1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a small yard with a convenient outdoor outlet and an easy route for an extension cord, a corded electric string trimmer is a practical starting point. Choose a cordless battery model when an outlet or cord would limit where you can work, or when you already own a compatible battery platform. For long sessions or thick weeds, compare the exact models: “corded” and “cordless” alone do not tell you how well a trimmer cuts or how long it will run.
Start with your yard and where the outlet is
| Your situation | Better starting point | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Small, straightforward yard and a nearby outdoor outlet | Corded | No battery-runtime limit or charging pause, but the outlet and extension-cord route set your working range. Consumer Reports describes corded models as a fit for smaller yards, with about a quarter-acre offered as a rough guide—not a hard limit. Consumer Reports buying guidance. |
| No convenient outdoor outlet, or many obstacles and separated areas | Cordless | You can move without routing a cord from the outlet; the battery’s charge and runtime become constraints. Consumer Reports buying guide and Consumer Reports power-source guidance. |
| You already own batteries for compatible outdoor tools | Cordless may be better value | Some tool platforms share batteries, but compatibility depends on the exact trimmer and battery. Check both before buying. Consumer Reports buying guide. |
| Long sessions, thick weeds, or frequent edging | Compare specific models | Workload affects battery use and cutting results. Look for model-specific runtime and performance information rather than assuming a power source wins. Consumer Reports’ 2026 testing coverage and EGO’s 2026 catalog. |
String trimmer, weed eater, and weed whacker are common names for this tool category. Whatever you call it, consider the yard’s shape as well as its area: a compact yard with many beds or corners can make cord routing awkward, while a larger open space still needs a suitable outlet and extension-cord reach if you choose corded.

What changes when you choose corded?
Reach depends on the outlet and cord
A corded trimmer draws power from an outlet, so it avoids battery-runtime limits. Its practical range, however, is physical: you need an outdoor extension cord long enough to reach the work, and the cord must be managed throughout the job. Consumer Reports says corded trimmers are best suited to smaller yards and notes that the tool cord is short, so an extension cord is usually needed. Check the chosen trimmer’s manual for permitted cord type, gauge, and length rather than treating one cord specification as universal. Consumer Reports buying guide.

What changes when you choose cordless?
Freedom to move, in exchange for finite runtime
A battery trimmer removes the extension cord from the work area, which helps when the outlet is far away or the yard has obstacles. In exchange, available work time depends on the model and battery, and you may need to stop to recharge or swap batteries.

Consumer Reports gives category-level guidance of roughly 20 to 40 minutes or longer when a second charged battery is available; its current buying guide also describes about 30 minutes on a charge as a general expectation. Neither figure guarantees runtime for a particular trimmer. EGO’s 2026 catalog lists example model claims of “up to” 30 to 60 minutes and says actual runtime varies with battery, charge, grass condition, and operating technique. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test measurements. Consumer Reports buying guide; EGO Power+ 2026 catalog.
Check what comes in the package and what you already own
Compare whether the specific trimmer includes a battery and charger, and whether batteries you own are explicitly compatible. A shared battery platform can improve the value of a cordless tool, but brand or voltage alone is not enough to establish compatibility. If long jobs are routine, check whether a compatible spare battery is available and factor its cost into your decision.

Does one power source cut better?
There is no universal performance winner based solely on the power-source label. Consumer Reports’ 2026 coverage says battery models are more plentiful and generally perform better than corded models in its tests, while some corded models still score above average. Those are findings in Consumer Reports’ test context, not a guarantee about every model. David Trezza, who oversees its string-trimmer testing, said, “Battery trimmers really rival gas in cutting performance”—a comparison with gas, not a direct verdict that cordless beats corded. Consumer Reports’ 2026 electric-trimmer coverage.
When comparing candidates, look for evidence on the work you actually do: trimming, edging, clearing time, handling, and line feeding. Consumer Reports describes evaluating those factors, but results for one model should not be treated as category-wide proof. Thick vegetation and frequent edging can also change how much work a battery charge delivers, so seek model-specific details for those conditions. A practical checklist before buying
- Map the work area: note the yard’s size, layout, obstacles, and how far the trimming areas are from an outdoor outlet.
- Check cord tolerance: decide whether routing and managing an extension cord will be workable for the whole job.
- Estimate work time: if you choose cordless, compare model-specific runtime claims and consider whether a spare compatible battery suits your workload.
- Compare the complete setup: account for an outdoor-rated extension cord for a corded tool, or battery and charger requirements for a cordless one.
- Verify platform compatibility: confirm the exact battery and trimmer models match before counting an existing battery as a savings.
- Compare the trimmer itself: weigh cutting and edging performance, handling, weight, and line feeding—not just power source.
- Read the manual: check cord specifications and safety precautions for the exact tool you plan to use.
