Base64 text. Write it with
fs.writeFileSync(path, screenshot, 'base64'); do not save the encoded text as ordinary UTF-8. takeScreenshotis undefined: Check that you are calling the correctly capitalized method on a Selenium WebDriver instance. Element capture uses the WebElement method, not the driver’s method.- The result is not full-page: Selenium promises a best-effort preference order, not identical full-page behavior in every browser-driver combination. The visible element screenshot is limited to the element’s bounding rectangle.
- The browser does not start: Confirm that the installed
selenium-webdriverversion supports your Node.js runtime and that your browser setup is available. The current API overview lists Node.js 22 or newer; requirements can differ by package version. - The script hangs or leaves a browser running: Keep driver use in a
tryblock and callawait driver.quit()infinallyso cleanup runs after capture errors as well.

Does Selenium save the screenshot directly to a path?
No. The JavaScript WebDriver method returns Base64-encoded PNG data; use Node.js file writing with the base64 encoding to create the image file.
Can I use the same write method for an element screenshot?
Yes. element.takeScreenshot(true) also returns Base64 PNG data, so the same Base64 file-writing approach applies.
