Core Keeper Portal Guide (2026): Fast Travel for You and Your Co-op Group

Core Keeper has two fast-travel systems: free, pre-placed Ancient Waypoints and craftable Portals made at an Octarine Workbench. Activate a Waypoint to add it to your party’s network. A Portal must charge after placement; 10 minutes is the most consistently reported current value, although an older guide lists 20 minutes. To travel, stand beside a ready Portal, press E, and choose an activated destination.

The important co-op distinction is that the network is shared, while world progress is not: characters keep their own skills and gear, but boss kills and structures are saved in the host’s world file.

How fast travel works in Core Keeper

Fast travel is built around a single destination network. Ancient Waypoints already exist in the world, while Portals are late-game devices that players craft and place. Once a node is activated or installed, it can provide a route to other usable nodes.

There are two practical differences:

  • Ancient Waypoints: pre-placed locations that are free to activate. They are commonly found near important areas, including some boss arenas.
  • Portals: player-crafted devices that require materials, an Octarine Workbench, and a charging period after placement.

In a co-op world, an activated Waypoint is available to the party rather than only to the player who touched it. Portals and Waypoints operate as one shared network, so a party member can select any activated node that the current world makes available.

Ancient Waypoints: the free fast-travel option

Finding and activating a Waypoint

Ancient Waypoints are placed in the world before you arrive. Explore the map and interact with one when you find it. Activation costs no crafting materials. A Waypoint is especially useful when it is near a boss arena or another location that would otherwise require a long return trip.

After activation, the Waypoint becomes part of the shared travel network. In a party, one player can activate it and the other players can use it as well. This makes it worth activating every Waypoint your group encounters, even if only one person is currently exploring.

What is confirmed and what is only a community report

Community reports claim that the Waypoint in front of The Core cannot be destroyed and that Waypoints can be dug up and reinstalled elsewhere with sufficiently strong mining power. Those details were not confirmed against an official source, so treat them as possibilities rather than guaranteed mechanics. Do not plan a base layout around being able to relocate a Waypoint until your version demonstrates that behavior.

Portals: the craftable network nodes

When Portals become available

Portals are a late-game item crafted at the Octarine Workbench. Unlike a Waypoint, a Portal is intended to be placed where your group needs a route: a home base, a biome entrance, or a staging point near a boss arena. Multiple placed Portals can give you quick access to distant parts of the map.

The Portal is not an instant-use item immediately after placement. It has to charge first. The most consistent current figure in community references is 10 minutes. One guide still lists 20 minutes, and the Fandom wiki’s history says patch 1.0.0.1 reduced the timer from 20 to 10 minutes. Because the current 1.3-era value was not confirmed by an official patch note in the available material, allow for the longer wait when planning a first installation.

How to craft a Portal

Open the crafting interface at an Octarine Workbench and look for the Portal recipe. Two incompatible material lists are published by community references:

Material List reported by Core Keeper Fandom wiki and CoreKeeperDB Cheaper list reported by atma.gg and one guide
Copper Bar 100 50
Iron Bar 100 50
Octarine Bar 100 50
Coral Wood Plank 200 50
Mechanical Part 20 15
Ancient Gemstone 30 20

The cheaper, 50-based list may reflect a later balance change. A Steam announcement for version 1.3 reportedly said Portal crafting costs were reduced but did not provide the numbers in the text reviewed. Therefore, neither list should be treated as universally correct for every build. The recipe displayed by your current Octarine Workbench is the authoritative value for your world.

Preparing materials without wasting them

  1. Reach and use an Octarine Workbench so the Portal recipe is visible in your build.
  2. Write down the quantities your interface requests. Do not rely on a screenshot or an older guide.
  3. Gather the bars, Coral Wood Planks, Mechanical Parts, and Ancient Gemstones before starting the craft.
  4. Reserve enough materials for the number of Portals you actually intend to place. The two published lists differ substantially, especially for Coral Wood Planks and bars.
  5. Craft the Portal, then carry it to the location where you want a permanent route.

How to place, charge and use a Portal

Placement and the charging wait

Place the crafted Portal at your chosen location. Placement starts its charge period; it is not ready for travel immediately. Use the 10-minute figure as the normal expectation, but allow up to 20 minutes if your build follows the older timer or if the in-game state does not match newer guides.

The available mechanics descriptions indicate that only the Portal you are travelling from must be charged. A secondary guide warns that a destination Portal that is not ready can leave a player stranded at that destination. Because that behavior is not documented in an official source here, the safe procedure is to wait until both ends of a new route appear ready before sending a player through.

Travel steps

  1. Stand next to the Portal you want to use as your departure point.
  2. Press E to open the Portal interface. The key is from a version 1.0 usage guide; if your controls are remapped, use the interact key shown by your game.
  3. Select the activated Waypoint or charged Portal that you want as the destination.
  4. Confirm the destination and wait for the transition to complete.

If a destination is missing from the list, it has not been activated, is not charged, is unavailable in the current world state, or your game is using a different interface version. Check the node itself before rebuilding anything.

Core Keeper portal co-op: what the group shares

Shared travel network

Waypoints activated by one player become usable by the party. Portals and Waypoints form a common network, so every party member can choose an activated node as a destination. A practical co-op routine is to have the explorer call out a newly found Waypoint, activate it, and then let the rest of the group use it for supply runs or boss preparation.

What each character keeps

Character skills and gear travel with each player. A returning player therefore keeps their personal progression and equipment when joining the host’s world.

What belongs to the host’s world

World progress is saved only to the host’s world file. Boss kills and built structures are examples of progress tied to that save. If a group changes hosts, the new host’s world may not contain the same defeated bosses, buildings, or activated locations. Decide which world is the campaign’s primary save before investing heavily in a shared Portal layout.

Planning a reliable Portal network

Start with a home hub

Place the first Portal at a central base or another location the whole group visits frequently. A central hub reduces the number of long walks even when only one remote route is ready. Keep the area around the device accessible so every player can stand beside it and interact.

Add remote nodes for high-cost trips

The best remote locations are places where returning repeatedly is expensive in time: a distant biome, a boss arena, or a resource area far from your base. Ancient Waypoints near bosses can serve the same purpose without consuming Portal materials, so activate those first and spend crafted Portals on gaps in the existing network.

Charge before a group expedition

Do not place a Portal at the start of a boss run and assume it will be usable immediately. Install it at least 10 minutes before departure, and use a 20-minute buffer if your version’s timer is uncertain. Check both the departure and destination nodes before sending the least experienced player through.

Keep a fallback route

A Portal is a convenience, not a replacement for ordinary navigation. If a destination is still charging or does not appear in the menu, keep a known Waypoint or a conventional route available. This is particularly important when only one player has reached a new area.

Charge-time conflict: 10 minutes or 20?

Published guides disagree. TechRaptor, the Core Keeper Fandom wiki and gamever report 10 minutes, while ScalaCube reports 20 minutes. The Fandom wiki’s patch history attributes the change from 20 to 10 minutes to version 1.0.0.1. The available version 1.3 announcement mentions reduced Portal crafting costs, not a new charge timer.

Use this decision rule:

  • If your game’s Portal countdown reaches readiness at roughly 10 minutes, use 10 minutes for future planning.
  • If it is still charging at 10 minutes, wait until it reaches 20 minutes before assuming the device is broken.
  • If the timer remains inconsistent after 20 minutes, verify that you placed the item successfully and that you are checking the same Portal rather than a destination node.

This is a version-dependent game value, not a published statistic. There is no survey or laboratory measurement establishing a universal Portal charge time across all editions.

Portal recipe conflict: how to handle different guides

The two published recipes are not small rounding differences; they represent materially different costs. The 100/100/100/200/20/30 list requires twice as many bars as the 50-based list and four times as many Coral Wood Planks. A player following the wrong list could postpone a Portal unnecessarily or arrive at the workbench with too few materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the in-game recipe first. If you are coordinating a co-op stockpile, have the host read the quantities from the host’s current world and version, then announce one agreed list to the group. Do not mix quantities from separate guides. When documenting your own world for friends, record the game version beside the recipe because later balance changes may alter the costs again.

Troubleshooting: when fast travel does not work

The Portal does not appear ready

  • Confirm that the Portal was placed rather than merely selected in your inventory.
  • Wait the full charge period. Ten minutes is the common current report; 20 minutes covers the older value.
  • Interact with the departure Portal again to refresh its status.
  • Check whether you are standing at a different Portal than the one you intended to charge.

The destination is missing

  • Travel to the location and activate the Ancient Waypoint if it has never been activated.
  • For a crafted Portal, verify that the destination device has finished charging.
  • Make sure you are in the same host world in which the node was created or activated.
  • Have another party member check the list; a co-op network should expose activated nodes to the party, but host-world progress remains tied to the host’s save.

A player arrives but cannot immediately return

The reported mechanic says the departure Portal is the one that must be charged, while a destination that is not ready can strand the traveller. Treat every new two-way connection as incomplete until both ends are ready. If someone has already travelled, use the ordinary route or a nearby activated Waypoint while the destination finishes charging.

The recipe does not match an online guide

Do not dismantle equipment or farm to an obsolete list. Compare the recipe displayed at your Octarine Workbench with the guide’s stated version. Version 1.3 reportedly reduced costs, and the exact current numbers were not included in the announcement summary available here.

A Waypoint cannot be moved or destroyed

Relocation and destruction behavior is not firmly established. Community reports about digging up Waypoints require strong mining power, but they are not confirmed official mechanics. If a Waypoint is important, leave it in place and build your route around it rather than assuming it can be recovered.

Recommended co-op workflow

  1. Choose the host whose world will contain the group’s permanent buildings and boss progress.
  2. Activate every Ancient Waypoint encountered, especially those near boss arenas.
  3. Record each activated node’s location so players can identify it when selecting a destination.
  4. Build the first Portal at the shared base after confirming the recipe shown by the host’s Octarine Workbench.
  5. Place remote Portals at high-value destinations and wait for them to charge before scheduling an expedition.
  6. Confirm that both ends are ready, then have each player test the route before carrying rare supplies through it.
  7. Keep ordinary travel options available for any destination that is still charging or absent from the menu.

Quick reference

Question Answer
How many fast-travel systems are there? Two: Ancient Waypoints and crafted Portals.
Do Waypoints cost materials? No. They are pre-placed and free to activate.
Where are Portals crafted? At an Octarine Workbench.
How long does a Portal charge? Ten minutes is the most consistent current report; one older guide lists 20 minutes, and the change to 10 is attributed to patch 1.0.0.1.
How do you travel? Stand beside the Portal, press E, and select a destination.
Are destinations shared in co-op? Activated Waypoints and Portal nodes form a network usable by the party.
What is saved to the host? World progress such as boss kills and structures; each character retains personal skills and gear.
