CoreWeave is trying to bring insurers into the financing of its rapidly expanding AI infrastructure. The company’s finance chief, co-founder Brannin McBee, says insurers control enormous pools of long-duration capital that could provide cheaper, longer-maturity funding than some bank and private-credit loans—provided CoreWeave can secure investment-grade ratings.
“Unlimited” describes the scale of those insurance investment pools, not a commitment to fund CoreWeave. The strategy matters because the company is adding expensive GPU capacity faster than its current cash generation can support and is already carrying tens of billions of dollars in debt and lease obligations.

What CoreWeave means by “unlimited” insurance capital
Insurers collect premiums and invest the proceeds to match liabilities that can stretch over decades. Their fixed-income allocations are therefore much larger and typically longer term than the lending capacity of an individual bank or private-credit fund. McBee described that potential pool this way: “It’s unlimited. Like, that’s all the money in the world that sits in the insurance tranche.”
The phrase is rhetorical, not a guarantee. Insurers still require acceptable credit ratings, collateral, covenants, pricing and regulatory treatment. CoreWeave is pursuing investment-grade ratings for more chip-backed debt and eventually for the company itself because many insurers face restrictions on buying below-investment-grade securities.

Why CoreWeave needs a new source of funding
Building AI cloud capacity requires purchasing large numbers of GPUs, installing them in data centers and securing power and networking before customers fully pay for the resulting capacity. CoreWeave has financed that expansion through several channels rather than relying on operating cash alone.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Capital raised during 2026 | More than $35 billion | Chip-backed loans, high-yield bonds, convertible bonds and share sales have all been used, according to a Financial Times report relayed by Reuters/TradingView. |
| Debt and lease obligations at the end of June 2026 | About $52 billion | The refinancing cost and maturity profile have become central to the company’s economics. |
| FY2025 revenue | $5 billion, up 168% year over year | CoreWeave’s 2026 shareholder letter reported very rapid growth, but growth has required heavy investment. |
| 2025 revenue estimate | $5.13 billion | S&P Global Ratings’ figure for the year. |
| 2025 free-cash-flow deficit | About $7.2 billion | S&P said continued access to external financing remained a key variable. |
| Backlog at September 30, 2025 | $55.6 billion | CoreWeave’s Q3 2025 SEC earnings release reported contracted future demand, but backlog is not the same as cash already collected. |
| Senior unsecured notes | $1.75 billion at 9% | The Q3 2025 release identified this outstanding bond issue and its coupon. |
How GPU-backed financing works
In a chip-backed facility, lenders advance money against specified GPUs and, in some structures, the cash flows from customer contracts. If the borrower defaults, lenders may have rights to the equipment, contract proceeds or both. The structure can reduce a lender’s loss exposure compared with an unsecured corporate loan, but it does not eliminate risks tied to hardware prices, technology changes or customer solvency.

- CoreWeave acquires and deploys GPUs. The chips become identifiable assets that can be pledged to lenders or placed in an asset-backed securitization.
- A financing vehicle or lender advances capital. Debt terms set borrowing limits, interest, maintenance tests and remedies if asset values or cash flows deteriorate.
- Customer contracts support repayment. Long-term commitments can make projected cash flows more predictable, especially when the customer has strong credit.
- Ratings determine the investor base. An investment-grade tranche can be eligible for insurers that cannot hold high-yield exposure, potentially lowering the interest rate and extending maturity.
The proven structure and the harder next step
An $8.5 billion facility backed by Nvidia chips and a long-term contract with Meta was reported as investment grade. That combination gives lenders two forms of support: equipment with a potential resale market and a contract from a large, highly rated technology customer.
CoreWeave wants to apply a similar approach to contracts with lower-rated AI laboratories. That is a more difficult underwriting exercise. A lower-rated customer may have a greater chance of delaying, renegotiating or terminating a commitment, and its financial strength may be less dependable if AI demand or funding conditions change. The contract’s legal protections, termination payments and assignment rights will matter as much as its headline value.

CoreWeave’s financing playbook so far
In July 2025, CoreWeave announced a $2.6 billion delayed-draw term loan and said the transaction supported a lower cost of capital. A delayed-draw structure lets the borrower take funds as projects require them rather than paying interest on the entire amount immediately.
CoreWeave’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes asset-backed securitizations and rated parent-level debt as parts of its strategy. The filing also says the company expects greater scale and new financing forms to reduce capital costs. In practice, that means CoreWeave is trying to turn its growing equipment base and contracted revenue into securities that appeal to different investor groups, from high-yield buyers to insurers.

Why cheaper, longer debt would change the economics
High-yield bonds and private-credit loans can be arranged quickly, but they generally carry higher interest rates and may mature sooner than insurance-oriented investment-grade debt. Longer maturities would reduce the amount of debt CoreWeave must refinance while it is still building capacity. A lower coupon would leave more of each customer dollar available for power, data-center operations, employee costs and future expansion.
The benefit is conditional. Investment-grade status requires ratings agencies to believe that contracted cash flows, asset values, liquidity and leverage provide adequate protection through a downturn. A rating on one specially structured facility does not automatically make the parent company investment grade or guarantee that every future loan will receive the same treatment.

The main risks investors will assess
| Risk | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Leverage and cash-flow dependence | Rapid capacity growth has required repeated borrowing and equity issuance while free cash flow has been negative. If external funding becomes unavailable or expensive, planned expansion could slow. |
| Refinancing | A large debt and lease base creates a schedule of maturities and renewals. Higher rates or weaker credit markets could raise costs when obligations come due. |
| Customer credit quality | Contracts with established, financially strong customers provide better support than commitments from lower-rated AI labs. A customer default can reduce the cash available to service asset-backed debt. |
| Contract duration and enforceability | Long-term backlog helps only if agreements are binding, assignable to lenders and protected against early termination or renegotiation. |
| GPU collateral values | Chips can lose resale value as newer generations arrive, supply changes or demand for a particular model falls. A lender relying on liquidation value could recover less than expected. |
| Technology and utilization cycles | Data centers built for one generation of accelerators may need costly upgrades. Low utilization would weaken the operating cash flow expected to repay debt. |
What to watch next
- Whether CoreWeave obtains investment-grade ratings for additional chip-backed facilities rather than only for a specific transaction.
- How ratings agencies treat loans supported by lower-rated AI-lab contracts.
- The interest rates, maturities, covenants and collateral haircuts on new insurer-targeted debt.
- Changes in debt, leases, capital spending and free cash flow as new capacity comes online.
- Evidence that backlog converts into revenue and cash without rising customer cancellations or concessions.
CoreWeave’s insurer strategy is therefore a funding ambition, not an unlimited line of credit. If ratings, contracts and GPU values hold up, insurers could provide a deeper and cheaper source of capital for the next phase of expansion. If any of those supports weaken, the same financing model could leave the company exposed to high leverage and expensive refinancing.
